    Why are you replying to a 5 year old post?
    And if you know who this "legitimate collection agency collecting for Target, among others" is, what is their legal business name, address, and website?

    Masquerades as a medical assistance company but is really a debt collector.  Note that they have an office in Mumbai, India and Amherst, NY

    MedAssist Web Site indicates that they are indeed a debt collector:  http://medassistsolutions.com/healthcare-solutions/.  It also indicates that it is a subsidiary of firstsource which also indicates that it is a debt collector on their web site:  http://www.firstsource.com/contactus.aspx
    Now claims to be in Illinois:  https://payffs.virtualcollector.net/Contact.aspx

    They list addresses in Mumbai, India, and Amherst, NY, both known havens for criminal debt collection operations.

    BBB page for firstsource lists an accredited business A+ rating, but they have 142 complaints and 1 negative review, meaning that they have paid enough money to the BBB for the high of a rating: http://www.bbb.org/upstate-new-york/business- ... st-ny-47000806/

    Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
    Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

    Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

    Um ....

    I checked the site you mentioned, but it redirects to yet another site ... and the latter is NOT a debt collector!

    They state
    [company name] is a Bermuda insurance company specializing in financial guaranty reinsurance

    So, I have reported your post, as NOT being legitimate!

    That is a different website than you mentioned earlier, so your posts get even more suspicious, since you apparently keep changing your mind about who called or who is "the legal collector".

    To cut through all the fog, I will post my standard warning, just in case some lurkers get this far:

    A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

    The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

    Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via Green Dot, MoneyGram, Western Union, prepaid gift card or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

    IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

    If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:
    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

    ~~~~~~~~
    Please reply to this post, to let us know you read it, or have taken suitable actions to protect yourself.
    I am very  sorry. I didn't call this number back because it wasn't the one Target gave me when they told me my account had been sent to a debt collector. The one they gave me was 888-446-8457.  I'm not honestly trying to mislead anyone; I just made a mistake when I first listed the website.
    If you didn't call them back and it's not the number Target gave you, why would you say it's legitimate?
    the only thing that's legit is the stupid debt. :(  I don't know about this number other than what I found looking it up, but there is a collection agency called First resource advantage, and Target did sell them my account.  http://www.firstsourceadvantage.com is the correct website.
    Because when I was looking this number up,the names NCO Financial  and FirstSource advantage were linked to complaints about it. Also I'm a special kind of stupid.
