- IDontAnswerMyPhoneThese people call me because an ex of mine gave them my phone number when he visited the emergency room of a local hospital and never paid the bill. I've contacted this company twice, spoke with two different people, gave them the correct information for the actual person they are trying to contact, but they keep harassing me. I live in Florida, it's illegal for this company to continue to contact me after I have proven I am not the person they are trying to reach so I will now be contacting an attorney.

- Lee| 1 replyThis person has called me.. my parents, some other family members.. and even my ex husband.. To try to find me, because of a bad debt and they are taking legal action and taking me to court and "here's the docket number".. well as far as I know (and I could be wrong), but they can't have a docket number, until I've been served.. and that's never happened.. They have my number, so I don't know why they are now harassing my family and ex family..
- Caller: I'm not sure
- Call type: Debt collector
- somegirl replies to Mr.303Yeah, I keep them on the phone if I'm not busy. They say they are Fred in Florida. I say... "no you are NOT!".They laugh a bit and say, yes i am... it goes on and on... arguing about whether his name is fred or not... Then I say okay, MAYBE your name is Fred but, ARE YOU IN Florida?! At that point they usually say something fateful like, no. Keep these people on the phone and, they will feel the pain. The longer they talk to you, the LESS money they make. Your number will be flagged as a "loser" number to call. (a number that NEVER buys). And you will begin to get skipped. It works, and, it's fun.
- CWG40 replies to LeeCommon debt collector technique; call the relatives of the target. Hoping they will "shame" the target into paying. If a law case has been filed against you, you'd have heard about it from the attorney for the other side. You would have received a formal letter with the attorney's name on it. You'd have a paper trail. Of course if a case had been filed, you'd have most likely already been served by a process server authorized to serve process in your state and locality. But this is just an attempt to try to scare some money out of you.
Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:

- BigA replies to PattiYou need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation, cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter. You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to. Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment. If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
