I'd been avoiding calls from this number for weeks, but I was preoccupied with something else when it rang this time, and I made the mistake of picking it up. After a careful analysis of my account, they were pleased to offer me a contract with even better terms than the old one. They were going to increase my minutes (even though I never even use half the minutes that I'm now signed up for). They were going to upgrade me to a new phone that doesn't come close to the same features and quality of my two-year-old Razr. Through all this droning on, I filled in the pauses with uh-huh. Suddenly I heard her say "OK - give me a moment while I write up your order." I said "Hold it - I didn't order anything." She said "Yes I understand. I'm just confirming your renewal." I told her I didn't renew anything. I finally got her to repeat that she understood I didn't agree to anything and didn't renew anything, and then I hung up. Now I need to start watching my bills more closely - and pay closer attention to the caller ID before I answer the phone.

Have been getting calls for the past 2 weeks. I never answer. I have called the number back from my work line and the person does answer Verizon. I have had verizon for about 10 years. If this really is them, this may be enough to get me to switch to a new provider.

Got call from 866-259-3883, but they hung up before I could answer.  Called back.  It felt to me like a Fraud/Phishing Expedition so I hung up.  I called The REAL VzW at *611 and got Tech Support.  I hit the jackpot - a very savvy young woman who had herself experienced attempted ID Theft (as I likewise have) took my call.  She had access to a list of phone numbers known to be used by VzW - it is NOT on the list.  There are legitimate 3rd parties whose #s might be missing from that list, so she called it herself.  The result: she herself felt the Fraud/Phishing Expedition sensation.  She said she would turn it over to their fraud department.
I have programmed the number into my phone with the label "FRAUD - DO NOT ANSWER!"  If you know how to, you can also give it a distinctive ring tone...  (something ominous, the sound of a hissing snake perhaps?)
If you want to call them and play games, it can be a hoot, but for God's sake don't give them any authentic personal info.
Re. SSN - the young woman from the real VzW told me that they can ONLY see the last 4 digits, even though the whole number IS in the system.  ANY person who ever asks for anything more than the last 4 digits is a bonafide LIAR & THIEF!

not true . . . . all of my numbers have been on the do-not-call registry for 2+ years now and they still call.  They get around this because we're already a customer.
I never answer the 866 calls and they never leave a message.
Numbers most recently received ("missed") are 866-259-3883 and 866-831-8125

I just received a call from 866-259-3883. When I answered, there was no one on the other end. I have had significant problems with Verizon in terms of quality of service, contract anomalies, shoddy equipment, and high pressure to upgrade instead of honoring the insurance contract. Torturing me after 8 pm for a contract extension would be adding insult to injury. I will let you know if they call back.

Too bad federal regulations do not require achieving a reasonable quality of service prior to allowing Verizon to gobble up smaller companies or to expand its customer base.

By the way, this site is a wonderful public service.

I was just able to get a response when I called 866-259-3883. The recipient of the call identified herself as part of Verizon Wireless. I requested removal of my name from the call list. She had access, without my giving her any information, to my account information based upon my phone number. I received a response similar to earlier posts - it may take up to 30 days to remove my number. I was referred to Verizon Wireless's website and "Legal Notices".

I suggest that anyone who continues to have problems with Verizon Wireless phone solicitations, or anyone else's, to create a form complaint with a blank section for the nature of the complaint. Send a notice to the FCC and every other agency you think may have an interest and or jurisdiction including your state's consumer fraud divisions. sometimes in the Attorney General's Office. Eventually, governmental scrutiny may be triggered.

First off you people are a bunch of idiots....comments to "I get these calls every day and I never answer my phone" dont you think if you answer your phone and tell them to take you off the list they will stop, the answer is yes. Avoiding the calls does not work... HELLO.... Secondly the national do not call list does not cover places you have established a business relationship with. It seems like pointless bitching is what the american population is good at, heres an idea if you dont like them calling, tell them to stop and know it takes up to 30days to take a name off the list due to the fact that they are circulating files. LETS GET A LITTLE SMARTER PEOPLE and stop BITCHING FOR ONCE!!!

Verizon Spanked by FCC; Can't Harass Ex-Customers
As posted on June 23, 2008 on http://blog.wired.com/

Verizon can no longer email, call or pester ex-customers after they've signed on with another carrier, according to an FCC order.

The FCC, responding to a complaint filed by a slew of cable carriers -- found that Verizon was unfairly using customers' personal information to prevent them from signing up with a competitor, even after they canceled their Verizon service.

Verizon's marketing ploy worked like this: After a subscriber signed on with another carrier, the company was notified of the cancellation, and was expected to port the number as part of the number portability process.

Instead of just complying with the request, Verizon would start aggressively marketing ex-customers in an effort to win them back with new incentives. It seems like a pretty standard practice, but Verizon also sent out a "jeopardy notice" to the other carrier, and stalled on porting the number by coding it as in "conflict," so the carrier had to resolve the conflict before it could begin servicing the new customer.

"We conclude that Verizon is violating section 222(b) of the Act by using, for customer retention marketing purposes, proprietary information of other carriers that it receives in the local number porting process, and we order Verizon immediately to cease and desist from such unlawful conduct," the FCC order said.

It sounds slightly questionable, but FCC Chairman Kevin Martin argued in favor of the practice, suggesting the ban could "thwart competition, harm rural America, and frustrate regulatory parity," he wrote in a statement. "Customer retention marketing is a form of aggressive competition that has the potential to benefit consumers through lower prices and expanded service offerings. Moreover, the cable companies engage in such practices to keep their video customers from switching to other providers," Martin wrote.

It sounded like a lame argument to us -- just because the cable companies "engage in such practices" doesn't make it right.

And unsurprisingly, Verizon also argued that the measure could hurt competition and that it was being unfairly picked on by the FCC.

"This disappointing outcome takes a step back from the march toward full competition. It enables cable companies to lock in TV customers by forbidding Verizon from providing information about better voice services or prices.  It is bad policy that will harm consumers," said Tom Tauke, Verizon executive vice president of public affairs, policy and communications, in a prepared statement.
