- Benjamin J. Whysall| 3 repliesNot happy with the customer service from these people. Jason Nui was our first visitor trying to push the sale, against my better judgement I agreed to go into the deal, based on the price, the financing, & the finished product being a "turn-key" kitchen.
Boy, was I led astray.
About a week after Jason's first visit a GE Money Bank card showed up the mail with an $8800 limit, I thought this is weird, we ordered nothing, got nothing yet we are in $8800 of debt?
Our second visitor was Jason again, to sign the "contract".
Jessica came by a few weeks later, to do the design. The work she did was pretty good, not the greatest, but it for what it was worth, it looked fine to me. I am guessing she is the one who specified what cabinets, hardware & add-ons that would be ordered. So far it seems like she did a pretty goood job, I'm only half way through the install though.
We were told the cabinets would take about 3 weeks to get from the factory. Fair enough.
3 weeks went by, no cabinets, no call. I put a a call into Kitchen Carolina(KC) got transfered to a "project manager's voicemail", & never recieved a call back, until a week later. I then received a call saying the cabinets would be delivered on 11/18. Alright.
About early November, I revceived a call saying the cabinet delivery day has been moved to 12/18. I said, "Woah, woah, woah. I am having Christmas at my house this year I can't have a torn up kitchen, or piles of boxes in my house".
KC delayed delivery unitl 12/28.
On 12/28, I received a call from Tyler Sheets, stating KC could no longer perform the install on our cabinets or granite counters. I told them, "the entire deal is off, I need a check for $8800 to me so I can pay off the GE Money Bank accontt immediately. You keep your cabinets, I'm through with you people".
Mr. Sheets informed me that due to a contractual agreement the cabinets were mine and I was required to accept delivery of the cabinets. Fair enough, screwed a little by the contract.
We settled on a price. However, as of this writing I have not received a check from KC (not that it would be any good) or do I have documented eveidence that GE money has processed the dispute that Cana Selfors of KC told me to file with GE Money Bank.
I received delivery of the cabinets on 12/30. The delivery people from Armstrong were quite professional & helpful.
I have installed the first part of the cabinets. Not so bad.
I just feel bad for the people who have been really screwed by this company and its employees.
If they are to continue to do business, they should call themselves boxes clearing house, because they are unable to supply anything but that. - NIMBY replies to Benjamin J. WhysallTyler Sheets was wrong.... you had a contract for a turn key kitchen. There is no way that they could force you to accept delivery of cabinets without honoring the rest of the agreement that you signed. You had a contract for TURN KEY kitchen....this included installation of the cabinets, granite, etc. I hope you got a GREAT deal on the cabinets. I hate to think that they coerced you into thinking that you had to accept the cabinets...you didn't. THEY violated the contract not you. If you are concerned that you got taken...I would definately contact an attorney and let them look at your contract. An inital consultation is usually around $150.00. My gut tells me that KC took advantage of the situation and told you that you had to accept the cabinets. This is NOT right. I would contact GE Money and I would also contact Linda Matthews at the NC Dept of Justice Consumer Affairs Dept. I think that she would recommmend that you file a complaint ( to go with all the others). Good luck to you.
- Benjamin J. Whysall| 11 repliesHi NIMBY, thanks for the words of advice. I was definitely coerced into accepting delivery of the cabinets, Mr. Sheets referenced section 10.2 of the contract (I believe that was it, I do not have the contract in front of me right now) Once I get the contact in front of me I can quote it, but it basically says the contractor (KC) may cancel the contract at anytime, and seek recovery for previously ordered custom cabinets, including profit.
GE Money bank has been sent the dispute form the same day it was requested by Cana Selfors. If it turns out that GE Money Bank never credit my account then KC will be sent an invoice for the services I had to provide. My rate is not cheap, about $200 per hour(yes, I am at least that good). currently, I am at about 16 hours, & only half the cabinets are in. Then I'll add the cost of the counters, quotes are coming in around $2000. Then the additional plumber cost, at least $150.
What is the best way to go about contacting Linda Matthews at NCDOJ Consumer Affairs Department?
I read through the posts on here & feel horrible for the families that have had to go without a kitchen because of this company.
