I got the same response from a Craigslist ad. Glad I found this thread. I am ignoring it.

    Hello,

This is Jen thanks for getting back to me i want to buy this but the only way i can pay you is via a Bank Certified Check that i would mail to you using the FedEx overnight delivery,

To make sure that everything goes smoothly i would wait for the check to clear before the pickup is done, I would be responsible for the pickup and it would be done by the movers and their payment would be included in the check i mail to you and this is all due to my disability (am deaf) and it makes it hard for me deal with this and it makes the transaction better and quicker.

I know you were not expecting this and I would have loved to come for the viewing but i cant I really want it and am offering an extra $50 for you to delete the posting to show i want it as i am just settling into my new house i want good deals to furnish the apartment i stay in

if you are okay with this please send me pictures and get back to me with the following

    Your Full name

Your Physical address (as FedEx does not deliver to P.oboxes)

    I await your response .

    Thank you and stay blessed

I didn't get the phone number in email to me, but wording was almost identical. I had a four-piece sectional for sale under Craigslist, and he/she responded to ad in under an hour.

    Hello,
I’m really interested in purchasing your listed furniture . let me know how much your last price is and if possible the reason you are selling and the condition of the item. When can i come to check it?, Kindly get back to me if you still have the item. I'm speech disabled though,You can just reply this email, I'm aways with my computer. thanks, write back
    ---------------

At first I didn't really think this was a scam. I replied that it was in exc condition and they could come check it out.

Two days later, I get 2nd email:

    From mamorongaldo@aol.com
    June 9, 2011 3:19pm

Hello, thanks for your reply, but am sorry i will not be able to come over for checkup due to my mother just concluded surgery of cancer,i will be going to stay with her for a least a month, i really love to buy this item, based on the condition of the item  you gave me. i was suppose to take a 5 days trip to your town officially and that got changed. My pay check will be coming in nextweek, so am willing to issue you a certified bank check including the movers fund.i am going to responsible for pickup so my mover will come over for pickup in order not to stress you.i will need a name and address to write out the check, probably P.O.Box.sorry i reply late, let me know as soon as you get this message, thanks write back

    -----------------
    I responded:

    Hello,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

I believe you should come and look at sectional sofa before you purchase. I want you to be completely
happy with transaction. Yesterday, a nice lady came by to buy sofa for her mother, but she felt that
sofa seat was too low (16"). Her mother has bad knees and requires a specialized "lift chair" to get up.
If she purchased sectional sofa without first looking at it, she would have made a bad mistake. She
    would have been very sad.

I do not want you to be sad. You seem like a very good person in your community. I bet your family
members look up to you for wisdom and honesty. I wish I had a family member like you.

The 4-piece sectional included sofa bed + ottoman, all of which probably weighs at least 500 pounds. I
imagine the sofa bed weighs 275 pounds alone. The shipping on this sectional would be very
expensive, more than what it is worth.

There are a lot of crazy people responding to ads on Craigslist. I only wish more people were nice like
    you.

    Take care.

Hello thank you very much for your concern, god will surely bless you abundantly in all your endeavours. sincerely as it is now, i am moving to newyork tommorow morning, so there i no way i can come over to check the sofa, if its in good condition as you stated or if its not that good you can just let me know, i believe in you. i just want to buy it unseen now based on your comment on the item, you dont have to worry about the movers, i will handle that. thanks, if its ok with you, you can send the name and address to write out the check

I'm tempted to respond to their latest email, just to see how far scammer will let this go until he/she gives up, or realizes I know they are a scammer.

    Should I respond:
    (1) that I'm on welfare and don't have a bank account
    (2) that the people who own sectional are now home and I have to wait until morning in order to break in
        and get it.
    (3) that I accidentally burnt both my prosthetic leg and sofa after I dropped my crack pipe
    (4) that I'm afraid to move sofa because I don't want to disturb the rat and her babies
    (5) that I'm also moving to New York and they could meet me somewhere and pay me then

    Any suggestions....???

I just received a bizarre craigslist response (and pretty much identical to what I am reading here) for my ikea bureau. I immediately thought it was odd but couldn't find any information on the name or email address until I just typed in 'Jennifer Garcia Scam' and found you guys!! It's so bizarre! Would a check actually arrive? I just emailed them that I knew it was a scam and wanted to be removed from their list (I fell for sending my mailing address as her reasoning was that she was disabled and unable to meet me at my home). When I wrote her about using PayPal, she responded "I can pay via check only so get  back to me with the requested information" which seemed a little curt.

How are they actually benefiting from this process of finding addresses? Isn't there a phone book full of them??

So they do give checks?  What if I go to the bank to claim it?  What happens?

    Here's how the scam works
    1)  They send you a check for the purchace price plus an amount to be forwarded to a 3rd party.  They'll give you some reason for the extra money.
    2)  You deposit the check in your account
    3)  You wire the extra to the 3rd party, just like they told you to.
At this point the money you sent is gone.  It can't be recovered.
    4)  Several weeks later your bank contacts you.  The check you deposited in step 1 has bounced.  You have to pay your bank the full amount plus a fee for the bounced check.
    5)  The person who sent you the check can't be found.  The 3rd party you sent part of the money to can't be found.  You have been scammed for the amount you sent to the 3rd party.

Same thing from deaf Kelsey Louise. Has anyone gotten $ or have movers ever shown up? Who do you report this to?

If the check came by mail and you kept the envelope you can report it to the postal inspectors at the post office.

Report it to CraigsList so they can block her.

You can tell your local police.  They'll take a report.  But they are too busy with other stuff to do much more.

Western Union already knows about it.  If you talk about it in front of them they'll tell you about the scam and try to talk you out of sending the money.

Do NOT deposit the check.  You can destroy it or you can take it to the post office and report her for fraud.

I would shred the check and mix it with used cat litter.  I have plenty of that stuff on hand.

I too got similar message from John Alan. I did not believe it but replied back with my phone number. This is what he replied:

Calling you is not a quandary but I can’t at least for now as I am currently on duty on the gulf of Mexico, I work with McMoRan Exploration it's a Oil and Gas Rig Operator on the gulf, it's a two weeks on two weeks off work routine, I use my other two weeks to work on other jobs; I sometimes activate my incoming calls late at night; all I do with my blackberry is surfing the net which of course include sending and receiving mails, using a personal phone is highly prohibited, we do have a general line for family calls and in cases of emergencies, however, I will call you when I can. Just to clear up a couple of things, you are not going to be responsible for the shipment, what I said however was that the moving fee will be included with your payment and will in no way affect your 250bucks plus the $20. The movers will only contact you and come for the pickup at your location after you have your payment and at your preferable time. Lemme know if you still wish to proceed.

    John.

    Sent from my iPad

I got three mails from this person and the signature in all mails had different "Sent from..". It was once "Sent from BlackBerry", the "Ipad"and "HTC"!
