    If you get a call and you are sure it can't be you, call back. There is a ton of indentity theft these days and I have personally seen many people lose their entire credit history and not be able to even to get a cell phone after an ID theft. It takes years to clean up and even longer if you choose to ignore it. Getting rude with anyone on the phone all because you feel scared and feel blindsided, isn't going to solve anything. Colletion officers are not customer service reps and not paid to be nice. They will help you if you are civil and only get nasty when you choose to get nasty. You can call them rude and uneducated and not knowing what they are talking about but ask yourself, why they are calling you? Nine times out of ten it is a matter of completely forgetting or not knowing about an old outstanding debt and it's something that has been affecting your score for years and you won't know about it til you decide to purchase something. If you can muster the courage to call these people back civilly, do a little investigation, they will help you to give you the tools to investigate why YOU have ended up in YOUR predicament. It isn't the officer's job to prove you owe a bill if you are denying it, it is YOUR job to prove you DON'T owe it to the company that it was originally outstanding with. An officer will help you with the info you need on how to dispute or claim fraud but if you refuse to call back or get vile with people, it is an indication that you do actually owe the debt.  Not paying bills is a pattern of avoidance so avoiding calls is an indicator of guilt. So, long story short, if you really don't owe it, follow up and keep in contact with both the collection agency and the client that the debt was originally owed to while disputing the bill. As for you all that hang up and complain that people are rude, no officer likes to have to get rude, it an officer's job to get the bill paid, not fight. It is indicative that you got rude with them. Keep in mind that you are no longer a customer of the client that you owe the amount to and that you are no longer longer in the power position of the customer knows best because you service has been cut off... you are now an ex-customer and they have written you off so they have no use or interest to bring you back and don't care what action is taken... up to and including legal action against you. Now an item on your credit history in most provinces stays for 7 years but a legal judgement stays for 10 years. It is just best to deal with all of this head on and with a calm head.

    there is no legit collections agency when you get down to it. its all based off of contract law and if the collection agency does not have an actual contract with you then it is fraudulent. they usually buy debts from various companies at around 5-10% of the actual cost and then try to pressure you into paying even though they dont actually have authority to do so.

    They also collect for Rogers. I refuse to answer their calls. I have left a vm and sent a registered letter that they must correspond by mail. I will not take their calls as they are as untrustworthy as Rogers.

    I receive a call daily from 204-318-6207 or 204-318-1707 which I never pick up and they leave a message asking me to call back 866-958-5850 telling me its not a marketing call but have a business proposition for me.  I did pick up the phone one time they called and a recorded message said 'all our agents are busy right now please hold until one becomes available' - um, if a company calls me I am not going to wait in a queue if they initiated the call.  Its all very bizarre and dodgy sounding.  I am writing to my cell phone company to see if they can be blocked.

    Call coming from this number with extn no.and reference no.at 9:00am on Saturday, asking to discuss a commercial credit issue with them that I never have a clue about it.
    Is it possible to block this phone number?

    TO stop them calling you just tell them all contact with me must be done in writing from now on. Once you tell them this they no longer can call you. Just make sure that you record it so you can prove you asked for that. If they call you more than 3 times in one week they can be charged also

    So, I just got a call from 1-866-958-5850 - an automated voice prompting me to call this number as the matter is urgent...to dial extension 704 and a reference number...I tried calling back - they asked ME to leave a message. AS IF. I'll wait until a human being calls me, then I will ask them to send me some proof through the mail! :)

    No, the calls are not legitimate.  They do not include a file or case number but simply identify the victim by their name.  Once you do phone them back you will be added to their database and they will link both you and their original victim as connected.  This way, over time, they can build an international database of linked names and numbers to help track you.

    They have nothing to do with old overdue cable bills and such.

    This number keeps calling and playing a recorded message - "this is not a sales call - this is a very important call...".  I always hang up by then - not sure what the rest of the recorded message says.

    Yes, I think you're right. They are a third party, and have no standing. I believe that, once they "buy" the debt, they've "paid" the debt. Their business model is fundamentally flawed. They're preying on the ignorance of the average man or woman.

    Huh? If someone alleged a debt, the onus is on the alleged debtor to disprove it?(No) Also, can I buy someone else's alleged debt, and then demand payment from them?(No) If I "bought" someone's alleged debt, would that be the equivalent of "paying" the debt?(Yes) LOL :)

    You get a "404 not found" obviously they do not want anyone to see who they are. I will just add them to my "Do Not Answer" list. I think some of these collection agencies are actually scammers because I had paid this one company $200.00 and they never sent me a receipt and the company I owed money to said they never received that payment. They are called ADT collection or something like that. So if you owe money to a legitimate company pay them instead. Never trust those collectors. Only desperate people work for them. After you pay you the company answer their calls and tell them you already settled the debt. The thing is too is that they will not clear your name which will affect your credit rating because they will file against you with a popular collection agency. Someone should sue those scammers. As far as my $200.00 is concerned I'm S&@t OUT Of LUCK! I should have just said "go ahead and take me to court."
