FRAUD!   Got call from this number. ID was for American Express but I was on another line. I called the idiot back. He said "HOLA" I said hola? He said I speak spanish. Really, you are American Express and you say Hola? He said nothing else. I told him well you are calling me and identifying yourself as AMEX and you speak only spanish. I will be contacting AMEX. I called them. I spoke w/ a Lauren Buckingham who said there had been resent changes to my account. I made no changes. She gave me the 3rd degree on asking my information. I told her NO, you tell me what changes were made this is MY account and my information! She was of some help but couldn't give me the address change because of security reasons. MY ---- Amex is going to protect the criminal who has my info. and is charging on my account and getting the stuff sent to "my new changed address"? NO, I closed the account which I pay off monthly so I don't pay for his charges they allowed but why didn't they call me immediately about me changing my address to verify? Because they make it so easy for the criminal. I pay my bills American Express you lost me as a customer and so did Costco. I have a business account and I guess they can keep their criminal and loose their paying customer. I can pay in cash BABY. And as for you criminal I got that you are in Arizona and I have turned you in. Hope you get a nice knock on the door early in the morning. SPEAK THAT IN ENGLISH!

    AMEX User
Hi All, This is a legitimate number.  I received a call from them that first had an automated voice say that I had a message from American Express.  I waited for about a minute and heard someone say "Hello" and then got cut off.
I called the number back and was greeted by an American Express employee.  She asked for my account #, and some verification information.  I told her I was reluctant to give it to her and she said if I felt that way that I could call the number on the back of my card if I felt that way.
I ended up giving them the information and they said they the call came from the fraud department and that they were questioning a charge.  They were able to tell me the store and amount that the charge came from (it was a legitimate charge) so that made me feel better.
After hanging up I called the number on the back of my AMEX and the representative said that he was not able to find that number in the directory.  He then called their security department which confirmed that the call did come from them.  He also explained that this number is an internal number and that's why it did not show in the directory.
The AMEX rep also said that their security dept is in Pheonix, Arizona, where this call came from.

This is surely a scam.....we received a call from them too....first thing off the bat is that they said our payment was late and did we want to make a payment over the phone right then and there.....uh, no thanks we told them...our payment wasn't EVEN DUE!

Don't give them any credit card numbers or anything else...this is bogus!

    Frustrated
This is American Express Account Services.  I knew I was going to be late paying my AmEx balance due to unplanned expenses that popped up in my life, so I proactively contacted them via email.  I set up payment arrangements ($1,000 a month until my balance was paid in full, which would take approximately 4 months) and they said they would make the necessary notation on my account and very politely thanked me for being proactive and making my payment promise.  THEN THE CALLS BEGAN.  I was receiving these calls from account services every day to my cell phone and my work phone.  It was very frustrating... just a recorded message everytime.  Finally I called Account Services and they told me that they couldn't access the many emails I had exchanged with AmEx Customer Service and according to my account there were no payment arrangements.  I was very disapointed with this disconnect in their company.  The customer servce people are usually very helpful and courteous, but the one gal I spoke with was nasty to me.  I told her I had every intention of paying my balance and I was not a deadbeat and she was just such a snot.  I am very frustrated by this. I'm hoping the calls will stop now.  Talk about harrassment... and I tried to do the right thing!  SOOO FRUSTRATING!

I also got a call from this number-  they said I had an outstanding balance on my AMEX and tried to get me to pay it off over the phone.  I don't have an AMEX, and explained that.  Then they said I did, and that it was issued by my company, and then gave the correct company name that I work for.  I asked for a call back number, and they gave me 1-800-441-0521.  Then I called there several times, the agents seemed unprofessional.  Waited my whole day trying to sort this one out.

Got the call during my first billing cycle. Calls are received in the AM, lunch, week ends.

    Frustrated... still
It's me again... Frustrated... I have made payment arrangements with AmEx and have been in contact with customer service and account services.  The calls stopped for a week, but they just began again.  If this is not a form of harrassment, I don't know what is.  I have been honest and forthright with this company about my situation and they continue to call me night and day.  Once my balance is paid, I don't think I will remain an AmEx customer.  I'm sure some of the representatives are worried about AmEx job cuts we've been hearing about in the news, but it doesn't mean they should be short, mean, and nasty and harrass their customers.

    Ticked off!
Number called our phone at 8 am on a holiday weekend and woke us up.  I googled to see what number was, upon reading here I called the AMEX 1-800 number and asked if AMEX had been calling me (my account is currently no payment due). 1-800 lady said no one from AMEX had called me that day.  I called the 623 back and it claimed to be American Express and wanted my account number, which I didn't give them.  Got some lady from India on the phone and I told her I thought she was a scam because AMEX had never heard of them and hung up.  I reported them to AMEX, if they call again I'll report them again.

Definitely a Scam replies to New York City
I called Amex after these people claimed to call me.  It was easy on my end since they called my cell phone, which I never gave American Express to begin with.  They wanted my card number or social security, which I naturally refused to give them....I insisted he put me on his do not call list and he eventually did after I threatened to call the FBI (another red flag - if I were actually a customer he couldn't legally put me on the DNC).  I called Amex afterward, they told me this was not from them or sanctioned by them and there was nothing wrong with my account.  Scam, Scam, Scam.

THIS is a SCAM and it is alive and well as of 12/22/08. Never-ever does a legitimate company ever ask for an account number.

    AmexOwner
With all of the phishing going on these days I was skeptical as well.  I called the number on the back of my card and asked them to verify the number.  They verified that it is indeed a valid number from Amex.

To help others, they should post these numbers on their site...

** THIS NUMBER IS LEGITIMATE **

I received a call from this number today and they left a recorded voicemail saying that they needed to verify a fraudulent charge on my AMEX. I was a bit skeptical as well, but a few minutes later, I also received an email from American Express with the same contact number.

I called the number on the back of the card instead since I was still a bit skeptical and sure enough, there were two back to back charges, one for $500 for Toys R' Us and one for over $4,000 from Best Buy on my wife's credit card! I called my wife to make sure that she hadn't gone on a Christmas shopping spree and she almost threw up when she realized that the AMEX along with other credit cards and ID's in her wallet were gone. Apparently somebody had snagged them while she wasn't paying attention. I cancelled the card right away and we were not responsible for the charges.

I'm VERY, VERY, VERY glad that American Express was able to spot these fraudulent charges so quickly so that we could cancel this card.

When I called American Express, they did verify the last 4 digits of my social security number, but they didn't ask for other personal information. After they verified my identity they disclosed what the charges were and where they had been made. Nowhere near where we had been today. The charges were posted in Atlanta, GA while we were in Louisville, KY

Once again, don't dismiss calls from this number, proceed with caution but in my experience it was a VERY legitimate call that I'm thankful for!

First I noticed a missed call from an unknown number and they left a voicemail saying it was American Express attempting to verify a charge. They gave me the option of calling an 800 # or the # on the back of my card. I chose the number on the back of the card because I'm not trusting someone with an unknown number. So I called the number on the back of my card and talk to a representative who tells me about a recent declined charge on one of my additional cards, which indeed had JUST occurred. I told them that charge was now invalid since we had gone ahead and used my card instead...and he asked me to verify that all cards were in possession. I verified this.

5 minutes later I get a call from this 623 number...I didn't answer and immediately googled like I always do. So now I am VERY confused and worried.
