I answered the phone and heard a recording.  I was in a noisy area but it said it was someone who tried to call my number collect from _________________ correctional facility  (I did not catch the name) and that it could not go through and if I wanted to set up an account....................

I immediately hung up the phone.

I don't know anyone who is in jail .

I am going to figure out how to block this number

If they don't want everyone to think it is a scam they should at least tell you who is trying to get in touch with you before you give a number for a credit card.

if the call is legit, the person incarcerated will get one free call to you with will include there name in their own voice . then  they'll ask you to set up an account,  this # is bogus

I got a call from this number today.  I googled it, and found this website: https://www.offenderconnect.com/portal.  It helps you to help out your friends and family members that are incarcerated.  I was like I don't know anybody that's incarcerated.

Heads up people! This IS a SCAM and the people posting that it isn't. They are the ones who want u to take their calls so they can screw you! Yes, I am sure they ARE inmates. BUT they are not your family or friends (go ahead and except one of the calls and find out you will regret it). Just some guy trying to get your money and sucker u into a bunch of pity [***] and feel sorry for them!!! If you want the calls to stop. You have to call the number and keep pushing "0" until you get a LIVE person. At that point you can ask them to block your number. Trust me though, they will find another one to call from. This number is the 4th one I have had to block 800-483-8314. It's the same name every time that calls collect...Jerry! I have NO family named Jerry or any friends named Jerry! A friend of mine has been having the same issue. But she was brave enough to take the call cuz she was sick of it too and want to tell the person to stop it. She found out real fast that it was NOT a friend or family member. The guy just wanted to talk and he needed money and was hoping she would be kind enough to help out. How damn pathetic can u be!!! Plus, she got a HUGE charge on her phone bill for taking the call!!! You have to let Global Tel Link know that you want the calls to stop and they WILL put up a block!

I have to agree that it's a scam. My brother is currently in our local jail system unfortunately and he always calls from the same number, not to mention I just re-upped my balance with Global Tel Link so there is no reason for this number to call me...which they have never called me before.  I think the post above me probably accurately describes what is going on here. I've been dealing with my brother in and out jail and this just doesn't seem right. I will not be giving this number my cc number to talk to this 'offender'

I got a call similar to this one last night from a totally different number, and the people commenting on that number were also debating on whether it was from a prison or not, but apparently last night's number is a well known number that is often used by default when someone calls from a prison.

Either way, I don't care. I've gotten 21 random "scam" calls since I got this new number in mid August this year. I don't know what the last jerk did with this number, but I can't help but feel like I'm screwed. Person who owns the plan insists I don't need to change my number, though.

Just don't answer the calls, no matter what. No reason to.

    IT's a SCAM.
But for those who believes it is some poor ,pittiful inmate stuck in jail ,,who is just lonely ,,and needs someone to talk to,,wrong number etc.
Then you give them your credit card info,,and you call and talk to them and make them happy ,,and maybe they will stop calling the rest of us ..

In my search I came across instructions for GTX(?) on a .SC.GOV website, which is probably a South Carolina government website.  So the service may not be a scam, but whoever is using it (or abusing it) is trying to find a SUCKER that will fall for putting money into the account.  I know nobody in prison, and I've been getting junk calls for a week from these convicts and I haven't been answering any of them because they were not toll-free numbers.  But they left a recording on my voice mail saying something about some prison legal regulations, or whatever.  At least I haven't been billed for any calls yet.  I decided to answer this this toll-free call to find out what it was all about.  Just another damn ROBO-CALL!  Wasting my time!

The number does belong to Global Tel Link...I looked up the company on Google and they appear to be a legit outfit..    But, they seem to be calling a whole lot of people who don't know anyone in jail.   Just look at the complaints here on 800notes.   If they aren't the scammers, then I'm suspicious that there are people  using the service to scam...  Or perhaps the number is being spoofed...

They're in my call reject list now.....

Got a call from this number on New Years Day! Call came into my mobile phone. Caller left no voice mail.

Didn't recognize the number so I searched 800 Notes. It seems like several County Jails are having similar issues (scams) like one of the responders listed below.

How do I get the calls to stop?  I keep receiving phone calls from (800) 483-8314, and I just let them go to voicemail.  But it's annoying that I keep receiving calls.  Does anyone know how to make the calls stop?
