They are Ekos Research.  They call and don't say anything.  I called back and a recorded message says leave your number for a call back.  Whatever....

An automated phone survey (i.e. a "robocall") concerning the upcoming Canadian Federal Election (October 2008).

I only heard the final portion of the message (on my answering machine) and so I can't tell you what polling organization (if any) it was or if it's anywhere close to legit...

It was a woman's voice promising that you'd be entered in a contest to win $500 (if you participated in the survey). Then you were prompted to press a button for which party you'd vote for (1 = Bloc Quebecois, 2 = ...).

Lastly, I should mention that they dorked around with the information that comes up on Call Display:

    Caller Name = "1-888-688-0709"
    Caller Number = "1-888-688-0709"

(Both fields identical; first time I've seen a call come in like this...)

I received a call today and they are just a recording. Why is this going through the Do Not Call List?

The jerks called me too, they are exempt from the Do Not Call List for Canadians.  The Do Not Call List is a joke.  It don't work, instead your number can be sold to American Marketing Companies.

Well I did block the call and did it by removing the "1"
dial just the 10 numbers. Not well received for they ran at 8:40 pm
Certainly can't be election polling for this is the end on Jan. 09
number did register as mentioned in an above comment, I am on the "I OPT OUT" list as well so somehow they are getting through. I must admit that the call invasion have dropped substantialy ..so something is working.

Ekos can report this - I will vote for anybody who changes the Do Not Call to an opt-in system with no exceptions and get someone more qualified than CRTC to run it.

My call display shows things reversed (name is number), so yeah, they are messing with the caller id info:
    name as 1-888-688-0709
    phone number: unavailable

Got a call from them this evening, asking for somebody in my house between 17 and 30 doing university studies.  Claimed to be «The Government of Canada and EKOS».  I listened, the recording gave me a bunch of options (press 1 if aged between 17 and 30, press 2 if not, blah, blah, blah)  Then, after a while, they both thanked me (still a recording) and hung up.  I don't trust any calls like this, especially since I expected them to ask me for my SIN.

Name and number was 1-888-688-0709, another reason not to believe them.  There shouldn't be a reason to hide if you claim to be the Government of Canada, n'est-ce pas???!!!

The Do Not Call List is supposed to only cover telemarketing and sales call.

Unfortunately the list has to be purchased by the companies which means some telemarketing companies and scam artists now have a list of 100% good numbers instead of random digits.

Market Research is exempt from the national list but most of the good companies keep there own internal ones that they scrub there phone numbers against.

    Hope that helps
