- Southern TierEmploys a James or Jim Colby who is under suspicion of stealing social security numbers when he worked at another collection agency. This guy is also a reported "Deadbeat dad" in Erie county, NY state who had legal problems due to not paying court ordered child support. Great place this collection agency.

- Lee replies to Mike HonchoHow much is Scum Corbett paying you for that post?
- joann replies to cjYa, my son and I received calls from him (he did not give his name) and he threatened my son with court and jail time for stealing money. He got a pay day loan and lost his job. We were going to loan him the money until he could get a job until I read several sites where this company CCR & Associates were mentioned.
How have others resolved this? I will be calling our WA state Better Business and Attorney General's Office as well. The number we have for him is 1-888-872-7992 & he is in New York & the recording says they say on the recording they work for a number of lawyers. Their address is 3806 Union Rd. Suite 155; Cheektowaga, NY 12225. It is definitely a debt collection business.
My question is, are debts "debt collectorable" after 8 years in WA state?
Hope my info helps someone. - MFIREBRAND1THREATENED WITH COURT SUMMONS ON 7 YR OLD BILL. CALLED COMPANY ABOUT BILL AND THEY SAID IT WAS WRITTEN OFF AS I OFFERED TO PAY. - MOEAlways remember that only a sheriff or constable can deliver a summons. Debt collectors believe that people who take out payday loans are uneducated and stupid. Collectors try to use all kinds of illegal collection tactics to collect a debt. And never give a collector any type of credit card info or bank acct info over the phone. Always tell them to send you a verification of the debt by mail, email, or fax. If they refuse, then hang up. Debt collectors cant really do much but try to scare the hell out of you. Know you rights under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. Go to www.ftc.gov and check under credit or consumer protection.

- LB| 1 replyI've received 3 calls from this number in the last few days, looking for someone who has the same name as a family member (with the same last name as me), but it's a common enough name and that family member has never shared a phone number with me. They claimed that they wanted to send some documents, they needed to confirm an address, and that this would be the last warning. Much of the message was unclear each time, but the most recent call was from a "Mr. Simpson" who threatened to contact my employer (or the employer of the person they were trying to reach) about the matter. I've gotten similar calls in the past and have ignored them, and that's what I plan to do this time. I'm sure this is a scam but I'm not certain whether the specific scam involved debt collection or some other sort of legal matter.

- BigA replies to panIt is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices: https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general - BigA replies to LBThe last post in this thread was in 2012, so I am not sure if the information would still be correct. What you are describing is a typical "process server' extortion scam. In addition to my other post:
One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money. They often call people that have never even been associated with you because they get erroneous information off of the internet. - mom4Called a relative looking for me. don't know what it is about. said to call or they will contact my employer nothing on my credit report
