- Annoyed NJThere is no Sovereign Bank. It was bought over by a Spanish bank and is now and has been for quite awhile Santander. My daughter works for Chase Bank and says no bank solicits over phone. You can call bank to discuss but with so many scammers, it is recommended YOU call or go to your branch.
NEVER give out ANY information. Plus, if you have an online account with your bank, all info and notices will be on that site. Beware of receiving
email from what you may think are real banks using official looking wording or using bank name in the title/email.- Caller: Online Banking
- PeterI didn't answer the call when I saw the 877 prefix; no message was left; I called the number and got the regular voice mail "Welcome to Santander" followed by the usual voice prompts. The 877 number is NOT the number I call when checking my account activity. I think I know what's going on: some time back, before Sovereign changed its name to Santander, either clever scammers hacked into Sovereign and got hold of a list of names and phone numbers of account holders at that time, or an employee stole that information. Now they are using that old list to steal account information.
1) From what I've read above from those who bothered to answer the phone, the scammers deal directly with the potential victim by asking for the information they need to access the target victim's account.
2) Banking on victims' suspicion or curiousity, the scammers have recorded the voice prompts and are using a real phone number hooked up to their voicemail system. Everything sounds normal. And they get the information they need. (In my own case, I made up an access code; I did not use my Soc. Sec. no.)
Why the Sovereign vs. Santander mix-up? Because the scammers aren't perfect. If and when they read this post, they may well make the correction.
I am thinking of going down to my local Santander bank with this 877 number, having the manager check it out then and there, and insisting they contact the FBI.- Caller: UNAVAILABLE
- BostonHollyI'm tired of these time wasting hang up calls and I *do* have an account. It's insulting that they have so little regard for their customers that they waste our time for nothing.
- Caller: Santander ?
- Call type: Telemarketer
- BostonHolly replies to BrianI have overdraft protection w/the originally named Sovereign bank now bought out by Santander. So it can't be their reason for calling. If it is in fact any bank at all calling.
- JenScammers pretending to be Sandander Bank trying to get your social security number. Verified with bank this is a scam call!
- Caller: Online banking
- lissa0035 replies to schulieYes, they actually started to change there name to santander last October. However the post you replied too was from 2010.
- FrustratedThis number keeps calling and once they hear a voice they hang up.

I've gotten a few of these lately. Also a couple a long time ago that stopped when I went into
the local bank and yelled at a manager. I have enough money there that they don't
want to annoy me. So why more now? I dunno. I've blocked the number.
The digits spell 877-SOV-BANK, in case you hadn't noticed. So it IS their number.
But with the modern phone number forging techniques, it may or may not be
Sovereign/Santander actually making the calls.
Bob- Caller: Maybe Santander bank
- iknowthem replies to rebelangelSANTANDER bank has the number 877-768-2265 - I called them back and told them not to call me again about a month ago. The person I spoke to was: SHANAE TODMAN - she told me that she put a note on my account "not to call" - guess what - TODAY AGAIN A CALL FROM SANTANDER BANK rang but I did not pick up. This bank was Soveiregn Bank before this spanish bank bought it or took it over. Perhaps they are exempt from the rules of the DO NOT CALL. Unfortunately I have an account with them. NOW I wonder if they are safe or not.
- Don'tScamMeRcvd call SEPT 25 1:56PM. Caller ID read Unavailable 877-768-2265. I didn't answer.
Based on all the comments, I would say this is a spoofed number. I have had an account with Sovereign, now Santander Bank, for many years. They have never called me. I have both a personal and business account. This call came to my unlisted home landline. That is the number the bank has on file for me. While I use my cell phone to access banking by phone, I have never received a call saying it is the bank's number on my cell phone. Scammers at work, not the bank!- Call type: Prank
- annoyed in njI don't think telemarketers in India, Nepal and Bangladesh care if you're on the Do Not Call list. Are they even legally required to follow that law since they're probably not in the USA?
I once got a phone call that was clearly listed as a 973 # from Newark, NJ on my caller ID, but when I Googled it it was from a district in India. So these companies know how to get around that Do Not Call List. These companies are 2 steps ahead of us.
For 877-768-2265 my caller id says "Online Banking". It doesn't say Santander. They call a few times each week. Sometimes a few times a day.- Caller: Online Banking

- justinI get a call from them a few times a week .my phone hangs up on them,About 2 years ago I bought a call blocker box on e-bay,best 35 bucks I ever spent..Now I just sit back and laugh at the jerks ,the box can hold 1500 numbers on its black list ,and you can block those pesky unkown callers too..

- CrankyI keep getting calls from this number. I don't answer numbers I don't recognize. If they don't leave a message, I don't bother calling back. I read on here it was Santander Bank??
- Caller: Unavailable
- Christine replies to privacy invasionI was told that these calls are actually from an outside company that handles Santanders promotional type of stuff. Normally if its important, something about your account, than they will always leave a message. I just let these calls go to the answering machine.
- FrustratedCaller ID said Massachusetts, no message left. Blocked number with software/computer modem combination. Fairly effective. I can't believe scam artists and telemarketers find enough people to profit on. Since most people screen their calls now-a-days.
- Caller: Massachusetts
- LindseyIt's Santander. I'm pretty sure it's really Santander because that's their official customer service number on their website, but it's also possible someone's disguising the number I guess. I never pick up, and they call me at work all the time. (Never my cell phone, which would seem more appropriate.) They never leave a message. Very annoying.
- Caller: Santander Bank
- anonymous2Caller ID says call from "Unavailable"
Never leaves message, hangs up. Phones regularly. Had blocked this # months ago and needed to make space for the newer ones. Hoped they'd given up after being disconnected every day but no such luck. Incredibly irritating. - jim pro replies to mistynumber is blocked but keep getting calls
- You Again?Santander formerly Sovereign Bank looking for the owner or financial decision maker so they can make their sales pitch. Made them specify what company they were calling. Sorry, that company was sold and no longer exists. Hopefully they will update their records and not call back. What are my chances?
- Caller: Santander
- Call type: Telemarketer
- AmySays the company is TGI... I tried to google it, nothing close to Santander Bank came up, they've been calling for awhile now I asked if they were soliciting and they kept repeating the same line that they can only talk to the owner or financial decider... now I know not to pick up, basically Im guessing Santander sold my info to this company so if you have an account with them you may be getting these calls too.
