The American Cancer society is no more Legit than a smaller organization like this. Let me assure you, they are the WEALTHIEST non-profit in the US. They SEEM to be doing all this good work, because yes, they are extremely popular with charitable folks, so they RAISE TONS, of money, use a large portion to help, and another EXTREMELY large portion goes "other" things.

There are no 3rd party telemarketing firms hired to make calls. The people who raise funds are directly with the charity.

Well, if they are going to sue for defamation, then let me get in line, because I am calling them a SCAM TOO.  I got a call from them today from an unknown/unavailable number, and asked for me by name.  They call several times a week EVERY WEEK, from several different numbers, or like today, from a spoofed number.

If you are truly a legitimate origination, why hid your identity?  Or do you do it because you know people won't answer their phone if they see it is YOU calling.

This is the link to the better business bureau site that tells about this scam.  Take a moment to read it.  It says that less than 1 cent of every dollar is given to help cancer victims.  It says that "...99 percent of all cash donations to the organization pay professional fundraising costs, salaries for charity officials, consultant fees and other expenses related to the charity’s operations."  If you want to give to the american cancer society or ANY legitimate charity, contact that organization directly and donate.  At best these telemarketing companies are middle men who take the lions share and leave little or nothing to the charity.  Let's put them out of business!

I have worked for this company before and it seemed great at first until you hear all the issues involved in it.It makes you wonder if they really are helping people or just getting a bang for a buck. It's truly dissapointing to see one supposed charity ruin it for other potentially good charities out there. I generally donate to people that have valid information on their organization. There are charities out there that I have never heard of and look an appear promising and I have given to them before. I always check out the websit to see how legit they are before I give. I generally would rather call a charity than have them call me when it comes to a donation. I like to give on my own time and money. So, since there are millions of charities out there, it is hard to choose which one is legit and which one isn't. Always do your research before actually giving. Thank you!

I've worked for them so the reason the phone does that is because it's calling from a predictive dialer meaning that you can hear and say something first before the other person on the other side picks up or answers. It's an annoying system but they use it anyways because they call a million people a day to raise funds for there cause. To them it's the most fastest and efficient way I guess. It's an annoying pause I know, but unfortunately it is what it is.

They called me..were rude..practically ordered me to pay..said my husband committed he would on Aug.10th..wouldn't let me talk..told me no one called from their number since Aug..10..I looked on my caller ID..there are 11 calls since 9/11/11..till today..9/15/11..one on sunday morning at 8am...she all but called me a liar..I was mad when she hung up..tried to call the number back...won't answer..just machine..and when you push any number they tell you..it hangs up or busy signal...the number is 1-877-846-6879..I plan on reporting this to the BBB..we collect money at work for cancer and I have never seen no one act like these people...

They started calling my business number recently.  However, not the number here ... but TWO different ones.

408-418-5604 and 408-418-5696! After they annoyed me the first time, I placed the number on call screen to block it as these calls are both uninvited and unwelcome.... especially on my business phone!!!! And almost a month later they're back with this second number!!!! What the H*ll don't these people get? You don't reach us, we don't respond then we don't want your calls! STOP CALLING US!!!! I have made up my mind about this bunch ... I absolutely will NOT donate (especially after what I have read about them)!!!!

I think this is the number I keep getting calls from.  No number appears on the Caller ID, it simply reads OUT OF AREA.  I picked up today and asked who they were, hoping to get a number to backtrace but they didn't give me one.  They did say they were from the Cancer Fund of America though.  Not sure if this is the right number specifically, they seem to use many.  Again, no number appeared on the CID.

My 85 year old father has fallen victim to this organization.  They have harassed him by telephone and the mail and their representative convinced him that he "owes" them money.  They have even sent him "friendly notices" reminding him that he promised to make a donation even after he had already sent them a check.  I think these people should be ashamed of themselves for using such a devastating thing as childhood cancer to prey upon the elderly and people who think they are doing the "right" thing by sending money to this organization.  It is a shame that this is taking money from legitimate charities, such as St. Jude, which really do help children fight this dreaded illness.

Please do not call , mail info or contact at all.

I agree it, very well may be a scam.I refuse to donate.

Nor registerd with BBB, the website they have has a warning, comsumers are taking a risk with this company.End of story They are a scam.

If you want to find out if a charity is legitimate, google this search term online:

"(your state) charitable registration search"

The search should take you to the Attorney General's or the Secretary of State's website.  Every charity that solicits donations over the phone MUST be registered in YOUR state.  With the name of the charity, you can find out if they are real, and does the state approve of them doing business in your state.

I work for a charity in VA and I'm in charge of our non-profits state registrations across the country.  It's the easiest way to answer the "is this a legitimate charity?" question.

Called me 7 times in last 5 days robocalling using a Baltimore number (410-246-5757). Last time I asked for employee ID number, and wasgiven o another woman. She said her name was C?? Jones ID number 313565901 and that she was a manager. Info on this charity shows it to provide little if any help to patients. I told her that now that I had her info, if they called again, I would file harrassment chrges locally. She also provided the following office phone number, I did not trry it yet. 315 565-5214. Bottom line, if a charity has to buy phone numbers and robocall them, they are not legit

I got a call from Cancer Support Services and told them to send info and I would review. I received their donation request in the mail and did my research after which I tore up the mail and threw it in the garbage. This company does not appear to help anyone but the people at the top that are living high off the hog of off others.
