I received a call on 1/12/2017 saying I owe thousands of dollars from a cc from 2002 they bought the debt and said they will settle my account for 1,317.50 which I have to pay by 1/23/2017 I told her I  don't have the money Miranda said if I pay the money that I wouldnt be contacted by the IRS that I would have to deal with them she also wanted bank info? They called again on 1/13/17 I didn't talk to them this time I reported them to the federal trade commission they are going to investigate them .

Read the above post by Big A so you know your rights and what debt collectors are required to do. The only time the IRS is involved is if you are issued a 1099-C (Forgiveness of Debt) and only the original creditor can issue one. If you do get one, it is included as income on your taxes for the year in which you receive it. Assuming you actually did have a credit card go into default in 2002, it is all but certain that the Statute of Limitations to sue you to collect has passed but that depends on the date of last payment on the debt and the law in your state of residence. If the SoL has passed, all they can do now is harass you. They cannot sue, nor threaten to sue nor make any indication you can be arrested, your license would be suspended, your tax refund held or anything of that nature.

They threatened me with the IRS saying that the cancelled debt was income and I didn't report it on taxes and now IRS would charge me interest and penalties for over 12 years and that I would be audited. ..Wages would be attached and bank accounts ceased.....The debt was never cancelled  therefore there is no back taxes or fees or any of the threats they made... They were also insulting and belittling. ...Big Scammers....

I keep getting calls on my cell phone for some person who used to live at my address over 10 years ago before I bought it. I never answered the calls but it's always a recorded message. Pretty recently they somehow got a hold of my mom's cell phone number and started harassing her too. She has never lived at this address. Both of our cell phone numbers are unlisted. I don't have a landline. The only connection I have to the person they are looking for is that I'm now living in the house where that person was renting before I bought it from the owner that was renting it out to them previously. But I've lived here going on 11 years!

How do I get these [***] off my back? And how do I make them stop harassing my mom? I read on other websites that people said I shouldn't call them back because they won't believe me that I'm not that person and they'll just harass me more. So I don't know what to do. I have no idea who this person is. I tried googling the person's name and nothing came up. I tried Facebook and couldn't find them on there either. For all we know, the person died or moved out of the state or something. What can I do? I'm sick of this!
