- Big Mack replies to JIMIf you want to find out if a charity is legitimate, google this search term online:
"(your state) charitable registration search"
The search should take you to the Attorney General's or the Secretary of State's website. Every charity that solicits donations over the phone MUST be registered in YOUR state. With the name of the charity, you can find out if they are real, and does the state approve of them doing business in your state.
I work for a charity in VA and I'm in charge of our non-profits state registrations across the country. It's the easiest way to answer the "is this a legitimate charity?" question. - BudCalled me 7 times in last 5 days robocalling using a Baltimore number (410-246-5757). Last time I asked for employee ID number, and wasgiven o another woman. She said her name was C?? Jones ID number 313565901 and that she was a manager. Info on this charity shows it to provide little if any help to patients. I told her that now that I had her info, if they called again, I would file harrassment chrges locally. She also provided the following office phone number, I did not trry it yet. 315 565-5214. Bottom line, if a charity has to buy phone numbers and robocall them, they are not legit

- CSS Scammer ServicesI got a call from Cancer Support Services and told them to send info and I would review. I received their donation request in the mail and did my research after which I tore up the mail and threw it in the garbage. This company does not appear to help anyone but the people at the top that are living high off the hog of off others.

- MichaelAsked what percentage of the donation goes to the people with cancer or services for them. Caller didn't know as she was in training. Said she'd get her manager for me. I declined and said I'd do my own research. Less than 17 cents of every dollar they get through this method goes to people with cancer or support services for them. They have administrative and fundraising costs that eat up the other 83 cents. Hmmmm. No thanks. For easy access to info about these charities see: charity navigator.org without the space between charity and navigator. (Site wouldn't let me type it as all one word.)

- the ministerThis organization is "spoofing" (illegal & a crime) local numbers (337-717-3110, a number formally belonging yo a now closed business 35 miles from me) which have not been used in years or in working order. It's a shame and horrible; lost my daddy to cancer 5 yrs ago & I've never heard of this organization. Think it's also a scumbag who asks, "if you want yo be removed, give us a donation!" That's called blackmail & here in Louisiana (though we may not be know for ethics and such) this type of fake funds is not tolerated. They are targeting elderly (55 & over), and I'm thankful that I'm alert to scumbags! Asked for my much older than I husband and then "read her script". I told her, "Ma'am, I've never donated to your organization before, never heard of it!" She tell tried to explain to me HER/THEIR version of how DNC works...I then said, "Ma'am IF I hadn't given to your organization before that would apply but not in this case...an unlisted/private phone number for the last 25 or more years!"

- Susan H replies to ZEKETonight I was solicited by someone who was saying they were calling from Cancer Support Services. First of all, she called me Mrs., so I knew right off the bat, they didn't know me. Not a big deal. She said that she wanted to know if my pledge of $15 was to be expected. I had been happing, but when this not-making-enough-to-live-on substitute teacher heard I donated money, I woke up immediately. What? When? She told me January. Really? I have never heard of this organization, and I do donate to the American Cancer Society, though I misspoke and said, I can't contribute to the American Cancer Society because I keep my money local. She told me again that she was with Cancer Support Services and they provide local people with diapers, and supplies, and what not. I told her that I had never talked to someone about pledging, and she said well someone in your household must have. I think the other person in my household would have used their own name. I hate to be suspicious, but I think there's a scam going on and if this is true, this is the lowest of lows.

FTC: Scam cancer charities kept millions of dollars
By David Fitzpatrick and Drew Griffin, CNN Investigations
Updated 12:56 PM ET, Fri April 1, 2016
New York (CNN)During a four year period starting in 2008, executives of two sham cancer charities paid themselves and their fundraisers more than $65 million, according to figures released by the Federal Trade Commission.
Court documents filed by the FTC and the attorneys general of all 50 states show that the Cancer Fund of America and a related charity called Cancer Support Services paid a total of $65.5 million, which represented 86.4% of the $75 million donated to those charities in that same time period. The money went to pay for telemarketing calls, salaries and perks. In all, the government says, the charities donated around 2.5% of their donations to actual charity.
Federal Trade Commission: Four cancer charities a sham
"The FTC and our state enforcement partners have ended a pernicious charity fraud that syphoned hundreds of millions of dollars away from well-meaning consumers, legitimate charities, and people with cancer who needed the services the defendants falsely promised," said Jessica Rich of the Federal Trade Commission.
Government says four cancer charities are shams
CNN began reporting on these charities and two other cancer charities more than two years ago. All four were connected to the same man, James Reynolds Sr., of Knoxville, Tennessee. He ran the Cancer Fund of America, his ex-wife, Rose Perkins, ran the Children's Cancer Fund of America. Their son, James Reynolds Junior, ran The Breast Cancer Society. An associate of Reynolds Sr., Kyle Effler, operated Cancer Support Services. All have now agreed to close their doors and not contest the FTC allegations.
Overall, the FTC says these charities bilked donors out of $187 million. An attorney for James Reynolds Sr. did not respond to CNN's request for comment.
One of the letters, signed by James Reynolds Sr., asked for money because "all of our funds are committed" to helping cancer patients.
When the FTC first brought the case last year, it alleged that most of the money donated went to salaries and personal expenses, including trips to Disney World and payment of relatives who wound up working for the charities.
