My minor son saw an ad for a 2005 Audi A6 3.2 Quattro on Craigslist.  So, he started communitcation with the alleged seller, Staff Sergeant, Bobbie Workman, who stated he was selling the vehicle because his sister was sick and they needed the money.  A car worth over $11,000 for $4,900?  When my son came to me, I as an attorney, started doing research as I was very, very skeptical!  First, I checked on the military website and did find a Bobbie Workman, but he was not stationed in UK.  Next, I contacted my friend, a retired General and he could not find a Staff Sergeant, Bobbie Workman, the alleged seller, stationed in the UK either. Then we ran a Car Fax and yes the same car was listed but anybody can provide/get that information! Next, I got online and found the real E-bay's fax number and it did not match the fax number that Bobbie Workman had provided which was (858) 408-3555.  Next, I sent a fax to the correct E-bay and asked them if they could confirm the "Transaction Invoice" that was e-mailed to me.  They never heard of it! Next, I ran a search on the real E-bay site and could not find a "Andrew Murrey" the alleged E-bay Motors Agent in Staffordshire, UK where I was supposed to send the Money Gram! In fact there was NO E-BAY AGENT in Staffordshire..The contract said to get a Money Gram and send it to the E-bay Agent...on a normal E-bay Pay/Pal account you deposit the money, via credit card and Pay/Pal takes care of the transaction!  We have NEVER had to mail a money order to an address! So, I was definitely suspicious at that point.  So, after running all the names, e-bay accounts, etc. I finally ran the fax number that he provided and BINGO!! I found your site...So, with that said, YES, IT IS A COMPLETE FRAUD. .I have forwarded the fraudulently documents, contracts, invoices, etc. to the Texas Attorney General to open a file and locate these individuals for prosecution! The e-mail address he used is workman.bobbie@gmail.com.  I suspect he is the same person who used the other fictitious names! It is true..."Buyers beware!" and I might add..do your homework on internet sales!

The name being used now selling a 2005 Odyssey is SSgt. Tony Phillips in Lakenheath RAF base using gmail account tonyphillips.ssgt@gmail.com.

I realized exactly what was going on when I saw it was a message from ebay motors but originated from vppsafe.com.  Then I saw that they wanted the money sent moneygram and I knew it was a scam.  I hope no one else falls for this.

I knew it was a scam and googled the name and found a person in Denver he had tried to scam using the same story.
he says he is in the UK and all the same Ebay stuff---
this is crazy how can this guy get away with this!!!

I answered the ad for the 2006 Honda Pilot EX and Sgt. James Helms contacted me saying he was a sergeant in the military, and he was selling his car for $4990 and it would be shipped back over here. Thankfully we didn't get scammed out of money, well we got scammed out of 40 bucks for the carfax. He got our name and address, and set up a transaction with Ebay(even though I know it's not from Ebay.) But we didn't have the funds for the car yet anyway, but my sister thought it was a little fishy so she went and replied to a similar ad on craigslist and a guy emailed her back with almost the same story, except now his name was SGT. Peter J Loranty and he was in Spain. So I knew it was a scam and I reported it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Eventhough I didn't lose any money I know a lot of people have lost money with the scam, and I want to do as much as possible to help stop these people from scamming others.

This same guy has been emailing me for the last day or two with the exact same information. He needs to be caught. I hope no one will fall for this scam please research your information first before buy any thing.
I call ebay customer service desk they had no information on this vehicle.

Hello. Just found out today My husband and I got scammed. Have you any positive responses? Tried local news, TX Attorney General (said to call FBI) Called Houston FBI they said sorry, don't have man power to do anything.  Looked on Craigslist today and they had posted to every city the same truck that I supposedly just purchased. my e-mail is darlenewadkins@yahoo.com  watch out they also had a Toyota Corolla for sale. In the city it says (USA). They use a mass mailing setup.

they are also using dave hunter a sargeant in the USAF .....send to Archie Tothall united kingdom....what is scary, is david hunter is in the airforce and is stationed in London, we verified all his info....what I don't understand is how it can be going on so long and no one is doing anything.  I thought DOD would get involved because of the use of these military guys names....every entity I spoke with said call the FBI...local FBI basically said go to this website and complain.  Sorry, very little man power.....I have tried to get the news in on it so they can at least spread the word, but have received no call backs.  I guess it is only newsworthy if those being scammed are rich....recent headlines about that big scam...but, I am no Steve spielberg or john mccain so I guess it doesn't matter...

we were scammed too.   It was a sgt dave hunter in uk....my husband did verify (he is military too)that dave hunter is a sgt and was stationed where he said he was.....I wonder if the next person scammed will be by a person using my husbands name...they know he's in the army, they know his us mailing address.....so the next person scammed could be by someone using my husbands name.  If the person checks the info, all will pan out....I have called every entity I can think of(including the white house)no one seems interested, I guess cuz we are peons.  I contacted all the local news stations trying to get the info out there, and none of them has seemed interested in our dilemma....this scam has been going on a long long time....I can't believe no one has stopped them, they are using the same phone number..archie tothall was supposed ebay agent

we fell for it I am sorry to say...using the name of sgt dave hunter usaf(this guy does exist, and IS stationed in UK) I wonder how come our government is not doing anything about these people impersonating active duty military members??!!  I thought that in itself was a crime....the supposed ebay agent was archie tothall in nottinghamshire england.  I have made so many phone callls to report this I have lost count...NO ONE seems to care...I guess if we were Spielburg or MCCain it would be newsworthy.  Too bad that no one cares about the"little People"  being scammed.  I wish we could get info out to general public to be aware, but none of the news people I called have called back......

Hey guys, I got a call from the local news here...Last night I was on fox news telling everyone what an idiot we were for falling for this scam. www.myfoxhouston.com. Story aired feb 20,2009.  I know I won't get my money back, but I will do whatever i can to prevent someone else from losing money.  My friend and I have been doing nothing but researching these jerks all week, and you won't believe how big this "criminal ring" is.  The reason they never ask for more than $5000.00 is because that's when it becomes a felony. I was looking online for a new vehicle because I'm deployed and I don't have a vehicle to come home too.  I found a 2005 Toyota Tacoma for $4,850.00 with 40,500 miles on it. I jumped at the chance to contact this "ssgt david hunter" so I could find out how to purchase this vehicle while I was here.  Luckily, being deployed hinders me from being able to person to person tranfer money thru moneygram so we got the scam before anything happened. I just hope my name is not used in the next scam. That scares me.  Well, I guess everyone wants to make it more difficult for a good person to buy a vehicle.

I experienced the exact same deal, except i didn't send any money!  What I did was simply Google his email address and i saw so many red flags!  Here's the thing, everyone that I contacted through Craigslist about buying a car tried to run the exact same scam!  Just don't buy a car through Craigslist, Ebay or any other site.  Make sure that you actually meet the person locally!

Try this - mention that you had a friend run his or her information, as well as the car's, through the FBI database!  Ask for their contact numbers.  When I asked "Sgt. James Helms" for his, he replied "I don't have a phone right now."  Once I mentioned "FBI", I heard nothing back!

I have also been scammed by the same people but different name. they got me for 2000.00usd  and I have made many complaints. craigslist should not be allowed to help them scam people so if you got any suggestions on how we can stop this or at least make it craiglist have to require some information  and verify it then please feel free to contact me becausecraiglist is fuelly the fire under these people and someone has to stop them.
