I forget what it is called, but in the "credit industry" there is a database of credit debt. Separate from the credit reporting bureaus, (i.e. TRANSUNION). Whenever someone defaults on an unsecured loan, it get's reported there. Your debt is listed for collection agencies debt buyers.
Collection agencies, if they can collect, get a percentage. Some will purchase the debt at a wholesale cost, & then try to colect from you. That is how they can offer to settle a debt for less than what is owed.
Disreputable companies will copy the info, use scare tactics, collect from you, and keep it all, without reporting &/or buying the debt.
Some will also just run random social security numbers to see what old debts you have had. Then they pretend it was never taken care of, & try to use scare tactics to force you to pay them.

Why are you replying to a post that is six--going on seven years old? Their information is outdated and your post is irrelevant.

I got a call and could not understand what the person was saying so I told her she had a wrong number. She asked me if I was the lady of the house. I then told her not to call  again

Called just before 9:00 this morning but no one was here to answer.  CID showed" Performant Reco".  I called back and got a recording that instructed me to enter my acct # or Social Security # (!!!).  It also said their business hours were only during the week (today is Saturday) and there was no one to answer the phone unless I had a specific extension #.  So who called me during their "non-business" hours?

I have no account with Performant and no overdue debt of any kind.  So I assume it is regarding a relative who routinely defaults on debts.  If so, I'm afraid Performant is pretty much out of luck because no one gets money from this particular relative.  Only stupid people would extend them credit in the first place and I don't have any sympathy for them!

When the answering machine picked up, they were still on the line--I could hear them breathing, but they didn't say a word. Looked up the number and blocked them.

KJ11, actually not that unbelievable how they tracked you down: your phone number(s). All you need is someone's current or past phone number and you can track them and their relatives through linked phone numbers. You get addresses, too. It's rather creepy how easy it is to track people down. I looked up a phone number I had 25 years ago, and it linked to ALL of my previous addresses, including my current address. Tried the same with friends, and you can see where they moved across the years, from state to state.

Now with that information, you can start looking up relatives of someone for whatever purpose, so the info is out there...(cue X-Files music)

I've gotten calls from a Mike Smith from Performant. They have called me, my work and now my grandmother. Very annoying. I have student loans, but I have a payment agreement set up with the actual company whom my loan is through, so there is no reason this Performant company should be contacting me. So ridiculous.

***A company must be licensed in their state as well as the one they are trying to collect in if two different states are involved.

    Some Tips:
    *Keep all messages
*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.

*Check your SOL for your state as well.

Interesting. These posts are from 2009 and I received a call today, 1/13/2016. I did not answer it as it was not a familiar number so I do not know if it was the same collection agency. Have they been in business all this time?