On a side note, I spoke with contractor today, who said that there is information going around that Kitchen Carolina has been purchased by Armstrong Cabinets, due to outstanding receivables, or something like that. Not sure if this is true or not? - Inside replies to Benjamin J. Whysall| 1 replyThats not true.. Armstrong is not buying Kitchen Carolina. They aren't backing them whatsoever!!!!!!!!!! Anyone telling that is lying.
Armstrong is furious with Rob. Rob has done nothing but give Armstrong a bad name and Armstrong is flooded with complaints about Kitchen Carolina. Armstrong is sick of it.
Good luck with your kitchen. If anyone thinks that Rob will reimburse or deduct any costs from your balance, I'd make sure i would get it in writing. Rob doesn't have any money to pay his employees or subcontractors. - Kermit replies to InsideListen everyone I have turned in a complaint to WRAL, 5 on your side and they said they would look at opening a case, so the more people to file a complaint with them, the better chances of getting it on the air so we can shut Kitchen Carolina down and stop them from ripping off any more people.

The phone number is 919-716-6000 and Linda Matthews is the person who is handling all the Kitchen Carolina complaints. I would call her ASAP and explain your situation.
I looked at my contract and it does say that the contractor can recover the cost of the cabinets and profit BUT it says... "if the work is stopped for any reason through no act or fault of the Contractor". They told you that they weren't going to be able to complete your kitchen so they have no legal right to say that you owe them for the cabinets. THEY violated the terms of the contract NOT you. They are not being honest with you and I would think that it would be worth the $$ to speak with an attorney. At least let the attorney look at your contract. Please do not rely on anything that Cana or Rob Selfors ( or Tyler Sheets)tell you. My advice is for you to contact GE Money directly and explain your situation and then ask them to send you the dispute form. GE Money is very familiar with Kitchen Carolina and all the complaints. Do not believe for one second that Kitchen Carolina is going to reimburse you for your extra expenses...that won't happen. I am sorry that you are in this situation. - nick nack paddy whack give em all a loan replies to Nimby| 2 repliesWell I will no longer give Rob the benefit of the doubt. Kitchen Carolina is not going to last more then a few more months. It is all going to crash and burn. I wanted to give them a chance to succeed but all they are doing is now managing a negative cash flow.
They have no credit anywhere and are now trying to device ways to get around it..here's how. They are going to use their cabinet installers as the contractor. the cabinet guys are going to be hiring all the other trades and they will be taking care of all the pay outs. Kitchen Carolina will only have to pay 1 guy..the cabinet guy and he in turn will pay all the other subs if he chooses to use them,ie plumbing, electric, tile.
Kitchen carolina is selling kitchens again and they are going to do everything they can to sell a whole bunch of them just to get the work on the books. They will not take the money until it's time to do the work. Here is the kicker. Once they have X amount of kitchens sold the business will go up for sale for enough money for Rob and the queen to get out of the serious trouble they are in. All they need is enough contracts signed to hit that certain point needed and they will be out They could be charged with running a ponzi scheme even though it did not start out that way. Once you start using financial institutions to pay for things and then cant deliver and you then have to sell more to try and finish kitchens already paid for and you then don't have the money to start the new ones your in BIG trouble and we are talking hundreds of thousands of dollars here.
They cant pay their bills with any of the vendors with the exception of a granite guy who sells crap granite from China and is one of their "new" contractors.Hes a big dummy who will be sorry he is doing this but hey thats the way the cookie crumbles.
I am going to do everything I can to make sure this company goes out of business because they have SCREWED many people and have SCREWED so many good workers.
They claim to be Christians but they really suck at it. - Benjamin J.Whysall replies to Nimby| 4 repliesThanks again NIMBY.
Yeah I expect nothing from KC. I was being sarcastic about them paying me, I already know they are a bunch of deadbeat crooks, otherwise they would not be in this situation.
At this point, who breached the contract is no longer relavent. I just have to get the delivered cabinets installed now. And sort out my own counter-tops.
I plan to put a call into Linda Matthews tomorrow 1-7-10.
I'm not to stressed about the situation. I am an able bodied person who can get the work done, it is just work I would have rather paid someone else to do.
Me, my spirit levels, drill, saws, doors shims, tape measures, 7 in 1 multi function tool & patience are getting to spend a lot of time together. - Nimby replies to Benjamin J.Whysall| 3 repliesGood luck to you Benjamin! You sound like someone who is always able to look on the bright side. That's admirable. I too believe that "what goes around comes around...." I for one, could not sleep at night if I treated people they way the Selfors do. They give selfishness and greed a whole new meaning. One day they will have to answer for their actions. It's very sad that they are setting this example for their children.
