- mary replies to DR. D| 32 repliesNo, it's not a scam. Someone in jail who is trying to talk to you must first call collect like this, to request you put money on their calling account. You can't call from a detention jail without having some money on your account--it's like .87 cents a minute. I know. I have to respond to this automated voice every time my friend needs to connect with a human being on the outside, but only if their deposit account has been depleted with calls.
- Mary replies to DR.D| 1 replyOf course you wouldn't just do it if you didn't already know the someone who has been incarcerated. They usually can get a free call for one minute to alert you of the situation. Or you'll know some other way. And it is a legitimate way of putting it on the acct. Though their are other ways too.
- Mary replies to towwii| 2 repliesYou also have to be patient because they only have a few minutes to make the call, and they never know WHEN they can make it. Other people are waiting in line. And It's always up to the deputy on the floor, when they can get out of a cell to make the calls. And sometimes you set up an account online, and it doesn't go through immediately, and you wonder, why isn't it available? But it becomes available eventually...the system is not easy, and you DO feel like it's inefficient and nuts.
- Maria MastonI got a collect call at 8:40 A.M. ON 08-21-13 concerning someone in a correctional facility, did not accept. I do not want any more calls from this number.
- Caller: Do not know
- been there done thatwhat if you had already set up an account is this the number that comes up when the incarcerated calls you
- hankIts a prepaid calling company inmates use to contact certain numbers (ie boyfriend mother father ect..) normally not used to call people who dont previously know they've gone to jail... laurel is correct, the inmate would have to have the number memorized or wrote down to call once they've been moved from holding to population.. if uve previously set up an account and did not use the full amount, the remainder of money in the account is kept after 90 days in which case you would need to set up a new account. deposits in increments of 25$ by visa or martercard check cards accepted.. they charge 5$ per connection and something like 27c a min for a max of 15 min... its excessively expensive and stupid... they should all burn in hell for charging that much...
- Caller: pre-paid inmate services
- miserable| 7 repliesdudes its a LEGIT company that contracts with the jails. i have an inmate friend in a jail. i once put money on an acct 75.00 when he called collect. they charge that acct 25.00 per call.
if you'd bother to call the friggin number back, it asks you to press option 2 to hear your acct balance. the call is linked to the phone number YOU once put money on.
if you have money on it - like i did, they just nag you with calls to put more money on the acct.
if youve never used this service then its one of 2 things - this was the last phone number associated with an acct for an inmate and you have that said number now, OR you or your spouse/GF whatever is accepting calls from an inmate.
bother to investigate fore you yell scam.
idiots. - Whatever| 4 repliesMy son got a call from this number on hid CELL! He knows no one in jail. Regardless what anyone says here, I feel it's a scam. Especially if they are asking for a cc# and other financial info.

- Pat| 3 repliesHow did they get my number? This sucks. No one I know is in jail anymore. Blow me.
- Bob| 8 repliesThis is not a scam. It is a company that provides a calling service to law enforcement agencies nationwide. That's why one number appears to be coming from multiple states. The reason you got a call from this number is because the inmate that tried to call you didn't have money on his/her books to call you with a service that doesn't require you to set up an account to accept a collect call on your mobile device. If it was a scam, they'd make it very easy for you to simply press "1" to accept fake calls. I have an acquaintance in jail that has tried to contact me with this service after running out of money. It's legit.
- LuckieI know a couple people in jail.. that reason being is cause they are related to me.. but nither one of them know my number.. i have two uncles in prison.. & honestly i believe that they are right where they need to be.. i dont wish to have any contact from either one of em.. im alo t happier being away from them.. Im 20 yrs old, i have a fiance & a 3 yr old lil girl.. the last thing i need is for them to come back & mess my life up again.. i do wish to STOP receiving phone calls from any correctional facility & number..
- It is a Scam| 1 replyI am still getting these calls and my son has been out of jail for 3 days.
