Very simple, no scam in my case:

I called Amex with a customer service issue. The lady had to investigate and get back to me. She called from that number.

It's totally legit.  I did apply for an Amex card and the status page on my app said that I would be getting a call.  So, no big deal.  Get over it folks!

Got a call on my cell from Indian guy with british accent today. Lasted about 17min33sec . I hope i didn't get scammed. Asked me last 4 digits of my ss. Called my manager at work to verify my address. Im scared. Area code is from Arizona. I should have known better. I applied for wamu credit card not amex.

I also got a call from (602) 766-6484, and recently applied for an AmEx Costco Business card.  I missed the first call, and was suspicious of the call when I saw it in my Caller ID, but after seeing the posts here and given the fact I recently applied for a card I believe this is a legitimate phone number.

1)Applied for Amex online
2)24 hours later an Indian Guy called asked for last 4 digits of SS# for confirmation
3) Told me to call 866-379-3643 if it was a bad time
4) Went ahead and gave him last 4 digits but was then disconnected in the middle of the conversation - poor reception.
5) 5 minuted later received a confirmation via email that my card had been approved

I guess this number is OK but what a sh!tty system! During those 5 minutes I spent my time on google reading these posts hoping I didn't just get scammed. THANK YOU outsourcing!

American Express now is using telemarketers and calling me when I am on the do not call list. The scam was that they wanted to finish processing my credit application that I never filled out. They gave me the run around and could barely speak English. When I called American Express they said there was no application on file. Now it is time to file a complaint to the FCC http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html

Received call from 602-766-6484 and didn't answer, googling the number while it was still ringing. Found this site then checked my voicemail and it was from AmEx, someone with an indian accent. The phone number he left to return his call was 800-567-1083. I did apply for a Costco AmEx last night so I am sure this is completely legit. However, I called the AmEx number for "application status" and checked my status and it says I am approved and should have my cards in 7-10 days. So, not sure about the phone call... although I am intrigued because I have LifeLock so any new lines of credit should require a phone call to me - so maybe that's what the call was about?? I am tempted to call back just to see.

Wednesday night at around 8:35, I got a call from(1602)766-6484 on the
other end was a guy with heavy Indian accent wanting to verify the last
4 digits of my ss#. I asked what was this in reference to, he said it was
in reference to my recent application for an Amex card. I gave him what
he wanted and instantly said that I was approve. I went to check my in
box, and indeed there was an email saying that my application had been
approved.So in my case, it was not a scam.

I recieved a call from this number. also asked for ssn no. Faint. squeat

This is not from American Express.  I called them and they do not have this number or 866-379-3643.  We got a call from this number during dinner tonight and let it go to the answering machine.  Heavily accented but pleasant woman's voice left a message regarding (my husband's name) application for an American Express card and would he please call 1-866-379-3643.  I called the 866 number and the automated answer asked for SS# and I foolishly put in my own.  Eventually the call was anwered by, again heavy accent but pleasant woman.  She checked my husband's name and said no application had been received.  Since we've had a problem with someone who uses our information to get credit cards I asked for her name to be checked, too.  No application.

They are part of American Express Travel 888-272-9081.

The number is legitimate. But call the number on the back of your Amex Card anyway and ask why you were called. I upgraded to a gold card and that was the reason for me. But we should all be watchful and only call numbers we can 100% verify, like the number on the back of your card or the number on the company web site. Also, 1-800-567-1083 is the new accounts number for Amex.

Four calls in the past hour, two with voice mail messages. A woman with an Indian accent asking me to call Amex about a "recent request."

I didn't answer, but I did apply for an AMEX card recently, so it's probably legit.

I checked the American Express website this morning to see the status of my application. It told me to call 866 314 0237, which I did. They wanted to verify my home address (I frequently move, I expected this to happen.) They needed to call a bank, but the California branches were closed so he said he would call me back. He called me back from this number.

My company accepts Amex as credit card payment.  I had called to update our new banking information and then received a call the next day from 602-766-6484 stating that they were calling from Amex and had to verify my banking information.  I was suspicious, so I told them I'd call back (they gave me 888-854-4549 as the callback #).  

After looking for scams on the internet that included this #, I saw good and bad reports, so I just called Amex, and they told me it was legit.  The 602# is in Arizona where they outsource some of their customer service.  The rep knew the phone numbers without me giving it to him, so it must be legit.

received 2 phone calls from this # within minutes of each other.  The man said his name was Amit - even spelled it for me.  Said that UPS was trying to deliver a package to us and couldn't, and that UPS contacted AmEx to help get it delivered.  I did not give them any information as we don't have an AmEx account.

dumbo thats not a scam..u idiot its a true ph# for amex. i wrk for them and know. and amex has n't outsourced anything to anyone.

Someone keep calling me from this number, but fails to leave a message. I attempted to redial this number, but a male voice recording says, "You've reached a non-working number at American Express, Good-Bye" and then it disconnects. I must say, I have a BLACKCARD holder with American Express and I have not applied for a new account, as the previous posters suggested.
