I just received a call from a woman who said she was with Wells Fargo Bank. She asked if she could verify my identity and I refused. She asked if I was a Wells Fargo customer and I told her I was not. She apologized for the call then hung up. I could tell this was a scam. Never give out any personal information over the phone even if the caller ID shows the name of a company. After all that can be bogus!!

No, it isn't a scam, it really is Wells Fargo fraud dept.
If they contacted you re: your Wells Fargo acct.  and you don't have one, call Wells Fargo, ask for their fraud dept. and have the acct. blocked and an investigation initiated.

I received a voicemail similar to Margie's above about Wells Fargo calling me in regards to a case # and to respond by calling this number.  I ignored it. But today I received a letter in the mail from Wells Fargo Fraud & Claims Management in Sioux Falls, SD about "2 account numbers that appear to have information provided when the account was opened is inconsistent with internal and public records."  Then they ask at end of letter to call this number with questions.  I have never had any accounts with Wells Fargo bank ever!  This is definitely a scam - be aware!

Got a call yesterday from this number and answered it because someone had recently hacked my unemployment account and I assumed it could have been them contacting me so I answered and the lady said she was from Wells Fargo and accts have been opened in my name. I hope this is not another scam because if so I fell for it!!! I really thought because someone hacked my other account now someone was trying to open accounts in my name being they have access to one. What should I do from here ?

I work for WF this is a legitimate number for our Prevention Contact Center. I do find it odd that we do not list the phone number on our website, as someone who makes these calls I can totally see why customers are hesitant. If you are ever worried you can contact your local and branch or the 1800 number on the back of your card and ask them to help you research the number

Hi. I just received a letter from Wells Fargo saying they were shutting my non-existing account down. When I called this number (888-231-0757) the lady asked for my social to file an identity theft report. Should they be asking for that? Seems fishy. I think this is not Wells Fargo.

Yep, really weird. I got a letter saying the same. They asked for my social which seems crazy to me. I didn’t give it and hung up and came here.

This is not a scam number. The number is Wells Fargo fraud prevention / identity theft advocacy. I just spent the last hour on the phone with Wells Fargo (I called their regular 800 number and was transferred to their fraud department). If you received a letter in the mail saying that you have accounts that are being closed due to suspicious activity, they are real, and somebody has stolen your identity. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. You should immediately call Wells Fargo and ask to speak to somebody in their fraud prevention department to open a case. If you don’t, your info will continue to be used to open accounts through their online application process. Be smart. Don’t become a victim.

The letter is real. I got one today and called Wells Fargo ( not the number on the letter).  Someone had indeed stolen my identity and opened two accounts. This is real - call Wells Fargo 800 number immediately

It’s not a scam – I just spent the last hour on the phone after calling Wells Fargo 800 number that I found on Google (because I did not want to call the number on the letters I received), and it turns out that somebody had opened two accounts with my information. Do not put this off - be proactive and call Wells Fargo so they can initiate the case and put in place safeguards so nobody is able to use your information to open another Wells Fargo account through their online application process again.

Received a msg saying that an account was opened in my name and they suspected fraud.  I called back saying a account was opened in my name 08/30 ( wasn’t me) . The strange thing was she kept asking for my SSN ( which like an idiot I gave to her) when she should have had it.  I’m feeling uneasy . Not sure if it’s legit or not.

I got a call from this number twice. I answered the second time and she claimed to be from Wells Fargo fraud. She had a lot of information on me already like she knew my last 4 digits of SS (she asked me to verify by providing it herself) and she had the last 4 digits of a CC number from my card from Wells. Claimed someone tried to do a balance transfer of $2000 out of state twice. She asked me to call them to report fraud and gave me a case number.

After I hung up, I immediately was suspicious of the call and called wells fargo CC fraud line. They confirmed it was a legitimate call and saw 2 fraudulent transactions. They closed the card and are sending me a new one.

It looks to be legitimate but it's best to be careful answering any sort of calls like this. I would just hang up if you're suspicious or decline and call the fraud number on their website to confirm. DO NOT give any information out over the phone unless you are SURE.

I received a voice mail that claimed to be "Tyler from Wells Fargo Bank", and giving this number to call back. I have no Wells Fargo account of any kind, but I called. The automated system says it is Wells Fargo, but put me on an endless hold, and no one ever came on the line. Note: the number showing on my phone that the came from was 800-548-9554, but gave 888-231-0757 as the callback number. Based on the other complaints I see here, it appears to be a scam.
