I didn't trust this call -- I requested that they make the request in writing for information because they were calling about my 12 year old daughter's claim on her knee injury. They said they would mail me the packet. When I receive it, I will call UHC and speak to them directly.

I received a couple of calls from them, when I finally answered, I was connected to Optum... they do claims verification for UHC, to make sure they claims are legit. Had to take my daughter to the ER, and they made the recommendation to UHC to pay the hospital.

Same here, got a message on my vice mail from 888-200-1118 with the case number asking to call back. I called my UHC, gave a representative the case number and was told that this is scam and UHC NEVER call  with case number or anything, they send the letter instead, this is UHC policy.

This is a completely legitimate call. They are hired by UHC to check on some of the claims to make sure they are valid. I got a call because I had a hip replacement but the visiting nurse coded as a back injury so they were calling to see if it was accident related.

Like other users suggested, I called UnitedHealth Care to verify the number and the call. They said they didn't have any record of the call but acknowledged that they might not have the info if another representative was currently editing it. (I called UHC within 2 minutes of receiving the call from this number.) After I kept pressing them for more info, they called the number themselves and were able to verify that it was indeed Harvard Pilgrim calling on behalf of UnitedHealth Care.

THIS IS A REAL CALL!!! I almost didn't return the call, but they are just a company working for united healthcare and checking to make sure my ankle injury really did happen on my own time.

Please give us more info about this supposed company that pleased you so well.

If you do not tell us the current, legal full name of the company, its legal address and website, we can consider your post to have been made by a shill for some anonymous company using this phone number.  After all, who looks up a phone number on a phone complaints site if they knew who called?

I was suspicious at first. Called number on my United Healthcare card, they advised it was legit.

Called UHC and talked to a representative. She told me that UHC does make automated calls if informational updates are needed. Apparently, UHC wanted to see if I needed to add a secondary phone number to my account. It did seem scam-ish, but this number is legit.

This is a legitamate call.  I had to spend time in the hospital from an infected dog bite and they called to audit the bills, basically determining whether or not a 3rd party is liable and whether they will be due compensation for bills paid under my policy once I receive the settlement.

Received a telephone call last week, and they left a message.  Looked online for the number and saw many "scam" reports.  I called UHC with the information, and they did not know anything about the number.  Received another call today, but noticed that they left a website address as well.  Noticed that it included "Optum" -- so I went there and saw that it appeared to be Optum.  I called the number, entered the case number and my DOB, after which they referenced the date of a recent ER visit.  From there, a robot asked me four yes/no questions.

Like everyone else, it seemed suspicious, so I called the actual number for UnitedHealthcare on the back of my insurance card. They said they did not make the call, and the number that called me is not one they have registered through them. She said DO NOT give any personal information to this company, and she was working on reporting it.

This exact same thing happened to me.  They have called twice now leaving messages. We called both Optium and United Health Care and they said they did not call us.  I am curious how the name Optium comes up on the caller ID but they say they are calling from United Health Care?  I called the # back from my work and it seems good and they are acting professional with the automated message and etc. but I hung up because I know it is a SCAM !!!!!!

Received robo call from 888.200.1118. They said they were United Health Care and wanted a call back. Referenced a file number that I have no record of. Glad I checked here first. I am shopping for car insurance and my phone is lighting up with garbage calls. Using a Magic Jack phone number to send them to. It has really saved interruptions from unwanted calls.

The large number of  shillers basically posting to  tell everyone how "legit" this number is, is pretty strong evidence of a scam.

This number is  most likely part of a larger fraud campaign targeting the customers of large-scale financial or commercial institutions.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real,   is evidence of con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.
Thirty-seven entries in this thread and I count 18 as shill posts.

At a  49 % shill rate, there should be no question that this is part of a scam.  At least that's the way I see it based on my own research. I've seen percentages go even higher.

This  scam is well documented.  Simply google it out.  Based  on my research this scam has been going on since about 2008.

These type of calls follow a  similar pattern.  They all  claim to be from groups like Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, Fifth Third Bank, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc as well as Credit Unions.  Or claim to be CC processors. Or “Fraud Detection”.

All with the same type of   postings.  All claiming there is something wrong with your card or that some questionable purchase has been made.  Or something similar.  They all ask for personal or personal financial information.

Just part of the shillers  criminal MO.

I've noticed the  shill posters often use the same turns of phrase.  Same old, same old verbiage telling  everyone how "legit" the calls are.

Personally I think the group or groups  posting this shillage-spillage are located in either the US or Canada, or perhaps both.  They may also be working with scammers outside of North America.

In any event , never give out any personal or financial information to anyone who cold calls you.  If there are any problems with your card, always call the number on the back of the card or the official number on the monthly statement you receive.

Call history on 800notes for this type of scam, so far.  (That I’ve been able to find.)

My spouse got a robo call from this number (I am the primary UHC member).  I called the number on the back of my UHC card and explained what happened.  The UHC rep said they did not initiate the call, they had no questions about any claims, and they would never ask for a case number as the message did. Ignoring the call.
