I called Amex directly and asked if this was one of their numbers and was told this number 623-492-6031 is NOT their number.  Also the number that this recording gives for you to call back is also NOT an AMEX number (1-800-592-1160). This is a fraudulent company.  Do NOT call these people back.  Instead call AMEX to report them.  I have reported these numbers to AMEX and their fraud team is now working on this.  Whatever you do, never call the number back.  If you have an AMEX card, use the 800 number on the back of the card to contact AMEX

Ok so i got this call as a wake up call didn't answer it. I looked up the number and read all of the replys on this page then i called the number back in hope of at least getting them to remove me from their calling list i spoke to a woman that immediatly asked for my acct # i told her that I could not give her that information then she said that their was a problem with my account and that i needed to verify my acct # exp date and 3 digit vin located on the back of my acct ( i was trying not to die laughing at this time) at this point i explained that i did not have an acct with amex and have never had an acct with amex (the truth) she at this point said that i was being called because their current past due customers where asked to provide 10 numbers of family and friends that they (amex) could call and try to collect the past due amount from (i lost it at this point) i told her that i had never heard of any cc company doing such a thing and that none of the cc's i have ever had have done anything like that then i experessed that i do not know anyone with an amex card and she stumbled a sec then siad that they often recive false numbers and have even called several hospitals and fire stations and that i should ask my family and friends for their card numbers and call back i told her that thier is no way i would do that and that several websites on the internet called this number a scam she said repetedly that this was "no scam" i asked her to remove my number and she said she would

i called the amex customer service # i got from their website and told them about the call he told me that the numbers i gave him were in fact not associated with amex in any way and took a report of the call

I didn't answer the call. I usually don't answer phone calls from people I don't know, and we're on the Do Not Call registry. The oddest thing was that instead of a name, there was another phone number listed on Caller ID.

We keep receiving calls from these fools and when I call AmEx they don't say that the company isn't affiliated with them they just tell me to disregard the calls.  Not gonna happen!  They called me on Sunday and they got reported big time!  I have managed to find out, through numerous phone calls, that this company is the collectons company for American Express and they are doing a piss poor job.  My account is set up so the money due is automatically taken out of my account yet I am told I owe money and haven't paid in months.  Finally stopped trying to explain this to the morons and got the BBB involved. This is outsourced and probably isn't actually in the United States judging by the complete inability of anyone that I have talked to to speak much English. They also have a habit of putting down the phone to go find someone that can understand my language.  American Express you stink and you need to go out of business and take your crappy collections agency with you.  But if you want to have some fun keep these morons on the line and screw with them. When they ask you for a Soc Sec # make one up!!!!  Talk real fast and then put the phone down while you watch, I don't know, The Wizard of Oz perhaps. Turn it into a fun experience for all involved.

I got a call on my go phone cell phone. I didn't answer. They left a message saying:
This is American Express, this is not a telemarketer, this is  a personel business matter on your account, call us at 1-888-8192135. Have your account number ready. Available 24 hours a day everyday.

I have gotten several calls from this number.  I do not answer the phone and they usually don't leave a voice mail.  However, one day I DID have a voice mail from American Express saying that they were calling about my account and to have my account number ready when I called.  Funny thing -- I don't even HAVE an AmEx card, and there isn't one on my credit report (so not a case of someone having a card in my name).

I received 4 calls from this number in the past 3 days. I had one voicemail stating that I had an issue w/my Amex card, so I should call them back. I called the real Amex help line and they said that my account had no issues. I am fairly certain that this number is a scam. DO NOT give them any personal info.

