Who The Hell Are These People Calling My Cellphone About A Car Warranty?

We've been getting a lot of emails from people saying that a company is using a robocaller to call their cellphones and pretend that their car warranty is expiring. Too bad that some of these readers don't even have a car. Has happened to you? Do you know who is behind it?

Here is one such email from reader Jamie:

Have you guys heard anything about the telemarketers calling cell phones wanting to sign you up for an extended car warranty?

It is ridiculous the amount I'm getting on both my personal cell phone and work cell phone. I Google the phone number, different each time, and find that others are getting the same calls. They never leave a message and there IS someone there to answer if you choose to talk with someone.

It appears that it doesn't matter if you are on the Do-Not-Call list or ask them to take you off their list, they keep calling.

Have you heard of this?

Yes, in fact, we wrote about AT&T's attempt to sue the people behind these calls, but no one seems to know who they are because they spoof their phone numbers— and the government doesn't seem to care. We also asked the BBB if they knew who was behind this robot army and they didn't. It is a total mystery.

another bsa calling me about car warranty i own all my cars i am in the auto parts business 35 years and i would not let some fly by night scam artist waste my time. this company should call their mothers and find out who there father was instead of calling people

What is your phone service? If everyone here has the same phone service, then this might be something worth looking into. I have AT&T.

I have AT&T too and this number has been calling me every night and morning. I cannot figure out how they got my cell phone #.

getting calls regarding 2nd notice for expired car warranty.  have called on multiple occasions to be put on "do not call" list.  Have been hung up on all occasions.  Now the calls do not show the 866 number, but show "blocked" on the caller id.  calling back now gets a recording that the number is not in service, but it's not the normal system "number is out of order" recording.

I have been getting automated calls stating "your factory warranty is about to expire." I have no extended warranty to expire and I've been getting these calls every so often for several months!

Received a call inbound from the above-mentioned number.
As soon as I get a suspicious call as the 866-209-7845 number,
I immediately put it in my phone book in my cell phone.
I usually mark it "scam" or "nuse" for nuisance call.
I have noted that I get more and more of these type calls
lately.  At any rate marking tips me off not to respond the
next time I get a call.   Someone asked what the purpose of this
site is if no actions are brought against the persons perpetuating
the calls? At least we have a reference to seek the intentions of
the caller.  Someday maybe legal actions will be brought.
I informed one caller via email that I had gotten 14 calls
from them in 1 week.  The calls did stop.  Do not erase the calls
from your memory in your cell (if possible)  That way you
can prove the calls were incoming.  Do not call them back EVER.  Any tiny bit of reinforcement seems to encourage the persistent caller.

My work received this sort of call to an unpublished, generic phone, not someone's office, (no caller ID within our PBX system from outside 'trunk' calls) and my work is NOT an AT&T customer.

This number has called me repeatedly telling me that my vehicle warranty up and action upon my part is necessary or serious financial consequences may partake. I stayed on the line to talk to the person because I have never owned a car and I wanted to be taken off their calling list. They threatened me, she claimed she was just 'doing her job' and that she got my number randomly- things got escalated and she hung up. About 5 minutes later she called back, asked me if I had to pay to use my cellphone during day time hours, then she laughed and put me on hold 'while she went to go get her manager'! She just wanted me on hold so I would have to pay. It was ridiculous! No matter what, they call twice a month.

This outfit is a notorious violator of TCPA laws (robo-calls to cell phones, health care facilities, emergency phone lines, etc.).

They made one call to my cell phone and were informed that they had violated TCPA laws by doing so. I never heard from them again.

The more complaints that are generated, the FASTER they will be shut down.

I have been getting calls from this number for years.  I can't make it stop.  I am going to start escalating my efforts.  This is RIDICULOUS

I get calls from both 866 209 7845 and 909 842 9124 with the exact same message. The 866 209 7845 number appears to have been disconnected but calling 909 842 9124 seems to give you the opportunity to opt out of any future calls.

Using a reverse lookup, the local provider in Ontario, CA is Digicom Services (http://www.digitcom.net) which has a nice little look up tool that shows the following:

When I called this morning they weren't open (East - West Coast time difference). The 866-225-1956 number allows you to leave a message to be removed from their calling list. I'll try a little later the (866) 708-0401 and see if I can talk to a live person.

If anyone else wants to call, I suggest being very polite and making the following two points:

1. Their ANI (CallerID) information is incorrect in listing the 866 number and should be corrected.

2. They are in violation of laws concerning automated calls to cell phones and to numbers on the Do Not Call list.

I make these suggestions so that this company will be corrected. Period. It's not enough for individuals to just have their numbers removed. This company needs to make serious changes in how they operate.

And if by chance this is a 3rd party and not directly involved with making the calls, being polite yet firm will help them find the actual problem.
