I answered the phone only because my sister lives in the 323 area code.  They asked for my ex-wife's daughter's husband, who has never lived in my house and has never has this number.  The daughter hasn't lived here in over 15 years.  WTF?  To their credit, the caller was polite and apologetic when I told him nobody by that name lives here.

I didn't pick up but if it's the Church of Scientology then this is seriously messed up. I am generally not in the habit of gossiping but was having a weak moment of schadenfreude over Tom Cruise's split w/ Katie Holmes and had posted a catty related article on a friend's Facebook wall. Moments later, my phone rings. They need to get their priorities straight!

They called me this morning asking if I had lived at an address I haven't been at in over 8 years. I've never given this number to them and expicitly tell anyone I know not to give out my number. How the [***] do they get new numbers?

The national pandemic of telephone terrorism perpetrated by desperate criminal collection agencies and scam artists of every despicable sort is because they are trying to terrorize people who are naive enough to answer and submit to unsolicited telephone calls or written "collection" letters that have no legitimate legal debt associated with them or any of the companies, universities, or whomever else they claim to represent. Because most "little guys" were bankrupted by the criminal Wall St / Congress / Big Oil / Big Bankers / Big Business / Military / Robber Barons, so the desperate collection agencies are attempting to collect unpaid debts from innocent people by terrorizing them into submission. News reports claim that some of these nefarious rogue calls are originating from overseas, where the caller claims to be a relative down on his or her luck who needs hundreds or thousands of dollars to get out of trouble, a policeman or government agent threatening their unwitting victims with lawsuits, fines, garnishments, seizures of property and imprisonment, and any other unconscionable tactic they can use to terrify and swindle the unwary out of their life savings.

Word of advice. NEVER answer any calls you don't recognize or are not expecting. Use selective call rejection service if available, or switch to an Internet-based telephone service which provides comprehensive call rejection options. If rogue calls become chronic, turn off all the ringers on all of your phones except one, and set its volume to the minimum setting. If you don't answer the call and the caller is legitimate, they will usually leave a voicemail after the first or second try. Rogue callers almost never leave voicemail messages because that could be used as evidence against them if it came to a lawsuit. If you receive a rogue letter in the mail warning you of some "collection" action against you, if you don't actually owe it, reply with a short letter stating that you don't owe it. Or if you do owe all or part of it, reply with something like "You claim I owe you a debt. Under §809 FDCPA, I request validation of this debt."

Only give them your name as THEY have written it to you (e.g. “John Doe” not “Jonathon Q. Doe” or however you normally sign your own name), address, and the account number they report. But if you do not owe the debt (zombie debt, aged debt, mistaken or stolen identity, forgery, etc.) state that you have never done any business with them or with the (alleged) original creditor of any kind and you expect the collection agency to close the matter, stop harassing you and take any bad credit marks they've caused off of your credit rating, and furthermore, that any further contact from them must be in writing on their official business correspondence letterhead. Send your letter to them a.s.a.p., always within thirty days, first class certified mail return receipt requested. If they refuse it and you get the letter back unopened, leave it unopened and save it in your files as evidence against them should they pursue legal action against you. If they did receive it and continue to pursue action against you, let them. The judge will throw it out of court. If the rogue collection agency sells your account to another rogue collection agency just tell them the claim has been proven invalid and offer to send them a copy of your letter to the previous rogue collection agency.

Warn all your friends about this rash of desperate collection agency terrorism, and how to combat it. Knowledge is power. The more you learn how to combat rogue collection agencies, back-taxes scammers, phishing scammers, "faith and family" scammers, political action committees and other low-life flimflammers, the more you will learn how easy it is to do.

Above all, keep a record of everything, of every rogue call w/ caller ID information displayed including time and date of each call. Maintain a complete file on any snail-mailed intimidation from rogue collection agencies, including copies of all correspondences and postal receipts. Reporting rogue calls on sites like 800notes.com, whocallsme.com, phoneowner.info is a great idea too, because many people find these sites by googling for the rogue number(s) after receiving calls from them.

