You can go to the IRS website and it list all of the collection vendors they use . So anyone calling can say they are from performance They have called me several times . You also can go on IRS website and check you returns for the last 7 years and it will show if you have a tax bill

Yes, we'd love to. If this outfit calls & you haven't already been made aware that you're in arrears to the IRS then they're calling in error or you're being SCAMMED. The IRS mails lots of letters. People KNOW when they owe the IRS. No one finds out that they owe the IRS with a 'phone call. NOT EVER!

It is definitely a scam. I called the IRS after receiving this call and she told me that they will never call you before sending several notices in the mail.

Called my cell. Didn't recognize the number. An app on my cell identified the number as a 'Telemarketer'. I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. They're now blocked. Unknown

I researched PERFRECOV as a private debt collector and found that their name/phone number is not on the list of the four approved Private Collection Agencies:  https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-business ... debt-collection.   I believe this is a scam.

It is legit - IRS Uses performa recovery to collect now. So if you have back taxes this is the company they use

Except if someone owes back taxes they will get lots of mail before they start getting these phone calls so they wouldn't be surprised to get the call.
By the way, since you know to whom this number belongs why did you look it up? Do you often look up known numbers? If so, why?

The IRS does not call.  They do however use a collection agency.  The IRS will mail you a letter letting you know that they are transferring you to a collection agency.

Go to www.irs.gov to verify the name and address of their office. And btw it’s “Performant Recovery, Inc.”

You should provide a little more information when reassuring others about what the IRS does when it involves debt collectors.
    Quote:
Private collection agencies will not ask for payment on a prepaid debit, iTunes or gift card. Taxpayers will be informed about electronic payment options for taxpayers on IRS.gov/Pay Your Tax Bill. Payment by check should be payable to the U.S. Treasury and sent directly to IRS, not the private collection agency.

    Quote:
    Stay Vigilant Against Scams
The IRS urges you to be on the lookout for unexpected scam phone calls from anyone claiming to be collecting on behalf of the tax agency.

The IRS will do everything it can do to help you avoid confusion and ensure you understand your rights and tax responsibilities when it assigns your case to a private collection agency. This is particularly important in light of continuing scams where callers impersonate IRS agents and request immediate payment.

Even with private debt collection, you shouldn’t receive unexpected phone calls from the IRS demanding payment. When people owe tax, the IRS always sends several collection notices through the mail before making phone calls.

Got a call from this # a little while ago, but didn't answer because I don't answer strange #'s. I can't swear it's Performant Recovery, but I have recently received a letter from the IRS regarding my legitimate debt to them. They said they transferred the debt to Performant and, a few days ago, I received a letter from Performant. Here's what I found on the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-business ... debt-collection

Yes the IRS does use collection agencies, depending on the amount and age of the past due tax. . Kayla is misinformed.

I will also add that even though the IRS will use a debt collection agency to help them collect back taxes
, I would still make payments directly to the IRS and not the collection agency.  Here is a link from the Post that refers to this a bit. :