I hope you are able to get your kitchen completed to your satisfaction. Good luck with Linda Matthews. I think that she will be interested to hear your story of how KC made you take delivery of your cabinets. Take care. - Benjamin J. Whysall replies to Nimby| 2 repliesComplaint Report is filed.
- Mike L'Italian replies to KP| 5 repliesi put a post in here and for some reason it was takin down.ALL CONTRACTORS and HOMEOWNERS PLEASE !!!!!! go to almanac superior court and put a small claim in against Rob Selfors, Kitchen Carolina...my court date was yesterday and I WON it against him. I know he reads this site and all he did was lie thru his teeth about everything. So please do what i did, if he doesn't pay within 10 days his home will have a lien put on it by me and the county. So please do it!!!! I already have the paperwork that will be served to him by the clerk of courts and the sherrifs office if he doesn't pay.of course he can appeal this finding ,which he may do and that would be a huge mistake by him. Anybody who did the work for them deserves the pay !!!! so do as i did its worth it...good luck
- Benjamin J. Whysall replies to nick nack paddy whack give em all a loan| 1 replyWho is the granite fabricator? I need to get the counters I was promised at a resonanble rate. If you don't want to post the name on here please email me. benjamin_whysall@yahoo.com
- Kat replies to Brian 69Filing a claim lien against the homeowner does work. I don't know where you got your information from. It doesn't seem fair because the homeowner does not contract with subs, but until the contract is paid by the General contractor, the homeowner is still in possession of unpaid property. It still belongs to the subs until it is paid for.
Subs can file liens to protect the property that isn't paid for. I work for a counter top contractor and we do it all the time to protect our interest. Again, it doesn't really seem fair but the lien can be filed against whomever is is possession of the property. You have to SUE the GC for any financial compensation though. - Kat replies to mrtjAgain, the subcontractor has EVERY right to file a lien against your home. Although you did not originally contract with them, you are in possession of their property if KC has not paid them. Technically, a portion of your home belongs to the subcontractor. The lien protects their property and keeps you from selling what belongs to them. You cannot be sued for the balance of the contract, this is owed by KC and not you (the homeowner). However, a subcontractor does have the right to make a claim on unpaid property or services that added to the value of your home.
This doesn't seem very fair, and it is usually the homeowner that pays the subcontractor to have the lien removed and then sues the general contractor. (In this case K.C.) It is unfortunate, but subcontractors must protect their property. You selling your home with unpaid property inside would be like selling a car that doesn't belong to you. Sorry, but that is the law concerning mechanics and contractors liens. - Absolute Stone replies to Benjamin J. WhysallAbsolute Stone did a great job on our kitchen Countertops. They are located in Cary. The # is (919) 462-8084. They helped us when Kitchen Carolina dropped our job. Give them a call.
- fighting back replies to Another Victim| 1 replyif your card is through GE, then dispute the charge, you have that right in the billing rights portion of the credit card, look on your statment.
Fill as many complaints as you can against them - What an idiot replies to Brian 69How can you possibly think that the homeowner is reponsible for paying you. The contract you have if you do have a contract is with Kitchen Carolinas not the homeowner. Good Luck
- FYI To ALL replies to KPMake sure you close your GE account down if you finaced so it can not be charged more, dispute the amount with GE if your job is not finished. Also I recommend calling the credit agencies and having a fraud/security alert posted on your credit report to keep Kitchen Carolinas from aplly for crdeit in your name to get paid.
GOOG LUCK TO ALL - big boyhey nick nack, sounds like they're getting their act together. too bad you don't understand business enough to know that business have to change their methods when something isn't working. sounds like a good format to me.
- big boy small brain| 1 replyLOL Big Boy. Businesses change their processes often. An important start in introducing any initial business process is to model that process (called benchmarking - comparing) against other similar, competing, established business in this same market. You then hone (change - tweaks) to that process. You don't start blindly, fail miserably, steal people's money, ruin family lives and run a business into the ground, and then have an epiphany (as the plane is crashing into the ground) to do a wholesale process change. Monitoring measurements should have indicated a failing trend MONTHS ago and changes should have been made then.
You're as dumb as the rest. Go get your GED and then claim perhaps you know your ABC's.