Getting calls from the Twilight Zone
The compulsive, unrelenting, obsessive phone calling people and leadership at the "Church of Scientology International", and at other Scientology locations, are definitely in need of a good smack on their behinds & behind bars, or perhaps even an exorcism will work. The definitely do need their spell broken, or a free non-stop ticket out of The Twilight Zone.

To persistently harass others to the point of driving even the healthiest, calmest, most peaceful and wisest up a wall, is demonic. They don't seem to have any idea of how truly insane and possessed they appear to be acting.  They can even act like out-of-control, unempathetic, patronizing narcissists -- even revengeful when confronted.

For instance, when I confronted Pam, the head of the "Address or Mailing Department" at the "Church of Scientology International", (as of November 2012) and demanded that no one from there call me anymore, she had someone call me two days later, and even after the legal hour of 9pm, at 9:15pm!

She even attempted to convince me that she sincerely understood me when we spoke over the phone two days prior: "Oohh, I completely understand," she said with all sweetness and light. "I caan tootallly relaate." What vile evilness her behavior truly is. But oh no, in this group's mind, Pam's scripted & fake speech is heroic. We're in The Twilight Zone folks.

What would truly be truly heroic is when this group has the courage to really reassess how they do business and change their ways.  But they are currently too embarrassed and even too terrified to do this. Instead of really going deep and healing themselves of their own wounds,  they continue harassing others. They do this to make it appear that what they are doing is alright to do. It's truly laughable when you think about this!

The current overall patronizing and attitude of superiority of their leadership and of their staff members is truly astonishing, and can be truly alarming when you think about in another way. They appear to take pride in the delusion that their compulsive, self-centered and fearful behavior stems from being all-knowing and powerful, and The Cream of the Crop.

In their minds, they believe they are wearing a  badge of the "Good Guy", but believe you me, these phone callers have no real concern for you or understanding of you deep down. Their hearts are not truly pure and compassionate -- or healing. If they were, they would truly be kind towards and respectful of others, and not call those not interested.

Their exhausting phone calling is actually based on a game of statistics and numbers, or completing what they call their weekly "Battle Plans". The more people they call by Thursday at 4pm, the more they are praised and applauded within their small group. You as a person, with your own limitations and self-determination, and need for respect and peace, honestly do not matter to them. Their need to be admired and praised and acknowledged within their group is a far greater need of theirs than your own. Actually, their needs are so great that their calling us is THEIR plea for help!

Listen. Scientology IS run like a dysfunctional business, not a religion. If you're so inclined help break them from their spell. Help save them! Report their harassing and obsessive phone calls to their nearest Better Business Bureau (BBB). For instance, the address for the BBB for the "Church of Scientology International" in Los Angeles, CA is 6125 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232. The address of that particular "church" is 6331 Hollywood Blvd. LA, CA 90028.

Here are more phone numbers they can call from at the Los Angeles location: 323-580-5520;323-580-5513; and 323-839-3803.

claim there wanted to update their records, church of scientology. I told them we are not in this religion and that we have told you before to stop calling, and to take us out of their contact database. They claim that they will, I even called back and asked them to remove us. I will see. Also, I am going to contact the Church of Scientology and let them know that people are calling supposely on their behalf.

OK, This is how you get scientology to quit calling you permanently:

    Your phone rings:  Hello?
Cult: Is this Mary Beth Higgins?
    You: who is calling please?
Cult: this is the Church of Scientology.
You: (wait a few seconds ) then say to someone else in the living room " could you turn that up, a little, please?" (wait a few seconds, then say) OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! DID YOU SEE THAT??? It's on TV. The FBI is raiding the Church of Scientology!! They've got law enforcement, swat ......Now they're dragging someone out .....it says it's DavidMiscavige, Chairman of the Board..... now he's running away!! OH NO NO NO!!! They're shot him in the back!!! Now they're going after anyone in that building, it's a bloodbath!!!!
Look I don't know where you are at, but you'd better start running, cause it's a nationwide sweep to catch all the sea org members........FBI has declared scientology a terrorist organization.....You'd better run!!!
    Hang up.
    Then laugh!
That should do it, once they figure out its a prank, they'll never call you again!!!
