- thomas replies to collectorYou seem to believe that if people tell you this is a wrong number you will stop calling. Very funny. Collection agencies like yours are domestic terrorists, and richly deserve whatever scorn and screaming you get.
- Thomas replies to Anonymso you justify your dirty tactics and threats to people by saying "I'm just doing my job"? That defense didn't work at Nuremberg - they were hanged anyway.
- escraps replies to angelThis company calls several times a month. It may very well be a debt collection agency, and normally we would work together with any polite agency to pay off any debt we may have. The fact is this however: we have no debt outstanding. When we first purchased our home two years ago, all our finances were investigated with a fine-toothed comb and any outstanding debt at the time was paid off in order to be eligible for our home loan. So we have all the documentation we need to prove that we have no outstanding debt. The trouble is, this company is implying that there is an outstanding debt from 1985 or there abouts (the year often changes depending on the person I have spoken to). Not only were my husband and I just 16 years of age at the time this company claims the debts were made, there is the small matter of a statute of limitations. I, too, know how one collection agency will sell bogus claims to another collection agency in hopes of finding an unsuspecting consumer who will actually pay hundreds of dollars. This company is not correct in their assumption that we owe on a debt. We have asked for proof of this debt to be mailed or faxed to us for our examination, but for months this company has failed to produce anything concrete.
- not responsible replies to AnonymMy husband (83 and alzheimer patient) received a call from Portfolio Recovery a few months ago. They finally decided that he did NOT owe what they had said and they sent a letter saying the case was dropped. Now just in the last few weeks we are getting calls again and it is for another credit card amount. I finally gave out bank # to pay the amount that was lowered by a few hundred dollars-then I called the credit card company and was told that he did not owe anything. They said I needed the credit card number which I did not have. They also said that Portfolio Recovery Assoc should give us the account number and dates of the charges because if my husband owed anything we would have gotten a bill--which we never received. We did have an account and it was paid off in 2000 and never got another bill from the credit card company--so how does he now come up owing over a thousand dollars????????? go figure!
We went to the bank and stopped payment on the check now we get phone calls two/three times a day. I have drafted a letter telling them this and it is in the mail. They told me interest would be added to the amount every day until it is paid. We have not moved in the last 15 years so a bill would not have gotten lost (maybe one month-but not many months. - Nui replies to ShellThis company is Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC. They are debt collectors and work with a lot of companies, including CitiBank
- chrkrns replies to another collectorWhy all the hostility? Is it your money? One of you idiots calls my 81 year old mother every day, more than once a day, looking for my sister. No one in my family knows where she is. Get over it! If you find my sister, let us know! But in the meantime, quit harassing an 81 year old woman! Sick practices going on with that!
- sick and tired| 1 replyyou do not call relatives and discuss others debts and you can say what you may about paying debts..... did anyone ask you to purchase their written off debt for pennies on the dollar??? did you provide the service?? did you provide the funding??? do you pay the original provider anything other than a few pennies so you can harass people and their families???? Have a nice day!!!
:-) - George Handley replies to DOUHAVEMORALSYou sound like a sincere person, ignorant and uneducated, but sincere. When you can't pay your bills for whatever reason you just can't pay your bill's. When a creditor takes an accounting loss they benefit and when they sell it to collection agencies for pennies on the dollar they benefit too. This is called depreciating an asset. When the collection agency collects they make a huge profit. That's why you make a great income. I didn't borrow money from the collection company or you. I will not pay either of you! Why didn't the creditor offer to settle the account out with me for what a collection company pays for it? Regardless of how sincere you seem, you are only about your own income and selfish greed please get off your moral high horse. The system in America is about "Risk and Reward" - most people try to pay, but you have to take losses to make the most profit. It's about efficient recovery from losses that keeps an economy strong and allows people to get back to work again quickly and stir the economy again. Your point of view creates a stagnant quagmire in the economy. If you want to be a moral compass, buy a book first.
- peter replies to Cpupyou are so smart...SMRT
- Marv replies to DOUHAVEMORALSI think the funny part is how bill collectors always brag about how much money they earn, yet every bill collector I've ever known always wears a cheap suit and drives a rusted Geo Metro. Whatever.
Oh, and how does getting laid affect someone's ability to pay their bills? "Whoops! I was going to write that check today but she just wouldn't let me out of bed!" LOL! - no name replies to MISSYBut you are not always calling the person that owes the debt. You just call random numbers that may or may not have the same last name. Scum bags!
- m replies to CpupYou guys always say what a legitimate company you work for, and how the person on your list is wrong to not call back. Not even once have I seen an explanation for why you chase old, legally noncollectable debt. Things that fall outside the statute of limitations for the state in question, for which no judgment can be filed. The so called 'zombie' debt that may or may not have been paid before, or may not even have been correct to begin with. And in every case, a debt that has been charged off by the original creditor. When a person claiming to be from a reputable collection company can explain that, I will listen them. Until then you all are just wasting time you could spend closing accounts on the unsuspecting.
- Not the guy they are looking for| 1 replyI too received a call from 866-909-0529. Apparently a recorded message from a 'Misty Ramp' asking me to call back ext. 57048.
I suspect they got the number from cell phone records or possibly land line records. I know the person they asked for but there is no reason anyone who knows her would expect to reach her at the number they dialed.
The lady they asked for is the mother of my ex-son-in-law. The number they called is the estate of my mother who died in OCT 2007. Mrs. 'X' has never lived there, never lived in the same state and I don't think has ever visited the house. The only connection I can see is perhaps a long time ago I or my daughter called her from that number or she called it and someone has access to the phone records.
It is unrelated to this particular number but I had another instance a few weeks ago of apparently the same tactic. I received a call on my home phone asking for my ex-wife by her current name. We have been divorced for over 20 years and I bought this house (and got the phone number) only about 5 years ago. My ex has never lived here, is not even in the same area. So again, the only logical explanation is they are scraping phone records. I am in contact with my ex so that is possible.
Another uglier thought is they may be scraping online records like Myspace. They could see I am a friend of hers and my number is listed. If you stretch it a bit farther it could be the same for the first scenario. I am a MySpace friend of my son-in-law's mom. The estate phone number USED to be my number many years ago and in a few odd databases I have seen that number tied to me. My mom was never on social networking sites so it would have to be a two step process to get her phone number for the other lady's name.
Regardless of how they are getting the numbers shame on the company(ies) for hassling other people just so they can make a buck. Whether the debt is legitimate or not it is not MY debt and I certainly have not place (or power) to make those other people pay it.
Given the sneaky tactics and lies collectors use I have not desire to help them. Some of the posts to this forum by collectors are pretty self righteous. For the record I do not have ANY delinquent debt and pay off my CC every month. I don't say that to brag, what I mean is my complaints are not 'sour grapes'. The previous owners of the house lost it to bank foreclosure and had many debts. I've had collectors call my number and lie saying the (previous owner name) gave them this number to reach him at. I've never met the previous owner and they don't know my number. It was obvious the debt collector was just going by reverse look up and the physical address and 'fishing'. I don't like being lied to.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery Associates

