As I read thru these posts, I see a lot of people causing themselves unnecessary stress. I deal with people's credit every day, and this is the best advice for dealing with Collection Agencies-
    1) If you intend to pay it, set up a payment plan unless you pay it all at once.
    2) If you have no intention of ever paying off the collection (and you KNOW right now whether or not you will EVER pay it off), then stop talking to the collection agency(s) immediately. Stop trying to play lawyer against them (they have a lot more money to spend on legal battles than you). Don't fall for any of their scare tactics (They cannot do a thing to you other than put it on your credit report). Simply stop talking to them and your credit will rebound much faster.
There's this funny little thing called a DLA (Date of Last Activity)... The longer it has been since that date, the less effect that collection has on your credit score. Except every time you decide to curse the collector for calling your house at 7:30 pm you create ACTIVITY. You make the effect on your credit score like the collection is brand new.
So... IGNORE THEM and your credit score will go back up on its own (provided you are paying your bills now). Mortgage companies don't require you to pay off OLD collections anymore, finance companies don't either. Eventually, the collection account will drop off your report and if it doesn't... Who cares because it will be so old that nobody will give it a second look and it will no long be a factor in your credit score.
If the constant calls from Collectors bothers you, simply call your phone company and have "call screening" added to your line... this is a service that will not allow blocked phone #'s to call you. The caller must say their name, you receive a special ring at home, you listen to the automated message which includes the caller's name, and you either accept or decline the call. You never have to talk to a pushy collector. Most automated dialers these days never make it to recording a name.
Don't cause yourself the stress of trying to fight collection agencies... It's a game for the collectors to see how mad they can get you (I know, I've been to a Citi Financial Loss Mitigation Call Center before... did a mortgage for the Ops Manager of the center... He had terrible credit... ironic).
Take it or leave it, that's my advice on collection agencies... I speak from experience in dealing with them. :-)

Actually, calling on Saturday and Sunday is not against the law. Also, it's not against the law to call more than once a day as long as they DON'T leave a message. If they leave a message then any calls to that particular number is then classified as harrassment.
According to FDCPA harrassment is defined as without intent. As long as their intentions is the resolve a debt and not to annoy the debtor/borrowe then it's not harrassment.
I've been a collector for well over 10 years and FDCPA/FCRA and so on has been drilled into my head.

    Hi All,

Here is a suggestion, whether you are in debt or not, turn off the ringer to your phone, especially in the bedroom and let your Family and friends know what time to reach you between if needed.

If they aren't to take you to Court, they isn't a thing they can do.

Called me at 8:17 AM on June 5th, 2015.

In line with the FCRA, they can call you up to 8 times a day, as long as they don't leave more than one message or contact per day.  They can keep calling you until they reach you up until that 8th call. There are restrictions keeping them from calling you back to back to make your phone ring for an hour straight- that's harrassment. The allowable hours to call within at 8am to 9pm, and they absolutely permit calls on Saturdays.

person spouting barroom legalese.  The FCRA or Fair Credit Reporting Act has nothing to do with anyone calling anyone over debt.  It has to do with (and imagine that) Fair Credit Reporting.  But hey, if you think I am wrong, then point out the exact section you are referring to.  Here is a copy:  http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/sites/default/fil ... porting-act.pdf
Now the FDCPA has to do with debt collectors calling you, maybe that is what it is called the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act?  Think that might be why.  But again there is noting in that statute that says they are only allowed top call you up to 8 times a day.  Here is that statute in case you would like to actually read it and learn something:  https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/rules/rulemak ... ctices-act-text