- Mark| 1 replyI have received a call from this number a few times. I decided to pick up the call and listen. The recorded voice was a lady, gave me the option to for Spanish. Basically, she said that someone tried to calling me collect, but my number was not set up to receive collect calls. To enable this so I can receive collect calls, I needed to call or go to a website (sorry, I didn't write it down and I forget the URL) so I could give them a credit card number so I could receive "these" collect calls.
- Dylan B| 1 replythis number called me at work. it is very annoying that someone can get access to my number and keeo calling me. Its not jail i know two friends in jail and they both get visited by me and i get calls rom them and NOT FROM THIS NUMBER! it is a major scam!!!

- DeborahIts a scam they wanted my credit card no,
- Caller: 1-800-483-8314
- Carol R.| 4 repliesThe scammers at 1-800-483-8314 showing up as unavailable- just called my house and left a message about an "offender" and setting up an account...blah blah blah.
I don't answer 1-800 and especially ones that say "unavailable."
A for the ones on here saying it's legit- that is pure B.S!
They obviously work as telemarketers for those scammers. One person on here wrote how they are charged $5.00 just for initiating an incoming collect call, plus an exorbitant cost per minute!!
Also some scammers on here who try to justify as to why these telemarketing scammers are calling and why you need to set up an "account" enabling inmates to call you collect- since that is the only way to reach you....
that also is pure B.S!
Inmates do not need to have the person they are calling collect to- set up an account. Inmates just pick up a payphone and call collect, the person they are calling is informed of who the inmate is and what prison they are located and calling from.
You also get the option to hear how much that collect call costs per minute, options to block that person, etc....
The only way, and legit way to receive a collect call from an inmate is when they call you direct from where they are incarcerated.
Prisons use a particular legitimate phone company that handles multiple in-state prisons. Different states use different phone companies, but all of them are a fraction of the cost of what 1-800-483-8314 charges! Plus, you are NEVER asked to provide any information- the charges are applied to your phone bill, as it should be.
Does anyone pay for their phone services through an unknown business, and use their credit card??!! Hell no!
Total scammers preying on clueless not so bright people, who fall for telemarketing predators all the time.
People will never learn- and the ones who are aware of all kinds of scams, are the ones that suffer having to put up with these intrusive scamming calls!- Caller: Unavailable
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Notfooled replies to Bob| 4 repliesObviously you work for them or why else would you be on this site wondering WHO IS CALLING, and to report these telemarketing scammers!
That goes for all of the ones posting here that claim 800-483-8314 is legit!
People incarcerated only need to use the Prison's payphone and make a legit collect call. The Prison's subcontract legitimate phone companies that handle collect callings.
These legit telephone companies charge a fraction of the price, do not ask for any credit card info, nor personal information. The phone service provided for the prison's payphones, also announce WHO the inmate is that is calling collect, what prison the call is coming from, the name of their phone company, and choices to end the cal, block the call, and the cost of the call!
That is the only legitimate method that is used by legitimate phone companies who handle jails and Prisons payphones.
Phone charges are charged to your phone- doesn't that make sense!!?? Why in the world would one be charged to ones credit card?? Makes no sense. No need to set up an account. If a person only has a cell phone- then tough luck! Get a land-line if you're so desperate to communicate with the incarcerated collect caller! - NicoleI recently received a similar call (from a different number/system) from someone who really was in jail in the LA area – the collect call account setup was legit, but the inmate was able to record their name so I knew who was calling. The call I received from the number above did not provide a name or jail location, so I am inclined to believe that this is a very clever scam set up to closely imitate an actual collect calling system used by jails/prisons...
- CynthiaYes it is a scam! We had this scam a couple of years ago here in Texas from the CountyJail....
- Caller: 8004838314
- lyndaI recieved a call from the 800 483 8314 number. If someone I know got themselves in jail I don't want to talk to them! They are responable for their own actions. So let them set awhile and maybe have time to think what they have done.
- Caller: jail
