After reading your comment, we did some checking into it. You did have an interesting point. We called up our local phone company and asked them if we are allowed to record a known IRS scam in our state. For phone scams like that you ARE allowed to record the conversation. We did some online investigation and listened to actual phone call recordings in incidents like this one that my friend had. We proved that it was an IRS scam and, legally, for those types of phone calls you are ALLOWED to record the conversation. We even called the real IRS and the police and they too said it was no problem. You can legally do it if you know that it is actually a IRS phone call scam.

he was trying to sell me gay porn and hung up when I said I was a Christian and not interested in that kinda horrible stuff. Isn't that against the law to try and sell porno on the phone?

Caller stating that I had committed tax fraud and that there was a warrant for me.I told him that he was being reported a silence and then he hung up

Rang once. No message. I blocked this number.

caller says his name is Lee Jones (obviously not) from the treasury dept and my taxes were filed incorrectly and I have large discrepancy.  says I was mailed two notices which went unanswered.  I just asked questions until I was fed up knowing all along its a scam.  He didn't like it when I told him it was a scam so he hung up.

I just got a call from Simon Jackson (Investigation Officer for the IRS) Said he had been trying to contact me and has sent several letters to my old home address (he was able to give the address).  He gave me a case number (00 425 634 892) and said I owed $2,947.00. He told me that my CPA couldn't handel the case and that I needed to hire a lawyer.  When I started asking questions, he told me not to get smart and that this was a serious matter.  He also said he was having a warrant issued for my arrest and asked if I was at my home address, that I needed to stay there for two hours since they were having the US marshals come get me.  The other weird thing is that he had my Mom's name too and said she was on the claim too.

Calls me multiple times and threatened to kill me. Told me to come out of  my home so he can take my life.

Call from officer Melvin Johnson at 202-622-3000 USDept of Treasury, asking me to call 209-855-5107 regarding declaration. The 202 number is the Dept of Treasury, but the number to call seems a scam reported number. In any case the Treasury would send a letter before calling a cell phone number!

Amy that was the same case number he gave me. Also told me not to be smart. I set him up. I asked him if there was anything I could do at this point and he told me that I could speak with a restitution officer. I hung up after that.

Got the same call from 2026223000 and the caller id said unknown.  The caller must be using the same script as my call sounded the same as these previous posts.  If anyone was "in trouble" with the IRS don't you think they would send out a certified letter to the person in trouble?  Scam

This is a foreigner that is claiming I am in trouble with the irs regarding my taxes.  .  The caller was Officer Melvin Johnson and his call back number 209-622-5107, from the Legal affair dept with the IRS.  What ever happened to the governments do not call list?

Same SCAM as the others have noted.  Officer "Chris Walker" stating I owe back taxes after an audit of my taxes...stated I had refused to answer previous letters from the IRS...stated that the local authorities would arrest me in the next 24 hours.  Same case number as previously mentioned 0004 256 34892.  Got lippy when I asked him to send me an email immediately with support for his claim.  This is when he threatened to send the local authorities.  I told him that I'd be home waiting for their arrival (ha), and he hung up.

6/3/2016 Rec'd a call (voice mail message) from this #, caller (accented voice) ID'd himself as "Officer Johnson from the Treasury Department". I was told that it was re: "your tax evasion issue" and that it "would be in ... best interest to get a lawyer."  I was also given the number 995-594-4088 as a call back number.  This number has appeared on my Caller ID as a call origin (5/3/2016).

Must be at it again.  We just received the call.  Our guy was Robert Lucas.  Same case number.  Scared my husband to death.  He told the guy he was going to find his tax return and call the local IRS office to go pay.  The guy said he was just going to have him arrested and hung up.

There are numerous telephone and email scams in which individuals claim to be employees of the Treasury Department. These scammers often state that they are from the “Department of Legal Affairs,” offer grant money in exchange for you wiring a small payment, or threaten to arrest you within a short period of time unless payment is made. Do not provide personal information or payment to these individuals.  Their actions are crimes under Titles 18 and 31 of the United States Code, and the Treasury Office of Inspector General is working to stop them.

If they claim to be from Treasury, report  it to OIGCounsel@oig.treas.gov with a description.  If it was a phone contact, include:
the exact date and time that you received the call(s)
the phone number of the caller
the geographic location and time zone where you received the call
a description of the communication.

If they claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or it is about taxes, report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at:

Treasury fraud spoof number 202 622 3000, CB: 209 855 5098.

Indian accent. Said he was from the US Department of Treasury. When I said, "Oh, really?" (suspecting a scam, especially with the accent), he said "Yes, really." I said "Ok, go ahead." He didn't answer, and apparently hung up. I've been paying income taxes for 47 years. IRS, nor the Department of Treasury, always deals my mail, not by telephone. I'm sure they speak clearer English, too, not with a non-US accent. I think he figured out I knew it was a scam from the get go. For everyone's information, my telephone showed the name "DEPT OF TREASURY 1-202-622-3000," which is actually a correct area code for Washington, D.C., but obviously "spoofed."
