I just received a phone message from the same number (866-864-5841). The person claimed to be calling from Revenue Canada regarding an "important matter" but he did not leave his name and I could not find that exact number listed on Revenue Canada's website. The caller requested that I phone back and have my SIN number ready to give them and that I could speak to any of the agents who answered. Mmmm....I don't think so.

I too received the same message and ingored as I was not about to give out my SIN to just anyone.  My husband had to call Rev Canada on another matter, so I spoke with the same lady he did.  She said there was no record on my file stating they needed to speak with me.  I gave her the phone number that was left on my machine and she said that they don't even have that telephone number on file, she also said that whomever calls from Rev Canada always leaves their name.  She agreed that it was a smart move not to return the call.  Now I just tried to call the number, it says "Welcome to Canada Revenue Agency, for safety reasons your call may be monitored", then the phone started to ring .  As my husband mentioned, CRA always provides various options prior to you actually getting through to an agent.  I think I'm going to shoot an email to the police!

Just got a call from this # and he wanted to make sure he was talking to the person he asked for, and asked for address and DOB. When I told him I'd give my address but not my DOB  he told me to call 1 800 OCANADA. To which my reply was how do I know they are who they say they are.
Did a google search on the OCANADA # and it goes to the Goverment web site so now what?
BTW he never left his name.

We've got a same message at home saying "This message is from Canada Revenue Agency.  Please call back at 1-866-864-5841 as soon as possible since this call is very important.  When you call back, please ensure you have your social insurance number with you.  Our office is open Monday through Friday, and our agent will be happy to assist you."

I dialed this number curiously, and there was a greeting saying that "This is Canada Revenue Agency and this call may be monitored", but no French.  The lady who picked up the call asked me to provide my social insurance number.  I said I don’t normally provide my SIN number on the phone.  She said if you want to check out, please call 1-800-622-6232 which is the Ocanada #.  So… The same story…

According to your advice, I think I should stop here and hope Canada Revenue Agency doesn't have anything important to me.

    NS, Canada
I have received a call telling me to contact the NS Government for a very important matter, no name was left for me to contact, and no reference number.  I returned the phone call and was placed on hold with a message "please note your call will be monitared for quality assurance".  When a women answered she was very short and asked me for my client ID number or SIN.  I replied with "I do not give my SIN over the phone", she then snapped and said "Well then I can't help you", my reply was "you are the ones that called me"  her reply was "If you don't give me your SIN then I can not help you" and she hung up on me!  DEFINETLY A SCAM!!!!  NEVER GIVE YOUR SIN OVER THE PHONE!

I just found this number on my answering machine from three days ago.  After listening to it three times, and through all the garbled accent, I could hear she was claiming to be from Revenue Canada, and wasn't asking for my SIN number, but my client ID. Even real Rev Can agents only ask for the first two digits of that number. I'm amazed that NS, Canada even got a live person when they called, because usually scammers just use automated systems... they're too f***ing lazy. But especially do NOT give out that ID number, since they can do even more with that in combination with your SIN #. But please... an entire generation of e-mail spam should have taught us all how to smell a rat at the first stink.

How about you Concerned? Do you work for this scam number? A bunch of other posters here just said that Revenue Canada does NOT acknowledge that number.

I received this call this morning around 11:p.m. He said he was an agent from Revenue Canada, and wanted to verfied my address, then he said you moved recently and wanted my previous address, That is when my intuition kicked in and I told him I was not going to give any personal information over the phone. He then went on to say that  that I could call this number to 1-866-864-5841 and that he's name was Garet(which he spelled) and his ID # was 12248.  and for me to call.  Well I know this is just another scam. Then I went online and keyed in this number and this is what I found. Hope this information will help someone.

I Received a call this morning 11:a.m. April 15, 2010.  It was from this number 1-866-864-5841.  He said he was an agent from Revenue Canada.  He repeated my full name, the number and street, where I lived.  He then went on to ask me if I had moved recently and I told him yes.  He then asked me for my previous address.  I then became very suspicious and told him I was not going to give him any personal information over the phone. He said he understood, and proceeded to assure he  was from Revenue Canada.  He also gave me this phone number and his name and ID number.  His name is Garet (which he spelled for me) and his ID # is 12248. He wanted me to call Revenue Canada and verfied that this call was from Revenue Canada.  I then went on line and keyed in the phone number and found a lot of other people who are receiving the same similar  calls.  I feel that this is a Scam, just another way to get personal information.  Why would Revenue Canada call me for personal information, they already have in their possession?   Thank you.

    Nice Try
Was called by 1-866-864-5835. A man who did not identify himself ask for my husband. When I told him that he was not home, he informed me that my husband had to call Revenue Canada at 1-866-864-5841, between 8am and 8pm Eastern, with client ID and/or Social Insurance number to identify himself. When I asked him how we would know if we actually talked to Revenue Canada or not he did not answer the question. He just asked to know with whom he had left his message and hung up. Surely, in this day and age, it seems rather naive to assume that the public will simply hand over personal indentification numbers to unidentified callers. So, what else could it be but a scam?

I also found the same message on my answering machine earlier today. I don’t think I will call. Government normally communicate in writing, not asking for SIN over the phone.

Well...  confusion solved... turns out the 866-864-5841 number is for real.  It is a real Canada Revenue Agency number, but they contacted me by mail AND phone, without one acknowledging the other. The phone message was from a person who didn't speak english very well, and it was about a matter that had already been cleared up. The inter-bureaucracy mix-up led to me thinking it was a scam. Try phoning 1-800-O-Canada (1-800-622-6232), and they will identify the number. So, sorry Concerned, you were correct.

I just received a phone call to my cell phone.  Revenue Canada was never given this number.  The person did not give their name - they said that they had important message for me and asked for me to give out my SIN number and address to confirm my identity.  I told them that I do not give out personal info over the phone.  He gave me a number to call back.  Interesting connection - maybe this is random - I recently placed an ad on kijiji with my cell phone number....I wonder if that is where he is getting it from.
