Automated message, it took over 5 minutes for the message to stop and allow me to dial out. I would hang up, pick up to call out and couldn't because their message was tying up my line.

What that Rocco person said was correct: this is market research/public opinion polling and they are exempt from the do-not-call list. If you ask them to remove your number from their calling list, they should do so immediately.
I don't understand why people are so paranoid about companies like this calling them. So what if you don't know them? So what if they ask personal questions? They are not going to ask for anyone's SIN! The worst thing they might ask for is your annual income (they use a range, they don't ask for exact amounts) and what age group you fall into. Some do ask what year you were born. News flash: you don't have to answer any question you don't wish to. If it's an automated message, HANG THE FREAK UP if you don't want to participate.
And no, they're not trying to figure out where you live and how they can come and break into your house. I was called by a live interviewer from Ekos, not a machine, and the survey I did took less than ten minutes. I also participate in their online surveys sometimes.
I used to work for a major company like this one, and part of their format was to ask, at the very end of the survey, for the first three characters of the respondent's postal code. That, they instructed us to say, was so that we could group respondents by demographic area. But I think they gave or sold the answers to that and the income question to companies that create lists for telemarketers to use. So if you don't feel comfortable answering questions like this, you can refuse. And you should!
Finally, if you have an unlisted number, don't go into a paranoid fit when one of these companies reaches you. A lot of them use a computer program that randomizes phone numbers. Once they get a telephone exchange, they dial all the numbers in that exchange. Tell them to leave you alone, and that should be the end of it.
Above all, learn to refuse outright! And you don't have to be mean to live interviewers, just say you're not interested. Period. The recordings? Hang up on 'em, and go on your merry way! Or, screen all your calls and don't pick up, as someone else here suggested.
These people are not out to ruin your life. They're not trying to take your credit card number or mail you stuff you don't want. So ease up on them.

Your comments are futile. Reading most of the comments on this thread has contributed to me losing my faith in humanity. I do find it amusing however that many people put more effort into spamming inboxes or other annoyances than actually doing the survey they were called about in the first place.

Also, never picking up the phone is the worst idea. EKOS will just assume you are not home/on vacation and keep calling. Best idea is to do the survey, but if you lack the intelligence to express your opinions, or lack the intelligence to have opinions in the first place, just ask to be taken off their list.

Not giving away answers to questions that are none of YOUR BUSINESS for FREE so you can SELL THEM to your paying customers IS THE SMARTEST THING YOU CAN DO when a professional privacy invader like the clown who posted this drivels interrupts you on the phone.

It's right up there with blowing a LOUD WHISTLE in their ear. Ever hear that? It means STOP CALLING FOREVER.

You filthy scum deserve all the abuse you get and MORE. The only people who lack intelligence are the subhumans running the survey and THE MORONS WHO ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS.

If everybody told you where to shove your questions, we would all FINALLY be RID OF YOU.

They called here yesterday 4 times and everytime I answered, it was dead air then the click of them hanging up. No one said anything. I called the # back, was given the option to leave a message which I did and told them to stop calling here...so far today, no calls from Ekos research :)

I've been picking up the phone and not saying anything, after a couple of seconds, they will hang up. The problem is they've been calling me about once/twice a week for the last three weeks. Should I just answer it and then hang up? Will that stop them from calling my cell phone? Not sure how they have my number to begin with.

Rec'd call from this # yesterday - as always did NOT pick up "unknown name".  I am so sick & tired of the huge number of these "unknowns" that are out there.  The DNC list is a joke.  The Gov't or whoever needs to step up and take a much harder stand against allowing these types of calls.  Enough already - whatever happened to our right to privacy?

Called today to have name removed.

Call 1-800-388-2873 and ask for Marc Anderson -Call center supervisor

or if that doesn't work call EKOS enter company directory and type in the the letters for "smith" you'll get Jeff Smith. A PERSON!!!

Your number could have been from a directory or they also randomly generate 20% of the numbers randomly based on a working number.

My biggest complaint with this call is this was my cell phone which has limited access, there are only 3 people who have this number, and I pay for these stupid calls.....they should not be allowed to call cell phones.
And for those of you who were told they are exempt from the no call list that is true if they are a survey, but if you request to be put on their no call list they have to comply........

Its a market survey research company... the numbers are randomly generated by the computer that the researchers use and if they get through ie. not a dead line, the bosses make them keep calling over and over and over and over until you say "remove me from your calling list". I got scammed into working at a place doing the same thing for 2 weeks it was awful, they harass people, they make the employees harass people and get you in trouble if you dont harass people. They do it because companies or the government contracts them out to do surveys.
