The FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf governs the art of debt collection by third-party collectors and is not specific to the type of loan like "Federal backed college loans" or "private loans". As for "written information and  reference locations concerning these laws and practices as it applies to lending institutions", Google is your best friend to ask on the internet.

"One has to wonder whether this may be a phishing expedition to drum up new business."

No wondering is necessary.  They are doing just this.

They also leave vague messages without naming the person for whom these calls are meant that include threats to 'post account information on facebook.'  They also instruct the listener to 'check their Twitter accounts and email.'  None of this is legal, including unloading all of this onto the answering machine of someone who is not at the phone number which they are dialing - they consistently 'pursue' the wrong person.

They're fishing.  Not legal, certainly not moral.

Nelnet needs to get their information BEFORE they make that call.  They know this, but they're sloppy.  If those 'harassement calls' don't work, well, DUHHHH!!!!!

    Go suck an egg, shill.

Wrong.  It's true that the government can expedite aspects of loan collection like garnishing your income tax returns, but their goons have to follow the rules which means that when they call you, they can't threaten you with anything that they can't legally carry out, they have to tell you who they are and why they are calling, and they HAVE to follow up that initial phone call with something in writing via the USPS.  No ifs, ands or buts.  I don't care if it's God-Come-Down-In-A-Basket trying to collect some mone from you.  ALL collectors have to follow the rules.

To read some of the posts in this thread, you'd think that Nelnet was a spawn of Mother Theresa...
    but read here:

    http://mrnumber.com/1-855-720-8905

A Web User says:  "called my 8 year old's phone..."

That pretty much says it all.  If they can't put it into writing, they have no reason to call, especially if they have resorted to cold calling 8 year olds.  For shame.

"They are not harrassing because they are in compliance to the Fair Debt Collections Practivces Act."

If they are making back-to-back calls to the same number, they are NOT in compliance with the FDCPA.  Get your facts straight.  It makes no difference who they are calling for.  Debt collectors have to follow the rules, regardless of who they collect for.

These people have been calling my phone number for weeks.  When they leave messages, it's for people I never heard of, and I've had my number for 10 years.   I called them back and told them to stop calling me, but only got accused of being the person they were trying to reach (I am not).  I recently registered with the nat'l do-not-call list, and now I get calls, sometimes back-to-back, but they no longer leave messages.

Is there anything I can do, short of getting a new phone number?  They are now calling at least 5 times a day.

Not true.  I did call them back, as they were calling two different people, neither of them connected to me or at my number (which I've had for 10 years), and now they just call and hang up when my answering machine picks up.

Calling for Raul Vega every single day of the week- says to check email and facebook.  I have had this number 30 years, I do not have any idea who they are trying to reach.  I left a message to please stop calling twice - to no avail

Nelnet appears to be on of the most corrupt of the "student loan" corps.    Even their Wikipedia page reads like a rap sheet of misconduct.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelnet

They have  along history of reneging on promises, using loopholes in laws to fleece government programs and greasing the palms of crooked politicians.    Stay far, far away.

No actually it is harassment to harass one adult for another adults debts especially when told they can not be reached at that number. Now days debt collection has become psychological terrorism. If you can't get the person who owes the debt on the phone you try to terrorize their family until they do your job for you. That's called coercion.

I am guessing you work for one of these terrorist organizations.
