- Jim D| 1 replyGC Services collects unpaid AMEX balances. They will call neighbors and family members of the debtor, in an effort to make contact. Generally the debtor is avoiding taking the calls (whether for lack of money, or lack of any desire, to pay the bill), so GC tries to get through to them via other people. I've dealt with them (had an unpaid balance) and they're actually pretty understanding - they try to set up a payment schedule that's workable. I was pretty much broke, and barely making rent, and they agreed to "try again later" when I might be in better financial shape. They might be less friendly if they think you have the money but are just being a deadbeat, but if you haven't got the resources they're realistic about not being able to "get blood from a turnip".

- GateKeeper replies to Jim DHmmm,. You were clever in your shillery, but...nope.
I'm reading where people say they were E-MAILED, and CALLED, but no one has mentioned the DEBT VALIDATION.
All debt collectors are required by law to send you a DEBT VALIDATION. This is sent through the USPS ONLY (email, text, faxes, carrier pigeons, smoke signals...none of those count) and state when you incurred the debt, to whom you owe the original debt, and how to proceed should you not recognize the amount.
This must be sent within 5 days of the first time the company attempts to contact you.
REAL DEBT COLLECTORS SEND THIS. Scammers do not.
A few other things to know-
-You cannot be arrested for ordinary debt in the United States.
-Process servers do not call in advance. They only get paid if they deliver you papers the court (not a private company) has ordered be delivered, and if you flee, they don't get paid. Therefore, they do not call ahead of their arrival.
-Likewise, officers do not call you to tell you they will be arresting you. Why would they?

This link contains all the rules debt collectors must follow, and includes links where you can report criminals who choose not to follow the law. - BigAYou need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation, cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter. You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to. Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment. If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.

Please note: Regarding the collection of student loans, the collection agency wants to convince you that you need to pay $200 or more per month. The reason is simple-they make a ton more money that way. If they get you to pay that they make 16% of the TOTAL loan amount. If you pay less they only get 16% of what you pay every month.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- IrritatedMessage was for my son-in-law from Jessica Bond at 800-926-3136 x3037. Caller ID was GCS 314-576-3852. I am not connected to my daughter or son-in-law's accounts in any way. How they got my number I don't know. I called SIL and gave him info. I'm not going to return the call yet. If they call again, I will, and tell them not to call again.
- Caller: GCS
- CelesteCalled my direct line at work multiple days in a row. No voicemail. I finally called back and was told it's "JC Services." I would not give them my name - only the number they have been calling. After being transferred to 3 different people trying to get my name - they told me they would remove my number from the list.
