Got a call from this number today asking for someone I didn't know. When I said they got the wrong number they told me they knew this was the right number and the guy threatened to burn my house down if I didn't pay them $4000 by Monday. I hung up and called the police and they took a report. They tried to call the number back but just kept getting hung up on. Do not answer if someone calls from this number.

Never give out your Social Security number.  If someone wants to verify it, they usually just ask for the last 4 numbers.

Don't be bullied...you can take control!
Never respond to any aggressive threats or rudeness.  Don't give out any information, not your phone number, your spouse, in laws, out laws, home address, any address, work place, or bank info much less your SSN.  They have to PROVE that you owe the debt to them (and since they -the collection agency - are not the original debtor, they will have to provide you with a copy of the original debt showing your signature). That being said, they are trained to be bullies.  Get the name of the organization, the name of the caller, and then hang up.  DO NOT VERIFY ANYTHING.  DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY OF THEIR QUESTIONS!  Better yet don't answer the phone.  Caller ID can give you the number and you can look up who is calling with reverse directory.

If you owe the debt and can now pay off or down the debt you are better off to save the money up and pay it off lump sum.  You can negotiate a lower payoff this way.  This is what the debt repayment programs do. You pay them monthly into a special trust, when the trust balance gets built up enough, they contact the collection agency or original debtor and negotiate a lower pay-off.  Then if the amount settled upon is more than the amount built up, they arrange a large up-front payment with 2-8 additional payments over several months.  Once the agreed upon settlement is paid, the debt is noted as settled and then taken off your credit within 2-4 months.  If you choose to pay in full, it will be stated as such. Debt repayment programs can negotiate for you...or you can attempt to talk to them yourself.  Start with a low balance credit card or loan and practice your negotiation skills.

I am only providing this information based on what my Father of 84 years had to do to get relief from debt collectors.  He was being hounded ruthlessly but desired to repay his debt.  He choose a debt repayment program.
I on the other hand chose to handle the repayment myself.  I simply refuse to talk to collection agencies, and when I am ready, I contact the original debtor by mail with a letter of intent to pay the debt at a reduced amount or in full.  (I save the money up first...).  Once I secure their written agreement for the reduced amount, I send a certified check.

There are many web sites, books, and free agencies that will direct you toward your financial freedom.  Many different ways of repaying a debt.  It's up to you whether you want to deal with them directly and if they are willing to be reasonable with you.  If they "threaten" to take you to court and file a judgment against you, don't admit to anything and let them make the first step.  9 x's out of 10 they sell the contract to another collection agency.  Just know eventually they can take you to court if the balance is high enough and not past the statute of limitations.  Also, statute of limitations is renewed once you have made a payment of any kind.  So, for your protection, don't pay unless you plan to follow through.

Wrong,Texas statutory & case law supports the notion that it would take a new contract to enforce an old debt. A promise to pay, a parital payment or even a full payment does not reset the SOL in Texas.

if this a debt collection company, it would be false or misleading representations about  a  debt if their true purpose is debt collection.

I keep getting a call from this number at all different times, but mostly 8:00 in the morning. I won't answer after having looked it up and seeing that it was a harassing call. I put them on my Block list, but my phone still rings. I am on do Not Call registry too and it still comes thru! I wish they would stop! Morons.
