Said his name was Ben Johnson. Said for my attorney or me to return call to his direct line at 2137845745. Fits the profile of the other complaints. How can we get this stopped?

There was more but allot of similar things to what others are saying. Now when they call, the # on the caller ID does not come up. They are hiding there number and just says incoming call. Has this happen with anyone else.

- Annoyed in NY replies to Joe| 2 repliesI just had this exact same thing happen to me I live NYS they had the same personal information about me I am calling the F.B.I. this situation is very scary.
- DCI too started to get calls starting on Monday from someone named Roderick Smith. They called me at work and on my cell phone repeatedly, probably 50 times a day. When I tried calling back to the number they left it would ring five times and say please check the number and dial again. I finally got a hold of someone yesterday and they told me that I am being charged with three felony counts which included check fraud, intentional deception and something else. Everytime I would ask a question the guy would talk over me and never answer what I had asked him. Then I told him I was going to the police because if I was really charged with something they would have a record of it. The guy then hung up on me. When I went to the police station they had no charges pending for me. He told me I would have been served no one would call and say you can pay your way out of these charges. The police officer called the company and they would not tell him what I was supposedly being charged with it. Since then they have not called me. I did change my cell phone number, but they did not try calling me at work at all.
These people are crazy and must think we are stupid. - frustrated in texasthese people operate under many different names and phone numbers and supposed business names. there are probably a thousand entries for different phone numbers on this site alone. it is a big scam. i have read under other phone numbers listed on this site that they somehow (illegally) get infor from payday loan sites, and then use it to extort money from people who are too scared not to pay. ( i was one of them to the tune of over 10,000). they violate every rule of the fdcpa. look up the rules that bill collectors are supposed to follow. it is illegal for them to tell you that you will be arrested for owing money. you can't be arrested in this country because of debt. do not give them any information. if you have given them your credit card or banking info. cancel everything!! they will go in and make debits to your acct. without your permission. everytime they call you should report them to the ftc, and states atty general office, as well as the fbi, and possibly homeland security. from what i have been reading, they are all very interested in what these people are up to. again, do not give them anything. i have even stopped answering their calls and deleting their voice mails without even listening to them. of course they still call a million times a day, but at least i don't have to talk to them.
- Glenn| 2 repliesPretty much the same story here. I recieved a call yesterday from a very rude man with a thick indian accent. He said he was calling from the "Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loan Association" which is based out of San Diego, CA. He informed me that charges were being pressed against me for a loan I did not repay from March of 2008. When I (very calmly) informed the man that I made no loan in 2008, he started yelling at me that I was a money launderer and I would be arrested. He knew my whole social security number and my mailing address. When I asked him some details about this federal agency that he worked for he was not calling to answer questions, he was calling to ask questions. When I again asked about this agency, he screamed that he was a federal employee and that I would be arrested. Very scary stuff. I called the Clerk of Courts and the Better Buisness Bureau in San Diego and they informed me that no such company exsists. I called the Federat Trade Comission and when I told them the story they said this is a national problem and that they were investigating. I also contacted the FBI, and they put out an alert. This needs to be stopped.

https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-904-425-9141:
It's a scam, and all their threats are false and illegal. The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal consumers' money.
Here are a few news reports and government advisories warning consumers about this scam:

West Virginia Attorney General: http://www.wvago.gov/internetloanscam.cfm

This is a very active group of scammers, many of whom are calling from India (and probably other countries) and are in cahoots with a group of American pay day loan scammers. They attempt to extort money from consumers with a myriad of false and illegal threats, and alternately pose as debt collectors, federal and state law enforcement officers, lawyers and bankers. Their trademark is to use meaningless legalese gobbylgook phrases like "We are downloading warrants against you" or "We are filing an affidavit against you." Another trademark phrase is to threaten the consumer with something like this ridiculous phrase: "If you don't pay then only God can help you."
Typical of many financial scams of this variety, they usually demand payment via Western Union or MoneyGram or credit card. They use any number of phony names such as US National Bank, Federal Investigation Bureau, US Legal Investigation Bureau, Christian Nicholas & Associates, US Federal Bank, Sonic Bank, Hopkins Law Office, CashNet, United Legal Processing, Morgan Associates, United Pay Services, National Processing, White Collar Crime Unit and many more. These criminals also use many phone numbers from many area codes; they're probably using caller-id spoofing software and/or VoIP to disguise their real location.
The main thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, or demanding your lawyer's name so they can sue you, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) has the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) And since these foreign dirtbags routinely impersonate law enforcement, it's also important to remember that American law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection. (Debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)
A consumer posting a complaint about these same scammers at https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-718-831-7157 notes that 718-831-7157 is associated with an India-based "outsourcing" telephone bank. Though a reverse search on WhitePages.com shows that 718-831-7157 is an unlisted land line in New York City, information on Debtbuyers.Com shows that that number is used by India-based Intellisourze. (Source: http://www.debtbuyers.com/debtbuyers.asp ) My guess is that it's a VoIP phone number.
This is another piece of the puzzle that fits in perfectly with other information about this scam. There are some reports on 800Notes that have suggested that the crooks behind this offshore scam are also the crooks behind the notorious Bass/Ellis Crosby & Assoc./States Predisposition scams in Florida and Georgia. The interesting thing is that the number of complaints on here about the US National Bank/US Legal Investigation/Federal Investigation scam skyrocketed *after* April 7, 2008 when Florida obtained a $1.3 million judgment against Ted Ellis Crosby, shutdown his operations and barred him from ever conducting debt collections in Florida (
http://myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/newsrel ... 5257424005858A6 ) There's certainly a good chance that the crooks placing these calls from India are doing so on behalf of the American crooks behind the Crosby/Bass/States Predisposition scams.

