Interesting to see all the weird events associated with this number.  I work at a technology company that does business with Dell, and I just had a phone conference with an engineer in a computer lab at one of their sites in Austin, TX.  The number on my caller ID was 800-289-3355, which was unknown to me.  I only answered because I was expecting the call, but I also Googled it just out of curiosity.  Maybe all of their outside calls are funnelled through one number?  If that's the case, it's possible that any call from any Dell site may appear to be this number.  There are a lot of Dell employees, so plenty of opportunity for wrong numbers or mischief.

Just got a call from a very nice gentleman with a slight Indian accent, asking if I had ordered anything from them on my AmEx card.  Told him no, and he told me to contact Amex, as someone had used my card for an order.  Did not ask me for any info other than my name.  Hmmm.

Dell - I made the mistake of giving them my cell phone (supplied by my company) while working through a customer service issue (that was escalated and complaints filed - not a happy customer).  They were advised I did not want the number published or added to their files because I work in an environment where it is a security violation to talk on a cell phone.  I even offered a landline phone to reach me in the event of urgency (surprising how they avoid the secure line number ... if I was calling for a legitimate business purpose, I wouldn't have a problem with that).

They refuse to stop calling the cell number and only call it during the times I have nistructed them not to.

I just learned from the people I work with that calls to cell phones are prohibited under the FCC laws.

I just called them back with a final warning, one more call and I file a complaint with the FCC for telephone abuse. Telemarketers can not call cell phones (by the way neither can debt collectors under this law - they can't cost you money)

So much for the fair warning the other day, they called 6 times so far today.  When I picked up the phone, no one would answer.

I just ordered a dell online about 1 hr ago and just recieved a phone call from this number.  I used a Virtual Account # from Citibank to make the purchase so I know no one will be able to use it again and I also used a one number service so I did not have to give my cell or home # to dell.  I am guessing they are trying to sell me something else.  I dont need no stinkin extra warranty.

I bought a Dell on-line and about 4 hours later a woman with an Indian accent called me from this number claiming to be from Dell.  She had my order number and purchase ID from Dell.  She said my credit card was declined and asked me for my card number so she could try it again.  Didn't give it to her, of course.  When I called my credit card company, the charge had gone through with no problem.

Incoming phone call from this number today onto my work provided cell phone.  The only people who are supposed to have my number are my security team and myself.  I did not answer the call and no voice mail was left but it greatly disturbs me if this is indeed Dell.  To get my unlisted cell, they must just be randomly dialing numbers,  If they call again I am going to answer.

Just an FYI if you get a call from this # or from Dell it isnt always a telemarketer...Dell does not do cold call sales.  It could possibly be from the Asset Protection Department (fraud departement) trying to verify if you are opening a Dell account or if you are using your credit card to place an order.  I worked for this department and it was our job to verify that the it was the actual person making the order and not someone trying to steal your identity.  Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America, on any one day I would come across at least 3 to 4 orders and credit applications that were fraudulent.  Try to be understanding to this people calling they are only looking out for your best interests.  And in this instances there are no rules as to how late or early in the day that they are aloud to contact you.  They are trying to protect you and the company from losing potentially thousands of dollars and a lot of heart ache.  Thanks for your time

Just received a call on my cell and looked it up and found this site.  I just ordered a laptop for my son from Dell, so this makes sense.  I didn't recognize the number so I didn't answer, thinking if it was anything important, they'd leave a voicemail, but they didn't.

To the poster that used to work for Dell:  It's common courtesy not to call someone at 5am in morning unless it is an emergency.  Since the callers are not saying anything when people answer nor are they leaving vm's, I'm guessing those calls are not "Identity Theft" emergencies, wouldn't you agree?

    Not a Victim
I have an identity thief who is using my name, address, DOB, SSN, etc., to apply for credit at various places.  Dell was one of them.  I wrote a letter to Dell requesting information on the fraudster's application, and Dell sent it to me.  I had a question, and the Dell fraud representative called me back.  This was the number that appeared on the caller id.

Call back from Dell tech support to confirm the address they were sending a part to.
Also got another call from another Dell rep (who was CC'd on previous email) to confirm my problem was being resolved.

Got a call at 11:13 pm at night. I am very upset. Dell sent me a defective computer and I have been trying to troubleshoot with them. I specifically made and appointment for them to call at 7pm Eastern Standard Time. Instead, I got one at 1pm in the afternoon, and just a half-hour ago. I am very bothered by this.

Every time they call I send them to voicemail and warn the person they ask to speak to that they may not really be Dell.

What I want to know is:
IF this is Dell calling (and not someone spoofing Dell's phone number as their own), why do they not disclose that on the caller ID?  Why does it say, "Toll Free" instead of "Dell"?
Checking the TCPA, it clearly states that a company must identify itself through Caller ID.  Any lawyers in the house that see loopholes around this?  The only one I can think of is if they claim they don't fit the definition of "telemarketer", but still, why hide?

"If you have caller ID, a telemarketer is required to transmit or display its phone number and, if available, its name or the name and phone number of the company for which it is selling products. The display must include a phone number that you can call during regular business hours to ask that the company no longer call you. This rule applies even if you have an EBR with the company, and even if you have not registered your home phone number(s) on the national Do-Not-Call list. Before these rules took effect, the words “private,” “out of area,” or “unavailable” might have appeared on the Caller ID display." http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/tcpa.html

I'm getting a bit tired of this! replies to Wowo
These people are persistent and annoying, even leaving multiple voice mails on my cell phone. I probably won't buy another computer from Dell. This is marketing gone bad, and that's saying something coming from me - I'm a marketing manager by trade. If I happen to answer one of these calls, I'm going to feel sorry for the person on the other end - after I get done telling them what I think of their STUPID approach to telemarketing.

Dell's privacy policy probably says "YOU HAVE NONE ONCE YOU BUY SOMETHING FROM US."

They called this afternoon on my business cell. No answer on the other line so i called back. They told me to call a different number. It was no longer in service and that machine gave me another number to call. After calling the third number i was held on hold for about 30 min for them just to tell me that everything was fine with my order.

I am pretty sure that someone got Dell's phone number and is using it to steal credit card information. I got an email from "Dell" saying that my mother ordered all these warranties and her Visa was going to be charged. I check Dell.com and the order number didn't exist. I also tried to respond to the email (the "Dell worker" left her email address), and the email got bounced back as it wasn't a real mailbox. The email also said that this warranty was for an Inspiron, which was purchased under MY name, not my mother's. My mother had ordered an XPS for my brother. I am worried because this email had my address and home phone number on it, so I am hoping that Dell didn't get hacked or anything. In anycase, don't answer. Call Dell yourself and ask to speak to the fraud department. They will tell you if Dell was actually calling, and why.

It is Dell Sales.  Dell and my credit card company each wanted to verify that my computer purchase was legit.  See the link below which lists all of Dell's numbers.
