- Gompers replies to Mark McHenry, Il"Would think that the phone companies could shut a number down that is reported to the Do Not Call list a thousand times."
A Democrat Congress enacted rules requiring phone companies to deliver all calls that were presented to them.
Just a couple of months ago, a Republican Congress passed legislation which allows phone companies to block calls.
However, the problem is not as easy as it sounds. Many scammers spoof the Caller ID. For example, some of them now make it look like your own phone number is calling you. Or they spoof important numbers, like those of large organizations or hospitals. If the phone companies started blocking all numbers reported as being from scammers, then pretty soon ALL calls would be blocked.
Keep in mind that these scammers may be located outside the country and routing their calls through the internet. It really can be difficult to block them, especially because of the caller ID spoofing I mentioned. - Gompers replies to Scrmn98"I called number back and got a message that it was disconnected. Call came from Collinsville,Il. SCAM!!"
Never call back.
If a caller is legitimate, they'll leave a number and a message and they won't keep calling.
If the caller is a scammer, then the number may be spoofed, so if you do reach someone, it may be an innocent party or it might be a non-working number.
If the caller is a scammer and you do get a real phone number, then all you are doing is confirming that they reached a valid number - and they'll sell your number to other scammers.
There is zero benefit to calling back.
Also, the call may not have come from Collinsville. Scammers can spoof the caller ID to make it say ANYTHING they want. The call may have actually come from Pakistan or China or... - Gompers replies to LynnThe DNC list actually works very well - but it works only with legitimate telemarketers who actually abide by it.
Scammers don't follow the rules. So don't blame the DNC list - there is only so much it can do. - Anne-sick-of-telemarketersWhomever, called Saturday afternoon.
Caller ID reads, Collinsville, IL.
After reading comments, most likely, the caller is another scammer collecting donations for 'fake' police. They've called before.- Caller: Collinsville, IL