Though scam calls from these crooks have been going on long before May 8, the frequency of complaints about these calls increased considerably after Crosby was shut down in early April.
This is conjecture, but appearances suggest that Crosby and company were originally running a two-pronged payday loan scam operation -- with some calls being made from Jacksonville, Florida and other calls being made from a phone bank in India (and possibly other countries); then, after the Florida Attorney General shut down the Crosby scams in Florida, the Crosby crooks transferred most of their scam efforts to the India phone bank.
If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org
5) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a *small* sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

I told my attorney about everything this "attorney" said and my attorney said it must be a scam. For one, they never pointed out the name of the firm they work with; only that I am being sued by the Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans. They refused to tell me the name of the loan company I supposedly got the loan from and said that if I don't pay $900 today I'll have to pay about $4000 in the end (attorney fees, etc). According to my attorney, they legally have to give more time to pay. In other words, if it were legit, they would have had to call me weeks ago if today was the deadline. One thing I and my attorney noticed is that, when this "attorney" asked if I still worked at the job on file, I said no. They did not then ask where I work now, which is odd. Basically, my attorney pointed out everything that is wrong with this call and told me to ignore it unless I actually do receive paperwork. Oh, and I call one of my attorneys DAD. My dad is an attorney, this just isn't his specialty. I am using my other attorney (who gave me the info) if this goes anywhere. But obviously he knows something. I have been scammed before from a new york/canadian based company about 3 years ago. I did report it to the ftc, local authorities, etc. I was out almost $1,000.00. As unfortunate as it was, it was a learning lesson. Now, the laws have changed about companies being allowed to have your cell phone numbers. With that, a new scam, great! Thankfully I am in a much better financial position. I do not owe anyone right now, so when I started getting phone calls from (408) 215 3856, (813) 283 4343 ext. 1085, and (312) 962 5282 I knew it was a scam. They give such names as 'donna Jetson,' I believe that truly came from a cartoon. I also know that debt collection companies cannot threaten that you will be arrested, which they did. The accents they have can be intimidating, they speak slowly, etc. I am not sure from what country they are calling. Yes, the area codes are from florida, illinois, etc. Please don't be fooled folks, these people are not physically here in the U.S. What I learned from the other scam I was involved in three years ago was that although the phone number was affiliated with a New York address, when the police in New York went to the location it was an abandoned building.
Obviously, there were no people or phones in that bulding. The fact of the matter is, somehow, these people are calling from different countries but are able to access U.S. phone numbers. Think about it, with today's technology anything is possible. Where do we place the blame? I don't really know, unfortunately the law that allowed anyone to have our phone numbers was a serious mistake. I wish someone would have had the insight at the time to prevent this, but it is too late now. What I am concerned about now is, is this scam funding terrorism? Does that seem too off the wall to pose the question? I don't think it is because the reality is that these people have the ability to get phone numbers attached to addresses that are bad addresses all while sitting in another country. So how do you stop that from happening? Well, you really can't. When I was scammed a few years ago the people were finally traced back to canada. That's where the investigation halts. The U.S has a good relationship with Canada, but what U.S. authorities will pursue and Canadian authorities will pursue at least at that time was drastically different. Well, if these people are hiding in such safe havens as Pakistan, India, or wherever they are the U.S. authorites have no authority in these places and that is obvious. What I want to know is are American's funding terrorism? I think it is quite possible and that is terrifying!

