This and some other unknow number calls at all times, especially in the middle of the night. I also get FAX calls at 2 and 4 am but not sure if its from this same service.

DO NOT enter you phone number to be taken off their list. You will be taken off THAT list, but your number will then be sold to other telemarketers and you'll just get even more calls!...thats been my exerience.

I called back just as Berry said and I was prompted through an automatic menu to have my number removed.  It said my request to have my number removed would be processed within 24 hours.....crossing my fingers.

I received the call during a business lunch. I didn't answer. I called the number back. It said in French to press 2 for French. I did not push anything and 3 seconds later I was told "goodbye." Due to this obviously being a telemarketer I do not plan on calling them back again. Is everybody who is getting called located in Canada?

We get this number coming up at least once a day at our office, and when answered always a dead line or a click.  Unfortunately, we have an answering service so even if we opt to not answer these calls, it stills understands the number is active.  I've tried the number before and have tried to have our number deleted from their database, but within a few weeks it started up again.

    They are:

    Gemma Communications
    Corporation
    Toronto Office
    700 Lawrence Ave West
    Suite #375
    Toronto, Ontario
    M6A 3B4
    Telephone # 416-256-1800
    Fax # 416-256-6499
    toronto@gemmacom.com

    Gemma Communications
    Corporation
    Montreal Office
    425 Boul. De Maisonneuve O/W
    Suite 400
    Montreal, Quebec
    H3A 3G5
    Telephone # 514-807-1800
    Fax # 514-807-7488
    montreal@gemmacom.com

If we knew who they were doing their "market research" for we would definitely never do business with them.  How sad when people don't bother doing their own research anymore, to the point of annoying potential clients.

    Argh!

They called me this morning. I didn't answer, they didn't leave a message.

Yesterday, I got a call from another # linked to Gemma. I called it back and requested my number be taken off their calling list. Only, when you really listen to the message, it says they'll remove you "for this campaign"... So I take that to mean that even if they stop calling you about Company ABC, they can still call for Company XYZ!

So.... DON'T request your number be removed! Then they just know its active :-(

Not AGAIN!  Once a day, at various times of the day, morning noon and night...at an OFFICE no less.  Tried their remove from list feature, let's hope that's the end of it, at least from THIS number.

Now we know who they are, (see po'd's reply), can we sue them or disturb them in a way? Is there some laws we can call? Is there a advocate reading this can answer us?

I ask that because it seems obvious they're not legit. They give calls that they don't even answer. It can't be legal or is it?

I personally believe these companies exist to wait our cell phone minutes...especially people using prepaid cards that charge per minute.

I just received a call from these guys, and like wynton, when I said hello, there was no reply.  I said hello again, and still no answer.  Finally, I just said good-bye and hung up.

Ok - to all of you above and anyone coming across this forum in future...
    Please note the following:

#1) Do NOT EVER call back to any kind of "number removal service" that is offered by ANYONE - those are specifically designed not to REMOVE your number but merely to confirm it exists so that they can add you to a list of confirmed #s to sell to other marketing companies. So PLEASE do not let them know your number is functional by calling from it to get it removed. As a previous contributor mentioned, calling these companies for removal is like answering spam - it just guarantees you'll be bothered more.

#2) Don't waste your time with the CMA - membership in the Canadian Marketing Association is strictly VOLUNTARY anyway - and so is compliance with its so-called code of conduct. Any Joe Blow can set up a telemarketing operation in this country and Joe Blow need not ever even acknowledge the existence of (much less belong or conform to!) the CMA and its code. And even removing yourself is not permanent - it is only for something like a 3 year term - after which member companies can come roaring back to bother you again!

#3) The real problem here in Canada is the TOOTHLESS CRTC (Canadian Radio &  Telecommunications Commission) which is supposed to determine what is and is not allowed with telemarketing calls, fax broadcasting, caller ID rules,  etc. Unsolicited calls and faxes are a HUGE and expensive problem in this country but unless *YOU* write to the PM & your own MP (and better yet, to the leaders of the opposition parties etc.) you will NEVER see action taken  on fixing this problem - because in Canadian politics it's the squeakiest wheel that gets the grease. So make some squeaks! Please, I urge you to write to your MP - even by email - it only takes a few minutes to make your views known. It seems we are too passive in Canada about our rights being trampled on and yet too lazy to make the effort to defend ourselves. Writing enough personal letters DOES get legislation changed in this country, so if this issue affects YOU, please write to your MP demanding an end to unsolicited marketing calls and faxes of any kind at any time.

#4) Every time you get a call from the specific company mentioned in this thread (Gemma Communications), do what I do: call back their OFFICE # (make sure you dial *67 first to shield your own number!!!) at LEAST 20x per day for about a week. And always just let the person who answers deal with dead air for several seconds before you hang up. It's immensely satisfying.

#5) One more thing - if you ever pick up a call accidentally or out of curiosity that you suspect is telemarketing or that behaves like telemarketing (weird silences at the beginning of the call etc.) just start pressing any one number button on your phone (personally I like the # "5"!) and keep pressing steadily and as rapidly as you can - up to 2 minutes if you can sustain it. Often, though not always, this beeping going back from your phone to theirs defeats whatever kind of dialer is being used at the other end and often you do not hear from that source again.

In the days of usenet, a group of us used to leave the offending numbers with a call me. The messages contained things like, I'm looking to buy "x" product, I'm looking to get "x" service, etc (in hundreds of groups viewed by 1000's of people). These companies would be harassed up the wazoo! When a company was extremely aggravating, we would also leave messages in the less desirable groups full of pervs, and let them harass these companies, thinking they were actually calling "children" (if you get the picture). It kept the pervs busy harassing the company and leaving the children alone. I have no fricken respect for these damn companies who have no fricken respect for us.

The only people that don't bother me are Snail mail spammers, I get some satisfaction knowing that they actually spent some time, money and energy to get me their offer.

As to this BS, I decided to call up the head office, each time displaying the 1-800-395-8813 on their call display, and when they hung up, I just called them right back. Over 200 times and counting. I wish everyone had the power I do.

PPS - In today's world here's what you can do, call the head office, get the name of the secretary, then leave a youtube video with the number of their head office, and a picture of a hot girl (get your wife or girlfriend to do the audio) looking for a date, and watch the fun start. We are the new warriors, this harassment BS has to stop and the only way to stop it is to fight back. Good luck.
