A simple plan that works perfectly, with only a short learning curve:
1. Get "Caller ID" option on your phone line - it costs a few bucks, but it will give you peace of mind. 2. Get rid of all old phones without display screens - you can buy new ones for less than $20.00. 3. Don't answer ANY calls from 1-800 numbers - there are few, if any, legit ones. 4. Don't answer ANY calls from numbers you don't recognize. 5. Don't answer ANY "Unknown Caller" calls. 6. Instruct all members of your family in these rules - and enforce them!
This plan has worked for me for over 3 years so far, and I sleep like a baby. (BTW, I keep all my bills and credit cards up to date, so I know for sure that any 1-800 calls are from telemarketers, scammers, or fraudulent charities. I'm hardly rich, but I learned my lessons the hard way some time ago.)
They are calling our home in Texas, looking for a girl my husband DATED (not married) 23 years ago! I cannot believe this. 23 years ago! I don't know WHAT to do. It's really really upsetting! It's giving me real stress - how did they get to HIM??
I meant to include, he dated her in NY, we have lived in TX for 15 years, he dated her 23 years ago! We've been married for 22, and have never had any unpaid debt! I hsve been harrassed by a company in the past for a debt they could give me no particulars on. (my position is the debt has been paid off) After recieving many harassing calls most of which originated offshore I was informed one day that the call was being recorded for training purposes. I told the man on the phone if he wanted to record me for training purposes then he would have to pay me... call me back on an unrecorded line and we will discuss the pay schedule for the recording. Now they call once a month on a with a recorded message, as if I have time to listen to it. I have tried to contact them but before I get to talk to a person the recording warning comes on and I hang up.
BTW here in Canada there is a seven year statute of limitations on any bill except to government. That seven years starts the date of your last payment. If someone calls you looking for a twenty year old debt just tell them that you have no debt and the next call will be considered harassment and the RCMP fraud squad will be notified. Dont forget to thank them for their time they hate that.
global collections is just another name these scam artists are using. the real global collections isn't who is harrasing you. i've been getting calls for months from Numbers from all over the united states, all saying that i have received an online cash advance from US cash advance. they claim to be Working with various law firms or some times they say stupid things like they are the states general attorney and even claim to be with the FBI. i look up the real law firm or organization and inform them about these Scammers ruining their organizations name and then i go to the FBI's web site and file a complaint. the global collections that contacted me claims to be in new work this time, but in reality, these guys are using a computer program to trick your caller id or so on and so forth. It seems these people are all from india and they always give very american names like john smith, mike johnson and this one is funny, john doe! call 1-800-Equifax to report that they have your social security number and inform your bank. this is a growing form of organized crime. don't give them any money. we can't let these losers win!
one More thing, someone in an earlier post said get caller ID and don't answer 1-800 Numbers, these Scammers rarely call from 1-800 numbers and they use a computer program to change what number comes up, yesterday i got called from 1-000-0000 and then from 1-947-38. Duh obviously those are NOT real numbers. caller ID won't Do much good. get a call back number from someone that you talk to and report them and info to the FBI. we played along with a few of these guys and were able to get a fax number, Email address, and i even told one that i was going to be in the state they were in and i could go pay him cash, i got his address out of that one. also no law firm or collections agency will accept cash. also a red flag!

Something should be done about these people. Their methods are illegal.

It sounds very unprofessional. They may be legit but their total for what I owe is completly different then what it says on my collections. This total was actually more. They offered me a so called "deal" to get rid of it but I would have give them my banking information over the phone. I offered to just mail them the money, not cash of course but a cheque or some sort of money order but they were unable to give me their information. They asked me why I would think they would scam me and sacrafise their good repetation and I said for money obviously. I tried to look up the site in the previous comment to email them but it no longer exists. This collections was FRAUD in the first place and do not deserved to pay for it. I was under age at the time so doesn't that make any contract not valid? Everything was paid off on this account so Im not sure why they are saying I owe them money. They seem to know nothing other than what I have already told them. I did not give out any SIN number or sign anything so if you guys are reading this please stop harassing me. They refuse to except payments so sucks to be them! How would I have any proof that these things are related? If you are legit you better do a better job at confirming it for me or you are getting nothing. I will give the money to a lawyer to pay it and I'm getting a receipt.

I work myself as agent in a good collection company..what you explain it is not very clear. The agent have the opportunity to make your bill with a lower amount, you know why...because the collection company deal whith this customer and if that customer request our service, without hautority by law that thay have it cost them money...you follow...so instead dealing with you for 3 months for 50,00 a month why are allowed to offer you a seatlemen offer to close more rapidly your count if you collaborate...im just curious with wich agence you did not understant what he tried to make you understand...by the way you had the chance before to make arrangments directly with the person that you how the money,,,,,did you do something....no...this is why today you are in this situation, and in are job, we know that so why today, i should give you again an other chance,,,,
To:'loll dont worry' The reason people don't take collection folks like yourself seriously, is that most of the time they are rude, obnoxious, and outright morons. Your attempt at justifying this in your posting is amusing at best, and pathetic in that you have no command of the English language and no writing skills at all. Please crawl back into your hole... Oh, I almost forgot. Have a nice day!
Who are you talking about, the people calling Ang or ChoicePoint? In either case neither is the government. The people harassing Ang are part of a well known criminal scam preying on anyone who ever loaded personal information on a payday loan website---just another reason to stay away from those vultures. Choice Point is definitely not the government. I've been familiar with them for years and they are a private corporation where they don't worry too much about the morality of how they make a living. They do however buy a lot of info from state and local public records.
Just had a call from this company trying to get me to pay a debt I had 6 years ago that was paid in full 6 YEARS AGO. The young man from this company was very rude and ignorant. He was trying to verify my information; I gave him my postal code but then thought now way this is wrong so I just hung up.