This is truly AMEX calling. It's their 'collections department'.  If you feel they're calling you in error, you need to call American Express, but the number is legit.  I know because my friend stopped paying her card and they've been trying to reach her.  This is the number they call from. You can rest assured, if some agency was calling to scam a whole bunch of money from people using American Express' name, they would not still be around.

sorry everybody...i don't like to be on the side of credit card companies but this was a totally legitimate call...was on my caller ID when i got home...looked it up on the web since the area code was unknown to me...saw all your postings...they called back not long after and i decided to test insted of hanging up...they were calling from Amex Blue which i have one...they asked when i'd make a payment...i was indeed late...i gave them absolutely no personal info...he mentionned updating the files and i said "ok...what needs updating?"..he proceeded to confirm my employment, approx. salary & phone numbers...never there was mention of my Amex Blue account number or my SSN or birth date, etc...this was not a scam at all...i'm very careful about this stuff since having my identity stolen in 2004...good luck to all

We actually turned these idiots in.  It is American Express and they have a separate collection department, only problem is they have no clue what they are doing.  Am Ex has gone down hill in the past few years and this is a clear indication of their poor accounting.  When I told the idiot Am Ex takes the money out of our account each month there was dead silence while the moron attempted to comprehend what I was saying. He kept saying I needed to send a check right away.  I laid the phone down and walked away.  I wonder how long the tele-idiot talked to no one?  Idiots!

I had a message today telling me to call 1-800-678-0738 to discuss a personal business matter with AMEX. I called AMEX directly from the number on the website (after reading the info on this site) .  The representative told me that the 1-800-678-0738 IS a legit AMEX number, but that there didn't seem to be a reason for them to call me.  He tried to call that department while I was on hold, but eventually came back and said the wait time was WAY too long.  He said that he knows that sometimes that particular department calls people in error.  My account is in good standing (and has always been).  There would be no reason for them to call me.  I'm still not going to call that 1-800 number directly, just in case.  I'll call AMEX from the number listed on the card or website.

Missed call from my cell phone. Went straight to google to make sure it was a legit number because I've been job hunting (wonder if that's where they got my info?) and don't want to miss potential interviews, requests, etc...

Saw all this posting and figured I'd chime in.

Saounds like it would be a good idea to leave these people alone...

    I work for Amex
don't expect the people at the number on the back of your Amex card to be able to tell you if this number is legit or not.

i work for Amex in their corporate card division. i work in a quasi call center that books appointments for our corporate card sales reps to meet with large corps who want some of the specialized products designed for large companies. The calls transfered to me from other depts in other divisions within Amex drive me nuts. it seems the call center empoyees don't know any numbers except mine and dump all their calls they can't handle to my office. i can't even begin to tell you how inept the customer service, apply by phone and other call center employees are. The agents know they are transfering to the corporate card division - and that the customer on the other end of the line is a consumer card account holder. the card member wonders why they were sent to us (so do we). however we are able to determine what number they really need to call, but handling these calls is an incredible waste of time. the bottom line is that Amex has 100's of different numbers for customer service, apply by phone, membership rewards, gift cards, credit, risk etc - in their consumer division, their OPEN small business division and for the corporate card division. if you call the number on the back of your card -they will be able to help you - but they have NO CLUE who to transfer you to if you need another service, if you are having trouble with the web site or if you accidentally called the wrong Amex office.

I have appealed all the way up the chain to the VP of marketing for the USCC division, and they do nothing, don't care and aren't concerned about the poor customer service experience card members go through

thats another thing, the three charge/credit card product divisions, consumer, business and corporate cards compete aganst themselves, try to steal clients from the other two, giving bogus info regarding card program dfferences and pre-qualifying info. if you are wondering why Amex customer service has gone downhill - this is a main reason why. its like three different competing companies.

also, if you need the right help from AMEX - DO NOT CALL DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE FOR A NUMBER, they will give you any AMEX toll free number at random. you will then get someone from Amex but they are typicalaly clueless as to how to help you becase they work for a huge organization with call centers all over the US and the third world and they only know the information thats posted on their cube - which isn't much

also, the web site is broken more than it works - i get all those calls and can't help them.

the number is from phoenix, the city where most card services call centers are located - well, that are actually amex employees, not third party. they handle consumer applications, consumer customer service, credit and risk. i also know some corporate card sales is also handled by a telemarketing team out of there for smaller corporations.

Stated that they were from American Express and wanted to discuss my account activity.   I have had AMEX for over 20 years and no problems - never late payments.  I contacted AMEX and they said our account was in good standing and they did not call.
