I recently inquired about a vacation rental in NYC that stated the apartment had "Great views from this upper floor of a luxury 40 story hi-rise." and "On the 4th floor of a walk-up building" so I found that along with the too cheap rate of $100/nt to be confusing.  (http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/vac/1525364466.html)
For clarification I asked the person listing the partment to phone me. The response to my inquiry was by email from someone (Kate Lent)whose English was very questionable even though their ad was written in perfect English.  Kate also said she couldn't get through to my phone but I may call her at 206-399-0186.  It all sounded too suspicious so I Googled the name Kate Lent and the number she supplied and found these warnings about a scam.  "Kate" uses this e-mail address:

I attempted to rent a vacation rental in Tampa Bay Florida from a craiglist posting.  After receiving 2 e-mails from a woman named Kate Lent I was asked to sign a rental agreement and send $ for a deposit via western union.  She listed a man named richard Buerkle as the owner of this rental condo who the money should be sent to.  This is a scam.  After numerous followup questions she failed to respond.  Thankfully I never sent any money.  The below is the link in craigslist.  Her phone number is 206-399-0186 and the e-mail address used is katelen01@gmail.com

The phone number I was given was 2063390186 as well. Expensive lessen learned. Hopefully I can recover some of the money from Paypal.  I should have went with my gut. :-(

'Dea Lazo' is her new name. dealazo@gmail.com  She has different apartment ads on Craigslist.
    - we agreed on price for an LA apartment, then she sent me a rental agreement and a colour image of a California Drivers License for Dea Lazo.
    - the rental agreement stated the owner of the apartment was "Lawrence Schollenberger" (no legally appointed agent needs or should name the owner)
    - the rental agreement did not include an address or contact info for the agent
    - the rental agreement required a drivers license or passport #.
    - the rental agreement did not include an apartment number, only the street address

    - her Craigslist ad subject line included "Vacation Professionals" with a triangle on either side of the text.  This text & format is also used by a legitimate Better Business Bureau vacation rental business in LA.  I called them and they do not recognize the name "Dea Lazo"
    - the Craigslist ad subject line said "Apartment". I looked up the address on Google Map and with street view it was clear it was an apartment building.  I searched the internet for the address and found other, seemingly very legitimate ads for other apartments in the building and compared their exteriors to the google exterior to ensure I had the right place.
    - It was a 1920's 2-story building.  She claimed the apartment had a private glass elevator and sub-terranean parking, but none of the other apartments mention an elevator in the building or underground parking & instead mentioned ground-level outdoor gated parking which is visible in Google satellite view.
    - Her ad claimed there was a rooftop deck.  It is clear from Google satellite view that there was none.
    - I communicated with other owners of rental apartments in the building.

I confronted her by email and she insisted it was a private residence and there was no apartment number to be given.

She emailed several times wanting the completed agreement, and I asked for a phone number to ask her questions.  She responded that she wanted my number and would call me.  I refused. She eventually sent a NY cell number that did not work (when I tried it I used an untraceable Skype number): 3153085329

    Don't do it, folks!

ad for a ski/ski out condo in breckenridge, co on craigslist.  206-339-0186 was the number they gave me to call after i asked four times, but it always just goes to a message machine/fax, when it looks too good to be true, it usually is.  they wanted money sent western union or paypal and no owner info, but the agents email said Jeffrey Milestone and the rental contract was Bette Lamb.

I was trying to rent a condo in Breck for $100. Too good to be true. He wanted me to wire transfer due to the owner in Texas being a victim of scams. He had a perfectly good posting but his emails with me were with significant broken english. I asked for the number and he gave the same number as all the postings below. Needless to say, we did not wire transfer!

responded to a craigslist ad for a condo in miami beach - dea lazo as agent for owner Lawrence Schollenberger.  Was sending emails to a louis love, was even provided a copy of a Missouri driver's license.  Wanted me to WESTERN UNION money (red flag right there) - I attempted to verify Lawrence Schollenberger's ownership before sending a wire -- his name did not appear in the public records of miami-dade county, nor on the tax collector website, nor on the property appraiser website.  The photos of the living room showed some buildings through the front window... used google maps to view the address given -- no such buildings were on the street.

When I asked for additional information regarding proof of ownership before wiring funds, all communications ceased.

Watch out for Dea Lazo (same story as above) an apartment in LA, sounds good at first, then the emails have broken English, then the drivers license etc. I have not got to the part where she will request a wire transfer but BEWARE of paying anything online.

I was scammed by this person too! I replied to an ad on Craigslist for a condo rental in HI, I should have trusted my gut on this one. Briliant Sparman used email address brietty10@gmail.com  and I knew she was scamming me when she started getting defensive the more questions I asked. My boyfriend said to just go ahead with it and I transfered $325.00 thru paypal to a roger benscoter. She emailed me back asking if I 'red-flagged' the payment and I knew I got ripped off once that happened. She continued talking to me and when I asked for a reciept she said she would get it to me and then she stopped replying to all my emails. I put a dispute in with paypal today and they immediately bumped it to a claim. Paypal must be aware of the history with this guy and are monitoring his account which would explain why they are now using money-wires like moneygram and asking for more personal info. Sadly my one year anniversary will now probably not be spent in HI thanks to these scammers. Hopefully we can get legal action against these guys.
