FBI Warns of Online Car-Sales Scam
Scam artists pose as military personnel about to be deployed

Scam artists are now posing as members of the United States military in a new ruse to dupe consumers buying vehicles on the Internet, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warns.
These scammers claim they’ve either been sent overseas to improve military relations or need to sell their vehicles “quickly and cheaply” because of upcoming deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan, FBI officials say.
This is a new twist to an old scam that continues to rip-off unsuspecting consumers buying cars and other vehicles on the Internet, the FBI says.
“Victims find attractively priced vehicles advertised at different Internet classified ad sites,” the agency warns. “Most of the scams include some type of third-party vehicle protection program to ensure a safe transaction.”
After consumers receive what the FBI calls “convincing e-mails from the phony vehicle protection program,” they are told to send either the full payment -- or a percentage of the payment -- to the third-party agent using a wire payment service.
“No vehicles are delivered to the victims,” the FBI said.
Consumers can protect themselves from getting taken in one of these schemes by doing their homework before buying any vehicles on the Internet, the FBI said. Consumers should also know and follow the rules used by the Internet sites they visit. If someone asks you to break those rules, the FBI warns, that person is likely trying to rip you off.

I almost bought this car! and then i googled the vin and thank God i found this. Isn't there something someone can do about this!

i got the same message, replied to it with just my basic info, like address and e-mail and name. And then i found this searching the vin via google. I am glad i haven't given any credit card info. I am curious if anyone knows what i should do now that he has that info?

I was trying to purchase a Jeep from Craigslist. The guy wanted to ship it to me. He said he was shipped to Canada and couldn't register his car there, so he was selling it. His name was Sgt. Jack Gars. I buy lots of stuff from the web, so I know scams when I see them.

same thing right now with a 2005 Prius advertised in WA state in autotrader.com. I pulled VIN which he has, and it was the right car. But he says he's going through ebay buyer protection without posting the car on Ebay. Ebay does not allow that! He says someone from Ebay will call me to get the bank info for the refundable $2,000 deposit! yeah, right.

This guy sent me almost the EXACT same message except a different car and price. The website with the cars pictures is also the same. I am so glad I came across this and didnt fall for this stupid scam

He is posting in CA craigslist under the name of Sgt Haddix selling a Toyota Sienna XLE Limited.  Same fact pattern.  Wanted $4990 and said he would cover shipping from the UK to US.  Yeah right!  Good luck in getting this guy.

I Googled his name and found an article on the A AFB website on someone with that name so I almost started to think this could be ligit. However in my car search I remember only looking at cars in my area which is Bakersfield, CA so I was confused as to why he would want to ship it if it was in my area... No reply yet but I'm glad I found this site and when ppl Google the new name they'll see this and avoid another victim

Same thing but in Florida.. it was a Sgt Patrick Brewster stationed in the UK and the vehicle was a 2005 Honda Odyssey. Also, there is another one for a 2007 Honda Odyssey. This person is in fear of losing his job and is on a business trip to Canada. I wanted to be sure to warn you!
