- Distressed daughter| 4 repliesMy mother passed away of pancreatic cancer in September and this lady named Erika said that she was looking for the person taking care of my mother's estate. ( My mother only had a few clothes and scrap-booking supplies.) Anyway I did not give her any information.
I am too broke to give money to scammers. May God have mercy on these thieves.- Caller: Ascention Point

- eLLe888-420-2510 >They called my recently late mom's second daughter in law who is remarried to another man !! and when she told me about it she said they also called the first daughter in law as well !! WOW !! Not even sure how they got those numbers either !! Not listed phone numbers...Called them back and they made no insistence of payment for a JC Penney account mom had for approx $1900 - told them to wait till dad passed and they can consider probate - otherwise nothing for them - surprised they didn't harass me more as others on here indicated. VERY Grateful though for those folks that put the FTC info up - appreciate that since I am dealing with other issues regarding my late mom's debts and probate/estate crap!

- Bob replies to Bill| 77 repliesI have received several messages from Ascension Point claiming to be the representative of the estate of a person who is unknown to me, and they were no relation of mine. The Ascension Point representatives leave cordial messages asking to call them back to resolve an issue with the estate of the deceased. A recent call was from Amber at 888-806-9073 ext. 4083. This is a completely bogus and appalling scam.
- JaneYes, I got the call from Erica Knudson; the caller ID said 888-420-2510 though she left the message with the number 888-806-9074 to call back. The call went into our answering machine. Same script, only this time about debts our deceased son had accrued. Thanks for the help on this website. We will get this letter out - cease and desist! (We are not executors of our deceased son's estate, nor co-signers for any of these debts.)
Let's see how effective writing them a letter turns out to be.- Caller: Ascension Point

- ShawnJust got off the phone "gerry." Looking for us to settle a debt that must have been sold from Citi Bank. Relative has just passed away three weeks ago. Credit card companies selling off debt to these sharks. They are all a bunch of scammers. If there is no estate, no other authorized users for the deceased credit, there is no obligation for you to pay off the debt- plain and simple. Know your rights! If they continue to harass you, pass along phone numbers of their local law enforcement agencies, and or addresses of cemetaries. (have a little fun with them at their expense)

- Texas Attorney replies to Bob| 63 repliesThey are a scam agency. Do not send them any money. You have ZERO liability for the debts of a deceased relative unless you are a co-signer or guarantor of the debt (and they are not collecting on co-signed debts, they are somehow obtaining names of relatives of deceased people and calling the surviving relatives [or those they believe to be relatives]). Ascension uses the tactic of trying to appeal to people to get them to voluntarily pay debts that are not the responsibility of the person they call. They have come about because of the poor economy. Collecting debts from people unable to pay their own debts is not as lucrative as it once was, so Ascension Point has tried this new tactic. I am currently working on finding out if they are judgment proof or not and what laws they are violating by contacting people about debts that the do not owe.
- judy replies to Texas Attorney| 9 repliesI just received a call last night re: my deceased husband's estate
- animal lover replies to Texas Attorney| 11 repliesMy mother's companion recently passed away and I had POA until his death. The legitimate
creditors' company name shows up on Caller ID. This past Saturday, a call came from this
"company"--no company name appeared and they wanted to speak with a family member of
the deceased.
I have learned to research ANYTHING on the website of which I am suspicious. Luckily, I found
this website warning that this was a scam. Thank goodness!!!! I might have returned the call
before but definitely will not. I was told when I obtained POA that I am NOT responsible for
the deceased's debts.
Thank you for looking into this matter for unsuspecting people. I hope you nail this sleezy
company!!! - animal lover replies to animal lover| 8 repliesI read your statement about this sleezy organization.
I do have a question---should I turn them into the NC Attorney General's office?
Please advise--they will not stop calling my elderly mother. - ascension point replies to Bill| 25 repliesAscension point is a normal collection agency. they collect debt from the estate of a deceased person, which is liable to pay the debt. They do not collect from family unless the family wishes to pay to honor a loved ones debts. Yes it happens. It is not a scam, it's just one of the dirty jobs someone has to do.
People would not be so upset about collection agencies if they took responsibility for themselves. I have been called by Ascension point and tons of others. No big deal. I know I made my debts and when I die my estate will be responsible to pay for them.

First you LIE and tell others that the deceased estate is responsible - then you tell them the STANDARD BS Line about PAY YOUR BILLS - THAT ARE NOT THEIR BILLS TO PAY.
Per the Federal Trade Commission Website - if there is NO MONEY in the ESTATE to pay the bills they DO NOT GET PAID and FAMILY is NOT RESPONSIBLE

Who is Responsible for a Deceased Relative's Debts?
If your relative leaves unpaid debts when he or she dies, do you have to pay?
According to the Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency, surviving relatives usually have no legal obligation to pay the debts of a family member who has died.
Generally, that person’s estate is responsible for paying his or her debts. But if there isn’t enough in the estate to cover the debts, they typically go unpaid.
After a relative dies, debt collectors may contact family members and ask them to pay their loved ones’ debts.
The rights of surviving relatives are covered by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which the FTC enforces. The FTC has developed a new consumer alert about this issue titled Paying the Debts of a Deceased Relative: Who Is Responsible? To learn more, go to http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt159.shtm.
The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish, visit the FTC’s online Complaint Assistant or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). The FTC enters complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to more than 1,500 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad. The FTC’s Web site provides free information on a variety of consumer topics.
