- gina replies to bob from the IRS| 1 replyYes they do. They just started to use collection agency's, the I.R.S has the list of the ones they use on their website and Performant Recovery is on the list. These people calling are an legitimate debt collection trying to collect on behalf of the I.R.S
- Tygerkat replies to ginaThe IRS may use a debt collector but you will receive lots of mail from the IRS before it ever gets to collections. By the way, why did you look up this number if you already know to whom it belongs?
- KP replies to Kayla| 2 repliesYes they do use a collection agency! I received a debt collection statement from the collection agency with the exact amount of back debt. Verified with a relative who works for IRS they are using debt collection agency
- BigA replies to KPSo you receive a "statement"? Not a collection letter? Also, you received nothing from the IRS prior to this?
- Tygerkat replies to KPOkay, but did you verify with the actual IRS that this is a real debt you owe them?
- Eugene replies to SharlaSorry, it is a scam.
The IRS does not use the telephone to recover debts. Instead they would freeze your bank accounts at the bank after sending a written notice to the person involved. - DebThis number is not the same number that is on the IRS website. The website states that Performant's number is 844-807-9367 not 844-206-7853.
- Caller: Didn't answer
- Williams replies to KaylaYes, thanks to Obama, they now use a collection agency.
- MTLCollection Agency hired by IRS to collect unpaid taxes. Acted like they were IRS agents, when they are really just scammy collections rats.

- JayI believe this is legit. Called but ignored but after seeing some comments here I got worried and called back and a Lady picked up, I asked her why they were calling this number and she asked which number so I gave it to them she said she was looking for someone named Karin and I told her that there is no Karin that this is the wrong number. She said she will remove this number from their system. She was very kind.

- Steph replies to KaylaThey Do use a collection agency. But you still shouldn't give personal info over the phone. It's common sense.
- unclryry replies to KaylaActually they do use a collection agency I have an agreement with them it all through a agency
- GateKeeperDefinitely not a legit call.
Called to tell me that I owed taxes.
"From when?"
"From 2018"
"I didn't file taxes in 2018"
"That's why we're calling."
"I'm not an American citizen, and I didn't live or work in United States in 2018. I don't have to file taxes."

- Jen replies to Kayla| 2 repliesJust FYI, the IRS does, in fact, use collection agencies now. I received notice from them stating that they had turned my account over to a collection agency which will act on their behalf, as if they are the IRS. They will make payment arrangements, etc. The notice cited some law that was passed a couple years ago for this change.
They did not specify what collection agency mine was turned over to, but did state that one can go on the IRS webpage to find a list of authorized agencies which I have not done yet.
Just got a call from this number, so I'm assuming they are mine, but will check with the IRS before I return the phone call. - BigA replies to JenAny debt collector working for the IRS must follow the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act which includes sending out a dunning letter within 5 days of first contact and honoring written debt validation letters sent to them by you.
- MeThey called my daughter's phone looking for my husband's ex lol
- Caller: Performant Recovery Services

- Bear328 replies to KaylaOn the contrary, Performa is a collection agency for the IRS. How do I know? I have letters from them and the IRS on my table. Why'd I look up the number? I googled it for my husband since he's too busy to do so, and it's a new number to us.
