Got a call from them saying I owed a debt, then got a letter. The alleged debt is $12.56 which is actually not a debt I owe or ever have I owed. I have paid all of my bills on time to this particular provider. I know that for a fact. The letter looks fake and the man I spoke to on the phone did NOT sound legit. Nor did he sound professional. My opinion is that they somehow access your credit and then prey on people's fears. This looks to me like a scam to get you to make payments to them (now they have your credit card #) long after the hospital or medical facility has written off a debt.  I have an online account with the said medical provider and have been making payments to them and the account is in good standing, I literally checked before writing this post. Don't fall for it!

What is the address on that letter?  Also, the law states that the letter must contain the following information:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

You will need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation (by law they have to go back to the original creditor to prove you owe the debt (this will be the best money that you have ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/
    http://www.consumeradvocates.org/find-an-atto ... tates_value=All

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Computerized voicemail message stating, "Hi. We are calling from Microsoft Refund Department. If you remember you have a contract with us for computer support and services. Unfortunately we are closing the business. So you can give us call for the refund of amount you paid. To claim your refund call us on 866-276-8833. I repeat, at 866-276-8833. Thank you."

Scam. No such department, no contract. Don't call them back, don't give them any bank or credit card information.

Now they are sending text telling me the financial plan I requested is ready and to call in order to keep the plan I qualifies for. One, I requested no such thing. Two, there is only a phone number, no comapny name, no contact person. Obviously I have no plans to call them.

This is a debt collection company that usually deals with medical bills that a hospital may have turned over to them to collect. They have several numbers they may call from and are barely ethical. If you return their call DO NOT give them your social security # or driver license # and know your Federal Collection laws. It's been reported that sometimes the information they have is not accurate so if you have an unpaid medical bill you'd be better off dealing with the hospital or doctor you owe. Telling this company you are on the Federal Do Not Call Register and will file a complaint against them if they call again usually stops their calls.

Not in Texas. Texas does not allow Texas companies to garnish wages. The statute of limitations on debt in Texas is four years

First I have to wonder why you are replying to a post clearly made in 2013.  Do you think that person will be stopping back after 7 years? Next, I have to wonder how you know that person lives in Texas?