Bud Says Consumer Comments Below
Portfolio Recovery Associates, (PRA) bottom feeders with deep pockets, have apparently figured out how to get blood from a turnip. They collect on accounts dating back to the 90’s -- accounts so out of statute that most consumers can’t even remember if they even existed.
These vultures live off the grief and (in some cases) the time barred debts of unsophisticated consumers. Like most of the bottom feeders out there, PRA and Anchor are fighting the density of junk debt buyers who have flooded the market. To say the price for accounts has gone up is an under-statement. PRA is paying more just like everyone else to stay on top of the market.
One of PRA's favorite tricks is to use the IRS to collect for them. They issue the debtor a 1099C for the amount of the debt, then charge the full amount off as a loss. We've heard cases of other agencies collecting later on the same debt. Could PRA be charging off the full amount, then selling the account to another junk debt buyer? The poor consumer gets screwed in more ways than one. First, he's paid a questionable debt via a settlement to PRA - perhaps 60% on a debt they most likely couldn't have proven in court. Secondly, his taxes are hit when the IRS waves this 1099C in his face. They are effectively collecting for PRA at this point, since PRA took the loss (100%) of something they paid only pennies on the dollar for. Third, the consumer has to face the debt again when the junk debt buyer comes after him anew. Hopefully, the IRS will catch onto this scam. PRA is a publicly traded company, so one would think they wouldn't be able to get away with this type of financial accounting for very long without some preying eyes.
CAUTION: I recommend you NEVER disclose your bank account or credit card information to a debt collector, as you risk them emptying your account, or maxing out your credit card. If you feel they are reporting on your credit bureau files in error or need assistance in dealing with them, email the details w/your location. Assistance and referral to a consumer legal specialist may be available. - collectors-r-criminals replies to DOUHAVEMORALSJUST PAY DONT JUDGE COLLECTOR'S ERRORS
Collections -- last vocational refuge for the illiterate! - concerned daughter| 1 replyMy father is 87 years old. He gets very anxious with this type of calls, which are NOT for him, but for any other random member of the family, usually someone who DOES NOT live in the same city. Sometimes we come to visit him, and happen to answer some of these calls, like today. The man who called, I have to say, sounded polite and professional. He identified himself by first name, but did not give a company name, and gave a different number (1-866-909-0529 x 57144) than the one shown on the caller ID. Sure enough, the person he was calling for was NOT my father, but another member of the family, who DOES NOT live in the same city. I do not know how these agencies get the numbers of innocent -elderly- parents, whether the reason for the call -collection or sale- is legit or not. My father does NOT need this! He has a heart condition, and HE is the one being mortified and harassed. Please, help us stop this third-party calling!

- HF- replies to DOUHAVEMORALSWe don't all read "YOUR BIBLE" [***] but yes that's a legitimate response you have and are correct in what you say. Those of "US" do have and should be held accountable for not paying what we borrowed but, the fact remains almost NONE of the said companies will CALL about debt collection rather they send a regular old envelope that usually doesn't say anything other then Call this blah blah 1-800 number you owe us this much. Also I do not have credit problems. I know what I can and can NOT spend but a family member has been harassed for almost 9 years now about a medical bill that WAS covered by insurance I was there when he was admitted and also when we were told is was covered and yes most of the [***] you get are false claims or the fact that the guy that gets paid $7/hour FAILED to file the insurance claim correct. So swallow a tablespoon of salt every time you call someone cause it might not always be correct information that you have received.

- D| 2 repliesThis is a legitimate debt collection agency. They are called Portfolio Recovery Associates. Here is their website: http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/. They called me, and it turned out someone with the same name as me (verified by Social Security number - I didn't give mine, they read the last four of the one they had and I told them it wasn't mine) racked up some debt and they were calling about it. They were very pleasant to deal with, and removed my number from their contact list for this person. I can't speak for any of the complaints on this site; I'm just relating my story with this phone number.
