Received a call from this number and let it go to voicemail. My phone indicated a possible scam call. I called back from a different number and got through to a live person. They would not tell me the nature of their business.

Caller id showed this number as Gatestone on Dec 22, 2017. 866-206-7637 appears to be a sister number, which caller id showed as "800 service." When I called back the sister number they answered as Gatestone. They asked what my name was. They were looking for someone other than me and asked if anyone else was living here. I said no and they said they would remove my number from their list.

never had an amx card!  ever!  not even for work!  866-251-2396 = caller id = none = gateway number for a variety of scams/spams = this time for Collect Corp, collection agency for AMX (American Express) = for someone I never heard of = maybe dyslectic company not writing down a proper number, but I'm betting on scam....what do you think?...ugh....

Number repeatedly calls me, but will not leave a message. After reading some other posts here, it seems that this is AMEX or American Express, but I have never had an account with American Express so I'm not sure why they're harassing me. Will be blocking their number.

Just in case it ever happens to you, this might be helpful. My teenage son has been receiving relentless calls from this company, and yet he has NEVER had a credit card, loan, or debt of any sort. This company, while it may have some legitimacy, does not act as such. It is a fishing expedition to obtain private information for identity fraud. This is especially important to understand, as our elderly are the biggest victims of such behavior.

OK, so now that you feel better because you have replied to a post made in 2013, 6 years ago, that will never be seen by the poster you replied to, how about we put some energy into correctly handling this?

The first step to any problem is to determine what the problem is.  For starters, is this American Express calling?  If so, they are an original creditor and are generally not required to follow Federal collection laws.  Is this a 3rd party debt collector as some have mentioned?  If so then they must do the following:

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

called asking for my brother in law, who lives in another state, said this was the phone number he gave them. Which I know he wouldn't do.  Gentlemen said it was a business matter and could not tell me the name of the company, and said he needed my BIL to call him this afternoon.
