This an American Express collection agency.  Don't believe me?  Call 1-800-528-4800 and ask about this number.  They will tell you directly.

I just received a call from this number and they are 100% legit.  This is American Express calling about my corporate care.  I had submitted my expenses but there was a holdup internally at my company so AMEX had not yet received the payment.  They were very nice and polite.  They provided me with key info - didn't ask for any sketchy info from me and simply wanted to know what was going on with the payment.

Got a voicemail from this number about a security alert.  Called the regular number on the back of the card, and just as the voicemail had said, was automatically transferred to the security group, who wanted to verify a charge I'd tried to make.  100% legit.

Northern Star, I hope you didn't get scammed by verifying all your personal information. Don't you think it was strange for a credit card company to call and verify your personal information and make NO MENTION of your card?  That sounds very suspicious to me because AMEX has never done that.  You may have just gotten your identity stolen. God, I hope not.

Thanks everyone else for verifying that this is a scam.

Keep getting calls from 623-492-6031 saying to call them back regarding an urgent matter on my American Express card.  HOWEVER, I do not have American Express.  I called to tell that and they started asking me personal information.  I hung up as it is obviously a scam.  I sent the REAL Amercian Express an e-mail explaining this fraud.

These types of companies are legal. Not the most ethical types, and kinda pond scum. They contract with AmEx, ATT and the like and try to get you to make your payment thru them. They get a commish on the payment. The big companies down-size their in-house collections departments and save money and, hopefully, turn their receivables faster because you think some one is after you. problem is, these companies buy a list. They don't know if you have a card, owe any money, etc. they get your info and build their data base. If they call, make them give you all YOur pertinent info. the big companies have your info in file, they won't give it to outside contractors.

Had a missed call from this number. When I called the number back, they requested my AmEx account number, and I consequently hung up.

After calling the number on the back of my card, however, I found that the original number WAS legitimate. They needed to verify my address, etc.

As usual, if you feel suspicious then just call the number on your actual card. But this looks legit.

If you call 1-888-258-3741 on the back of your card, they will tell you that number is legit. So it's not a scam, and I'm not stupid.

It's of course completely normal to be suspicious. That's fine. I'm not encouraging anyone here to blindly give this other number your acct information. But this phone number isn't a scam.

Wrong. They are not posing as AmEx people. They ARE AmEx people. Just call the number on the back of your card if you're suspicious and they'll clear it up.

I got a call from this number.  Didn't pick up.  They left a message and they said it was AMEX.  I don't even have a credit card at all.  Why would they call me?  If it's a scam, then ok, I just won't pick up.  But could someone possibly have opened a credit card in my name?

I received the call this morning and they were saying I have an outstanding balance, the due date and dollar amount they were claiming are correct. Besides, I also tried to pay online twice, but didn't work at all, probably because I put the wrong bank account #. They only asked what's my name and my birth place, then I gave them my bank routing # and account #..then that's it. Hopefully it's not a scam and not trying to stole my personal information..
