Called looking for my mother. Very shady people. I am in accounts receivables and these people are just bottom feeders.  They need to get a real job.

I quit replies to Jim manning
Jim, I promise to never call Virginia again. It's easy to do because I never called her. You, Like Linda Michael, made a fairly common and understandable mistake. You failed to pay attention to what this site is. You did notice one of its functions; to allow us to share our experiences and describe calls from unknown numbers. But, there is nothing most of us can do about stopping any of the calls. Anyone from this caller might not be able to figure out from your post which "Virginia manning" (sic) you mean -- and, thus, stop calling you.

Another function of the site is to offer one another help, so I'll try. I'm no expert, and I sure don't know much, but it seems like one sure way to get them to stop calling you is to tell them how to get in touch with her.

I'll say this as gently as I know how: Your daughter needs to talk to these people. If she legitimately owes the debt, maybe she should consider paying it. Most of them will work out some kind of a deal. If she does not legitimately owe the debt -- or even if she does -- and they are not following the rules, this is the kind of lawsuit some lawyers will take on a contingency fee basis.

I had an experience with one of these debt collectors who was not following the rules. I sued them in small claims, but they took it to the federal level. I called a lawyer I knew, and he got me $1,500 -- and his own fee from them.

I hope you and your daughter can get these people off of your back, and I hope my meager words can give you, if nothing else, hope for the same. Look around on the Internet, and you will find some of the clear steps you can take in dealing with debt collectors.

Not Noel replies to Linda Michael
I've never heard of Noel Anderson, either. Until I read about it just now, I don't think I had heard of this Northstar outfit, either. You apparently figured out this is not their web site, and nobody associated with the site has any chance of getting them to stop calling. I'm basing my guess on this second post of yours.

It does seem a little bizarre that they wouldn't tell you what number they were dialing! I think I would ask the same question, if they were calling about someone I never heard of. I know I ask -- then repeat the number I think I dialed -- any wrong number I get, just to be sure I won't immediately dial the same number and get them again.

Simple common sense and ordinary courtesy are too hard for some people to cope with.

Now, to your understanding of the national Do Not Call registry: Unfortunately, it only has limited application. Debt collectors are not included in the few callers who are required to adhere to it. Politicians, survey takers, and charities are also exempt, and can call you all they want, even if you are on the list.

Make sure you have the right ones, first. Then, explore correspondence through the mail as you reach out to your elected representatives, seeking to get the law to cover more people. Since THEY don't want to be covered, and we're up against lobbyists and deep pockets, neither politicians nor those groups who manipulate the system will likely be forced to observe the DNC.

You might want to consider a registered (Certified will do.) letter, too. Send it to the folks you are getting the calls from.

I realize you'll probably never see this, but someone else might come along who hasn't read this same kind of information, posted earlier, that you missed and so it's here, fresh, for them to find.

    Fed up
I blocked these clowns months ago and looking at my phone log they still call three to five times a week. It started with local calls pestering me about someone with the same last name who I never met that owed money. It got to the point where they said they were going to send County investigators to my house to locate this person. They made it sound like they would have a warrant aND would go through my house. I laughed because I retired from the courts and never once in my 17 years did someone get a warrant for a civil debt. It doesn't work that way.  Well right after that, those calls stopped and Northstar started calling. I blocked them immediately but I guess they don't get the message when the call does not go through time after time after time

So they kept calling my mother trying to find my friend, how they tied them together I will never know. They seem to be a terrible collection service and honestly I'm pretty sure it's Illegal to hunt people down like that do. They need to stop harassing us for a debt that my friend didn't even have.

You will need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation (by law they have to go back to the original creditor to prove you owe the debt), cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter (this will be the best money that you have ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt, and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/

Everything else you need to know follows including at least two or more federal and state agencies where you should report their criminal activities.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

received a call from this place with some rude, rude woman who claims i owe for a loan. no documentation can be provided. gave me a number to call and i phoned them only to be told they have my name and social but cannot provide me documentation of loan documents. this place claimed they sent me mail and emails of which is a complete lie. asked the so say creditor to get the manager on the phone because there is no way if you are the creditor you wouldnt have paper documents that can be mailed and sent electronically. asked for a manager. they kept me on hold and never returned. while waiting the rude lady from this company called me back saying youre calling them now asking for documentation. i stated i have nothing on my bank statement from this place, no email to be searched or anything. she told me have my identificationn when served. first off no one can legally show up to your job or home without a law enforcement and documents. a scam for sure!
