Got a call from this number, they refused to identify themselves or say why they were calling.

Message left but couldnt understand them and they hung up. They called the other day and today.

They just contacted one of my Facebook friends, someone that lives in a totally different state, that I've never met in person. This company is ridiulous. I can't imagine that this is legal for them to harass strangers in order to collect information about debt.

Well it is not illegal unless that person has already told them to not call again. Now this is where the ability to read comes in. I see that multiple registered members have given lots of good advice on how to handle this. Maybe time to start reading and learning?

What happens if the loan was excused over 20 years ago due to disability,  with no contact after that.  And then  many years later, Higher Ed. said they lost the files, and then different creditors start harassing, but no garnishment.  Strange, or what ?

If your old debts were forgiven these people will try to get you pay a bit of money and it will reactivate your debt. I saw an article on this last week. Hang up on them.

My, you are simply full of fantastical misinformation today aren't you?  Aside from the fact that you are clearly posting a reply to a 10 year old post and expecting them to see that, where did you get all of this made up information?  Forgiven debts usually come with a 1099-C that turns it into income.  Once that is issued then no one can legally collect the debt and it does not reactivate it if you make a payment.