They call me numerous times of the day. Even as late as 12:00am. When I answer I am greeted by a guy who sounds Arabian or Pakistanian, or something (very heavy accent) stating his name is Eric Smith. I laugh and ask what his real name is. He then tells me that he is a legal officer and I am in serious trouble at this point. I ask him what the debt is for and he tells me to hold on while he transfers me to a "senior legal officer". I am then transfered to a guy named Lennie who states that I defaulted on a payday loan. (Really funny because I have never taken out a payday loan, nor does my credit report reflect any such thing) I asked him who he works for and he states "The National Legal Department". I laugh every time. He tells me it's not funny and that he is a legal officer. I ask if he is a legal officer of the law. He states he is. I then ask for his badge# and he states that he will not provide that information as it is illegal. Again I laugh. He tells me that I can laugh all I want. He states that he will be sending a legal officer to my home to pick me up for a court hearing. I then ask where the hearing is and he just tells me I'll find out tomorrow. Again I laugh. I tell him that I work for a collections company and what he is doing is ILLEGAL. I then tell him that I have just called the authorities and an officer is on his way to file for harrassment. He then tells me to hold on. I start to talk and he asks me to please hold on while his atty informs him of information. He comes back on the phone and states I am now speaking with Frank Jackson. I again laugh and ask for his real name. He tells me that this is not a laughing matter and I will be going to jail along with my family and my brother's kids will be going to foster homes. Once my family was brought into the matter (especially my niece and nephew) I became irate and told him he can pick me up now if he has the balls. He told me he'll be right there. The officer shows up by this time and when I tell the guy on the other line I want him to talk to the officer who just showed up he hangs up. I tried to call him back and they just hang up the phone. These people are a serious SCAM and please do not give them any of your personal information and please please please do not pay them anything. Report them as soon as you get the call.

Attorney General Darrell McGraw took the extraordinary step today of warning the public about a band of scam artists making threats to consumers who allegedly obtained Internet payday loans in West Virginia and across the nation. The consumers they threaten never obtained a loan at all or paid it off years ago.
Internet payday loans are short-term loans or cash advances, usually for 14 days, made over the Internet via interactive web sites and secured by an agreement authorizing debits of the loan and all fees owed from the consumer’s checking account. These loans typically charge interest rates ranging from 600-800 APR and are unlawful in West Virginia.
The scam artists, who speak English with a foreign accent, call themselves “U.S. National Bank,” “Federal Investigation Bureau,” “United Legal Processing” and numerous other phony names. They refuse to disclose real names and addresses and are believed to be operating “off the grid” from homes, automobiles, or from off shore locations or foreign countries, including India. Since the scammers have kept themselves purposely well hidden, thus far no law enforcement agencies have succeeded in locating or shutting them down.
The scammers typically pose as law enforcement officers, investigators, lawyers, and bankers and threaten consumers that they will be arrested for “bank fraud” or other fictitious crimes unless money is wired immediately. They simultaneously scare and confuse consumers by using meaningless legalese gobbledygook phrases such as, “We are downloading warrants against you” or “We are filing an affidavit against you.” Consumers who don’t immediately fall for the scam are warned, “Only God can help you now.”
The scammers almost always call consumers at work several times a day, and tell their supervisors, “Your employee has committed fraud and is about to be arrested.” Such threats have proven unsettling even to the most savvy consumers and employers who suspect the calls are fraudulent.
Attorney General McGraw stated, “Ordinarily my office protects consumers from fraudulent activities by seeking injunctions in court. But legal action cannot be taken until the scam artists can be located. Even then, it is unlikely that the persons behind the fraudulent calls and extortionist threats would obey a court order. In this case, the consumer’s best defense is to be armed with the knowledge of the scam so that all demands for money can be resisted, despite the false but scarey threats of arrest.”
McGraw added, “Because the fraudsters make a special point of calling consumers repeatedly at work, employers must understand that the consumers are innocent victims of a criminal enterprise and cannot stop the calls from coming. I also wish to assure the citizens of West Virginia that my office will continue to do everything possible to locate and shut down the outlaw debt collectors.”
More information about this fraudulent debt collection scheme is available at the Attorney General’s website, www.wvago.gov/internetloanscam. Any consumers who have been threatened by these persons or wish to file a complaint about another consumer matter may do so by calling the Consumer Protection Hot Line, 1-800-368-8808, or by obtaining a complaint form from the Attorney General’s web site.

1. The U.S.
2. Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3. File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4. File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5. File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com

Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
• Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
• Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
• File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
• File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you. - lamet replies to KendraIt really helps if you read previous postings that have ALL the government agencies that you need to report them to - NOT JUST THE FBI
