Contacted Canada Revenue Agency...This is NOT one of their numbers.  Was told to contact the RCMP and spoke to Cont. Wright who advised that this is indeed FRAUD and they are aware of this number!!!  DO NOT GIVE YOUR INFORMATION out over the phone.  They called me yet again today and I told them off.  I also told them I had contacted the RCMP.  He hung up.  I decided to call the number back and the woman who answered the phone said that if I did not give her my SIN she would not be able to help me.  When I told her I knew it was a scam and that they had been reported she said "well then I can't help you"....she didnt even ask for my name, or my phone number.  Canada Revenue contacts you via MAIL...not by phone.  Also, they are saying they are the Canada Revenue collection agency, to which is Fraud as well, and I do NOT have any money owing to the government.  The officer I spoke to said that it is from overseas and they are having difficulty trying to stop it.  But that it is INDEED FRAUD!!!! This is confirmed by CRA and RCMP!!!

The number is a legitimate Canada Revenue number!!! When they leave a message they already have your SIN, it is a number for the collection department for EI overpayments or defaulted student loans. People should really call back and pay their damn bills!! The number on the call display us 1-866-864-5835, they have a few numbers but is legit, the call back phone number left on the answering machines helps CRA determine the type of debt they are calling about if it is EI the number is 1-866-864-5841 if is a defaulted Federal Student loan the call back number is 1-866-863-5825. You can verify the legitimacy of either number by calling 1-800-OCANADA. Trust me I know for a fact it is CRA

This is CVB Credit Collections....a third party collection agency who is illegally representing themselves as Revenue Canada.

Another thing, Revenue Canada is just that....REVENUE CANADA and then the department (ie: Revenue Canada Taxation, Revenue Canada Customs & Border Services etc) and will never call themselves "Canada Revenue Agency" as that is NOT their official title.

btw a friend of mine works at Revenue Canada Taxation as a Collection Agent and has confirmed the above for me as being true.

My wife keeps getting a message from this number on her cell phone which she has only had for a few months. Supposedly Canada Revenue Agency calling for David Alcock to call back and have his SIN number ready. Pity the poor person who bites on this scam.

Some foreign speaking lady called me , said she was from the CRA debt collection, had my maiden name...strange since I have been married for 30 years.  I asked her for her supervisor and was told she didn't have one?  Truley think it is a collection agency or a scam....calling CRA in the morning to report this

I just got a call from this number .. What do I do? I read the posts and i don't wnna call giving my sin number .. And he left no name which is wired :S the number isn't on service Canada website...how can i verify if this is not a scam ?? :S

what research google shows up zero numbers related to canada revenue with this number on it. I call BS - sounds like another scam to me.

Call display showed as 866-864-5835 and a person asked an identified occupant to call 866-458-5841. The call display read GOC-GDC. A male voice without accent was used. The occupant was asked to have a client  number available. We will not return the call. Gov. of Canada does not do business this way. They communicate using letters, most often registered.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THEM NOR RETURN CALLS unless you wish to Mr. or Ms. Stupid. Don't buy into the the authoritarian mannerisms. Canadians are notorious  [***] for authority. We need to change.

Just got a call from some guy whose number came up as 1 866 864-5835. He asked my name and wanted some personal information. When I told him that I don't give out personal info over the phone, he said that this was regarding a personal matter. I told him I did not believe him and he told me to call 1 800 O canada to verify that his number is legit. When I called O canada, the man who answered told me that the number belonged to Canada Revenue! The original caller told me that after I verified his number, to call him back with my S.I.N. number! I will not be calling him back because I believe it is a scam! I am going to call the RCMP and report this.

I never received a phone call or mail. I showed up at work Jan 16th and was given a email letter that was sent to my works payroll department. The email which read Please call CRA - 1-866-864-5841, open Mon to Fri 8am to 9pm EST. please have your SIN as reference number.

I have searched up and down for this number and getting mix reactions. Some say it is Canada revenue agency and some say its a scam. I will not give up my SIN # over the phone or email. I will be calling Revenue Canada tomorrow to see whats up with this number.

I called Revenue Canada and asked them about the phone number, it was not them who sent the email, nor do they ask for SIN numbers. He also stated that when Revenue Canada does call/sends emails, the department is listed as Revenue Canada has different departments.

I THOUGHT I was a fraud victim from this number after reading the comments on this site! I called Revenue Canada to confirm that they had contacted me about a Bill I owed. They said it may not show on there computers if I was indeed contacted and the only way to be sure is call Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) 1-800-206-7218 a number confirmed by Service Canada. When I called they had confirmed this was indeed a EI agent from Canada Revenue. This is legit. Note: I received a letter in the mail first with my client ID number and what I owed. My social insurance number was on the letter... Thats all they need for fraud if it was fraud. They would have not contacted me back. Next time people should do better research before posting a bunch of BS

Caller identified herself as Canada Government Agency saying it was urgent to call back and provide SIN number. Did not leave her name.

I received the same message today, May 2, 2014. The person (male) had a very weird accent and he was very rude when I told him that my wife is not available and asked how I could help him. He said "this does not concern you; it concerns your wife. Good night sir!"  He gave me the same number 866-864-5841 for her to call any agent that answers the phone.

I just received the same message.  Asking for SIN raised the red flag so I checked the CRA website and I didn't see the number anywhere.  Judging by the dates on other posts this scam attempt has been going on for some time.

I posted before (May 2, 2014).  The caller this time was a woman with a slight accent, not like the previous caller with the weird accent.  She identified herself as a CRA agent and wanted to speak to my wife regarding an "overpayment." I told her that I am my wife's official representative and am ready to help her.  She said, "no you are not her representative, so let your wife call this number:1-864-5841."  I told her my wife will not be calling anybody on that number and if she (the so-called agent) needed any information from her, to just send her a letter.  She then hung up on me.

I just got call tray with 5841 number. She was rude and said she wanted my SIN and Birthdate. I told her I sony give my info over the phone and she said to call OCANADA to verify, I told her that they are closed. She insisted they were open. I told her I work for the government and I do NOT give my info over the phone. Than she hung up.
