    Scam!!! Messages left at my husband's employer's main number, leaving a message that "if this isn't ___, to hang up immediately".  First, we have no unpaid debt, second this is illegal to call an employer's number and third, our acct wouldn't have that as a main notification number if we did owe something!

    Received a phone call this morning from them, very cryptic when I answered the phone.  I called the number back, and they said they are Chase Receivables, but they would not give me any information "by law" so they say, unless I verified my phone number and address.  I said you already have my phone number, and I will only give you my building number to confirm.  He said no, by law he needed more information.  I told him I wouldn't give him any more information until he told me what the company was and why they were calling.  He said no and hung up.  I don't have any outstanding debt, so I'm thinking this is a scam.

    This same situation has happened to my wife over the past few months. The same woman keeps calling, claiming there is an outstanding medical debt yet refuses to give my wife any specifics while demanding birth dates and Social Security numbers. Whoever keeps calling refuses to send any paperwork for us to check out - she'd much rather talk right over my wife and be a bully.
    They're bottom feeders preying on people who don't want to fight back. Bring it on!!!

    No debt validation, no debt. It's that simple.

    § 809.  Validation of debts   [15 USC 1692g]
    (a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing --

    (1) the amount of the debt;

    (2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;

    (3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;

    (4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and

    (5) a statement that, upon the consumer's written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor.

    (b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the consumer requests the name and address of the original creditor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt, or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment, or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy of such verification or judgment, or name and address of the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt collector.

    (c) The failure of a consumer to dispute the validity of a debt under this section may not be construed by any court as an admission of liability by the consumer.

    Chase Receivable - they are a medical bill collection agency.  Their website is chaserec.com
    Not a scam - they should tell you exactly where the medical bill they are referencing is from (though they need your DOB to do this - they didn't ask for any other personal info from me).  I called the hospital and they verified that Chase would be handling payments.  I recommend verifying whatever matter they are calling about in a similar way.

    Called regarding an outstanding debt I had from my son's birth a few months ago.  An oversight on my part (I got so many bills from the hospital, I lost track of one!) - they were very nice, set up payment for me.
