These people are trying to collect a debt (of around $1400) from 27 years ago!!!  Yes, that's right----TWENTY SEVEN YEARS AGO!!!!
I have explained to them at least 7 or 8 times that this debt was included in a divorce settlement that awarded our house to my spouse, but also made the spouse responsible for this and a couple of other debts.  I have even given them the information  of how to contact the ex-spouse, yet still they call me constantly---sometimes up to 8 times a day, sometimes only 2 or 3 times a week, but they don't stop and it has been going on for over 2 years!

I asked them why and they would not answer my question, just wanted to know my address.
I hung up after 30 seconds

This is a debt collector in Western New York, known haven for criminals posing as debt collectors.  One thing is certain, they have made first contact and they are now required to do the following:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

This number has called me several times, and always ask if I am familiar with an address (they use different addresses every time). When I refuse to answer their question, they get very rude and hang up on me. I called another number on their website and spoke with an agent, and she said my number was not in the system. So either they are lying, because I threaten them to file a complaint with the BBB, or another scam company is using their name and phone number to get private information from people.
I do not have any outstanding debt, so it does not make sense for a debt collector to be chasing me

This was not a legitimate agency. The best thing to do is start out not trusting these guys. As soon as you get a call like this , file a complaint with the federal trade commission & consumer finance protection. The reason is once they are on "watch" for deceptive practices even if it is a legitimate claim they must handle in a professional matter or run the risk of a big fine that will shut them down. They must send you some sort of an invoice I writing and give you time to respond. You should be able to validate that they have a legitimate mailing adress & a secure web portal that you can make a payment. My suggestion is the second you receive any kind of debt collector call - get the name of the agency, the person you spoke to, the number and file a complaint right away. If you do then they HAVE play by the rules. You also have to understand did they but this debt and for how much? If so then whatever they say the outstanding bill is - pay only 10% of it. File a complaint right away then they have to play by the rules or they go out of business !!

Easy solution: next time they call add their number to your contact list and then block it. The calls will go to voice mail but your phone won't ring.

Got a recorded call from "Miss Johnson" at Emery Group, says she's a debt collector. They're just trying to see who they can scare into sending them money. Don't be a sucker.

I see you work for a "collection agency". These "people" get the bad name for deserving it. You don't call someone wanting there info without telling them what it's about. Also, you send a letter to said person with the info on what the "debt" is about, you don't start calling & harassing them. Lastly, if no one at the number they are harassing has got anything on credit, it's a scam. Have a nice day

First, you are to notify by mail if someone owes a debt, not call & harass them. Second, you do have to let the person know what the debt is for. Anyone with common sense knows you NEVER give your info over the phone. Lastly, make SURE THE PERSON TOU ARE HARASSING OWES A BILL. Ever heard of identity theft? People do report it to the proper authorities you know. Have a nice day

I got a call from that number a short time ago. I knew I shouldn't of answered the phone but I did, and regretted! If it was a legitimate debt collector wouldn't they mentioned your full name? The caller's phone volume was a little low and when I asked her to repeat herself a couple of times, she mumbled something and hung up! I called back to confront her or whoever and it hung up "this call may be monitored..."
