I got a letter from the IRS saying that they DID give my debt to a collector, do you think it’s fake? I’m not answering them anyways, I refuse to pay anything unless it’s in writing.

This is a IRS Collection Scam. IRS does not hire collection agencies to collect tax debt. The IRS will waste more time garnish your wages, levy bank accounts than fork over more money to hire a 3rd party to collect your tax debt. The IRS must send you a letter if they are going to move forward with collections and they send this by certified mail. The IRS only calls you directly from their offices if you have a working phone number.

Performant does not have the right to collect tax debt. The iRS only does this. No one else. Do not answer, do not give out your SSN. Anyone can do a recorded line just to scam you.

Do not answer. Call IRS to confirm you owe debt. I just did with this call and they stated its a scam call and only the IRS Collection department enforces collection activity which mostly is garnishment, levy or lien on property

So it seems that they are a legit company coming from irs.gov website: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-business ... debt-collection

These tax debts are more towards people who own businesses or self employed. If you are a regular tax payer owed taxes from income taxes than this is not legit. They also stated if they ask for SSN right off the bat it is a scam. You don't give out a SSN without them announcing who they are and what they are trying to do.

    Irs does use collection company
They do turn past due taxes over to a collection service. I don't know when they started doing it but I know they do. I don't know if this is that company or not though.

Actually,  for debts more than 36 months old and less than  $5000 they do use a 3rd party collection agency.

Looks like you know all about back taxes since one of those outfits used this phone number to call you.  There certainly would not be any other reason for you to be here responding to a post that is over a year old.
